Is Aria the only example? I don't really remember Aliens cursing that much. I agree though they should use there own curse words. Human curse words for human characters. Another thing too was Aliens using old time Human sayings. I love how they always followed it up with, "isn't that how the saying goes Shepard?" Too bad Shep couldn't reply with something like, "just a sec I need to get my ancestors up on vid com to find out."

There is not much swearing overall, but I'm pretty sure a few aliens swear with relatively mild profanity throughout the series. But its been a few years since i played through so i really don;t remember.  That one stands out as I thought it was a god awful line.

I think it's completely unnecessary.

I always took Bosh'tet to be a Quarian swear word.

I wouldn't mind similar swear words being used for Asari or Turians and such, or even some humans. It might make some sense for human passengers on the ark to have picked up some alien swear words from their fellow passengers. The lack of an English translation can always be explained away as the universal translators not having an exact translation, or having a setting where some commonly understood words are left untranslated to add color to a conversation. That's my head canon anyway for why Vega's huevos rancheros didn't come out as rancher's eggs.

The universal translator makes no sense to begin with, I don't think you need to make up reasons why it works one way here or another there, just roll with it.

It seems crazy to me that people seem to have more of an issue with language use than violence or other mature themes. I suppose that's a natural disconnect between real life and fiction but still.

Biotics and element zero don't make sense either, but people accept them because they're part of the game's lore. It can be hard to maintan a willing suspension of disbelief at times however when the game's internal logic/lore fails to stay consistent. Bosh'tet or huevos rancheros not being translated doesn't bother me personally (the power of head canon!), but I've seen some other people gripe about it. I can understand why they gripe about it even if it didn't annihilate my suspension of disbelief while playing.

On that note I wouldn't mind a codex entry on universal translators that went into more detail in Andromeda, if people were dropping the occasional alien word or phrase in English dialogue.

No, I mean they don't make sense in that they don't have any rules. Bioitics and eezo are supposed to work a certain way, and the setitng is shaped by that. Translators are just a hand wave for why everyone speaks Hollywood English. Nothing arises from how translators work, and the way translators work is never explained.

They might as well not exist and everyone is speaking mostly English, because that's how everything behaves.

To be fair, I recognize the same people arguing against profanity as the ones that wanted to remove nudity and violence in that other thread, so they are nothing if not consistent.

But one does not simply remove violence, especially from a game like Mass Effect.

Or a better example that is also ME related. I just couldn't bring myself to murder innocent Batarians.

OH. My bad. I guess the people of the Milky Way won't be building a monument for my Shep any time soon.

Then they have a serious problem with their expectations.

Mass effect has a certain identity, this identity includes certain amounts of violence nudity and profanity.

Mass effect is not a story about a group of priests and nuns discussing the weather.

Was not aware that a mature title required immature language to discuss various interests.

We're all pretty consistent, really, including those of us arguing in favor of explicit content. Not for nothing, but this thread went pretty much exactly how I expected it would, right down to the key players.

You're right, it sure is similar to other threads I've seen about, even the posts read the same!

When used wisely, it's one of the most valuable methods of characterization through dialogue there is.

That said, I think they should make the paraphrase as clear as possible when and if there's an option for the protagonist to swear.

Actually Dragon Age Inquisition Trespasser did this beautifully with the speech option - This beeping thing - insert the f word etc. Loved that option though, because it added to the frustration of the character and made it all that more powerful. When used right it can be just that.

That depends on how one defines certain language as immature in the first place. In this case, is strong language always defined as immature? If so, why?
