Nor discuss what is to be considered great works. Guess one man's treasure is another man's trash....

1) you probably shouldn't call any work of art in any medium "trash" if you aren't willing to subjectively experience that art yourself, since - as you correctly point out, taste is...

2) ...subjective. And, since you are willing to wax philosophical on what contributes to the experience of an individuals like/dislike in a given work of art - would you not agree that if that work accurately reflects the culture (including the language) of the people it is representing, that many would find this to be favorable? Since you haven't seen it, you wont appreciate this example, but wishing for the Departed to be without profanity is like wishing for Saving Private Ryan to be without blood. It's just...an inaccurate representation of life.

And art, as the saying goes, imitates life.

So, by your own accounts, can you not see where the majority of people in this thread are coming from here? Wishing to avoid a given movie or game or song due to profanity is perfectly fine, but wishing to impose that restriction on others is not.

Not everyone agrees with your restricted view of things, as most here would be of the opinion that a world without colorful language is...well, colorless and drab.

Well said.

As I said before, a toggle similar to Gore in many games would be a good medium. Give people the option. It would however require multiple voice overs/dialogue which could get tedious to produce I imagine.

That depends on how one defines certain language as immature in the first place. In this case, is strong language always defined as immature? If so, why?

Context should help, but would say that generally such language is unrequired and unnecessary.

what do you know

sorry for your impoverished vocabulary, non-swearers

Can live w/o profanity being an active part of my vocabulary. Wish the same could be said of most social media....

Guess we know where you stand.

Simply put. I disagree with you trying to tell me what I can and cannot say.

In fact, let's flip it around.

...stop saying that. I find it offensive.

Think of it this way: some words are more efficient at conveying a certain feeling than others. If there's someone that I have a great deal of contempt for, I wouldn't waste time explaining the depths of my contempt or use softer words like jerk when I can simply and succinctly declare that this person is an a**hole. If I get splashed by a car passing through a muddy puddle on the way to work, there is no word that expresses my dislike of the universe at that point in time than a swear.

I don't really watch anime, so this tells me nothing.

And I thought that you disliked characters with a disturbing "dark side", no? This one seems like he has some serious dark side going on.

(if I can judge by the over-the-top cartoon villain animation)

He actually doesn't. While he does oppose the 'protagonist', the 'protagonist' is actually the one with a dark side. And I never said I dislike them. I said I dislike that trait about them, same as if they use profanity.

Not all is trash (eg; would be more interested in TW3 if there was less explicit content and a Pause function), but much of it is certainly not worth my time or funds. Do not have to watch a film or play a game with content I know that I dislike to sorta figure that I will not enjoy the overall experience. Opinions do differ.

Have no interest in watching The Departed and most Gangster films. And simply because one is a gangster, in the military, etc does not equate to them having to use profanity. It may be more likely due to the environment and norms, but there are always exceptions.

As others have mentioned, if profanity were removed, it is curious if many would miss it. And I do not recall demanding that art should be presented in the way I prefer. This is a false premise.

My opinion is that I prefer it to be gone, and tend to avoid those titles where it is prevalent and excessive. DAI and ME3 both have language I dislike, but it can be fairly well avoided by not using certain NPC's. This does not seem to be the case in TW3 where so many random NPC's use profanity.

The entire cast in The Departed are mass murderers and cops that live in Boston. Harsh language is second nature. There is no separating them unless you filter them through a Saturday morning cartoon show.

I agree. While I don't like it and disagree with the defenses for it, I don't want those who like it to be deprived of it. All I want is two things:

1) Be able to play my character in a way that they don't use profanity or swear.

2) To have enough companions who do not use such vocabulary to make a team.

In comparison to most of the other characters in that series, not really. He kills people yes, but those people are literal monsters and/or those who threaten his church. He even goes against his superior when said superior goes too far and kills civilians. So he has as much a dark side as any soldier in any military in history. Or as much as the good companions in Bioware games.

But this is offtopic. As I said, I just posted him since other were posting awesome clergy gifs.

What really does it for me is when i stub a toe. You are never prepared for it and it hurts so freaking much. I would like to see the reactions of a few members in here when things like this occur. Almost everyone i know would react with swearing.

Most of people you knew are probally dead, including friends, family and loved ones. You'll probally never see your home again - hell, you don't even know if there's still something left. Then you'll have to fight for your surival in an alien galaxy risking your life on a daily basis for god knows what reason.

Yeah, I'd say "****" once in a while.

I employ incoherent sound. It's just really, really loud.

Swearing is for casual conversation.

Or perhaps an education in a religious school. Or having a parent still in their care. Or having children that were not to be involved in the business. Or etc.

Always exceptions.

And I would hopefully not give in to harsh language. What you choose to do has no affect on my RP, and most likely the reverse is also true.

I was educated in a religious school. Those Catholic school kids loved to swear.

And do drugs.

Also Catholic school. We had the police around once looking for the gangs who were selling drugs. Quite a few of the girls dropped out at 15/16 due to being pregnant. I remember when the drama studio was burned down by an arson attack from a student. Oh and the headmaster being done for fraud. Then there was the chronic bullying issue where a fun game for some kids was seeing how hard they could throw stones at other kids head. One guyI knew nearly lost an eye. Oh and the hilarious regular organised mass fights with the other local school ending up in quite a few serious injuries. Pretty sure the priests were on the fiddle too. Literally.

Of course no-one ever swore cos you know it was a terrible thing to do, god forbid they see it in a computer game.

Moral of the Tale: Glad I ain't you. Am also not Catholic, though I do believe in a single 'Universal' church.

As for swearing, still against it in entertainment, as there are other better alternatives.
