After much misery, finally got DA 2 running. Unlike Origins where you are 100% free to make your Warden look however you want, Hawke comes with a specific suggested look including the warpaint or blood smear across the face. What's the story behind this? Why the warpaint/blood smear? The Emo-looking hair? Is Hawke supposed to be a typical Fereldan? Or does he/she belong to some tribal group? The Chasind?
Hawke's background?

The blood smear is just there to look cool , or stupid depending on your point of view.
Hawke is not part of any tribal group , he's from Lothering (DAO) so typical Fereldan yes.

It's something that suits Reavers and Blood Mages

Actually, nothing specific I guess....tho Hawke must be a human,no way to change his(her) race. But you can still modify the face and hair into whatever look you want...you can make a female Hawke looks like Malibu Barbie if you want,it's completely up to you.....

One Race; Human. Mutiply classes. No, Hawke doesn't, though I'd love if Hawke was; Hawke is related to Amell (the Human Mage of DAO, If you so happen to play one of course.) And I don't know why Canon Hawke wears war paint; my Hawke doesn't....

I was introduced to Dragon Age via Inquisition and always wondered what the warpaint and Emo hair was all about. I was surprised going through Lothering that no explanation was given. I assumed what I saw in Inquisition was Canon and what one would see if Hawke ended up in any of the comics. If you do customize Hawke, male or female, would your Hawke make it to Inquisition? Or would you get one of the default Hawkes?

Hawke come from Japan, was a lead singer of J-Rock band....she fell off on the stage because of jumping too much and her nose hit the speaker...that's how she got the scar, the producer don't want her to sing anymore...and so she moved to Lothering to start a new life...
But she still love jumping too much and doing jeet kune do karate stuff....and she learned all those stuff from her cousin Bruce Lee...at at their hair, same isn't it?

You can customize Hawke in Inquisition, too.
Though... I'm fond of the default version.

Yes, I know Hawke is fully customizable. I just wanted to know what was behind the lore/default appearance. I figured the blood smear had to mean something. Hawke's mother and siblings all look normal.

Even Hawke jokes about the blood in Legacy with Varric. It's apparently one of Varric's embellishments, to make Hawke look more extreme. Just like Bethany's big breasts.
I like the default designs (female moreso), but I don't use the blood. They didn't put her exact hair in DAI though.. the best you can do is use male Hawke's hair.

And: Hawke officially a blood mage (Legacy):
Hawke: [...] And really? More blood? Why can’t it ever be spit…or a lock of hair?
Varric: You really want to encounter a spit mage?
Hawke: For variety sure.

Hawke a blood mage? The blood smear would make sense in that context. OTOH, in Inquisition, the default Hawke you work with preaches that blood magic is never worth the cost.

1. It was joke. (Yes, it is – have smile at end...)
2. It was serious. (Why not?)
If he know the nature of the blood magic, he know: this is dangerous.
– After all, what would say?
– On the other hand: all self-conceited men (mage) know it: he capable this way, the others may be weak. ![]()
– Magic is magic.
And – here the real evidence:

So blood magic is an option your Hawke can accept or reject? It's a RPG and you should have "bad" options available.

Yes. DAI's Hawke cameo is grumpy towards blood magic, but in DA2 you can be a blood mage or be supportive of its use in general.

Yeah, my Hawke was a hypocrite that way. He wasn't a blood mage, but he regularly sent apostates to the Circle if he thought they were too reckless... despite being friends with a blood mage and an abomination... >____>

My blood mage Hawke just realized: he is clever and strong, all anothers are stupid and weak (as Fenris declare too... his mistake, not Hawke's at all... Fenris was very convincing...
)
This it was his reason that he did not help Merrill to restore the Eluvian. Hypocrisy? ![]()

I don't think it was implemented well. So I don't play it. It exists on a mechanic level, but not very good on a story level. I'll leave it up to the next game (if Tevinter) to see if they get it right.
Although to be fair, there isn't much context to any of the specs.

True, but considering blood magic is heavily frowned upon, there SHOULD have been some context to that spec at least.

I agree. I say the same thing for Reaver though. Both of these require more reaction. If it aims to be a story/RPG, I mean.
I suppose it doesn't matter though if Bioware just wants a "gamey" thing. Not sure where they stand on that anymore.

Well, the impression I get from Origins/Awakening is that Reavers are pretty much nonexistent outside Haven (at least as far as Ferelden culture is concerned) so they're 1) virtually unknown and 2) it's not completely clear to outsiders where the Reaver abilities come from. True, there is the Reaver manual in Awakening which suggests demonic involvement, but (IIRC) Kolgrim doesn't say anything about where Reaver abilities come from in Origins. (Then again, I have yet to accept his offer, so maybe he does say something about it if you do.)

Well, he talks about power in blood. It's the same realm of magic at least. But at this point, I don't even know if they have "schools" of magic anymore. It's all random gamey stuff. Rule of cool or something. Although it doesn't actually seem that cool. lol
But Reavers exist elsewhere. There was that Nevarran woman in Tallis/Felicia Day's movie. She literally turned into some monstrous freak because of it. And DA2 also had quite a few Reaver bandits like her. Also some of the Nevarran dragon hunters (some of Cassandra's family she isn't too proud of). Sten also is weary of it in the comics, when explaining Calenhad's legacy to Alistair. So the Qunari have known it's dragon blood roots too.
