The specs have always been weird. Reavers who do or do not need to drink dragon blood, Templars with or without lyrium, Spirit Healers who are or are not possessed... plenty of specializations have never made any sense. It kinda sucks.
That's true as far as the Templar and Reaver specs go. However, I don't recall that it was ever implied anywhere that Spirit Healers have to be possessed, just that they have a particularly strong connection to the Fade.

Eh, I think it's 'cause both our healers have been possessed and the spec is described as "channeling" a spirit. Or a spirit's energy. It's just ambiguously worded and seems confusing.
To me, anyway. Maybe I'm just dense.

I'll have to check what it says, but you're right, that does sound rather ambiguous. OTOH, possessed =/= abomination, and Wynne's case seems to show that there are varying degrees of possession.

I would think Wynne might just be possessed too. It never outright says it.. but she talks about being a different kind of moody person once and then changing one day.. awakening to this new realization around the time she was talking to a reverend mother. It could be the spirit of faith that did that.
She also relies on children's tales and platitudes. Something I'd expect from a spirit who gets their notions from dreams. They boil things down to the symbolic.
But perhaps it isn't quite the same as an abomination per se. Even Anders retained some part of himself, even though he considered he and Justice as "one". I don't think Anders did what he did simply because he was an abomination or more destructive than usual. I think he did it because Justice is an idiot (just like Faith is) and simply acts like a spirit. Justice expects instant results and relies on simplistic notions of right and wrong. True justice in the real world requires a process (as does everything), but he just wants to reach an end goal. So he bombs everything. Even without Anders, he already thought Ser Pounce a Lot was a "slave" and just insisted Nathaniel was a "thief". He doesn't care about details.
I think the main benefit Wynne had is Faith isn't concerned with the same things. So it's more harmless. But they're equally simple minded.
My 2c.

When Wynne asks if she's an abomination, you can say, "If one retains one's humanity, one is not an abomination." But I think it's also valid to designate anyone who's possessed an abomination without meaning it in a disparaging way? I mean, a spirit affects its host (and vice versa) regardless of whether it's "corrupt"... so I don't know if there's realistically a difference there, other than a cultural one (see: the Avvar, the ancient elves, Chantry folks...).

The blood smear is just there to look cool , or stupid depending on your point of view.
Hawke is not part of any tribal group , he's from Lothering (DAO) so typical Fereldan yes.
ALl the backstory you need about it...

I think it's just semantics, honestly. Perspective.

It's bad enough that I wouldn't wish something like that on anyone. That's all I know.
That and "spirits" are stupid. Reality is about process, about how you get from point A to B, and about creativity. Not about wishing things into being. Anyone who has lost this isn't exactly human. If the Chantry teachings are true, then it's no wonder the Maker rejected them. I'd like to think someone called the "Maker" actually appreciates how things are actually made. ![]()
