Hey, ive been trying for the longest time to think of what class and spec i would like to try to solo the game(starting with easy and working to harder dificulties). i read somewhere else that you can solo effectively as a sword and shield reever. i was also contemplating doing a solo run as a templar or either a necromancer or KE. i was hoping this community could shed some light on my delema. take heed that i am not looking to have builds for dragons but general combat. i am not excommunicating the thought of a rogue but i just imagine that the constant kiting and hit and run tactics would wear on my sanity. thank you.

A solo rogue might find some trouble before Skyhold.

But once you get the Enchanced Amulet of Barrier from Fiona, either a Artificer or a Tempest can solo NM without kiting.

2h Champion is also a good choice.

You never die. And you can deal a lot of damage with the new Combat Roll upgrade.

so would that include duel wield. because i know tempest can virtually stop time. also i did see a video were a 2h champion solo fought a rift. oddly he was spamming the first attack animation. how would you do that.

You can solo nightmare with any spec, but if you are looking for easy, Archer is probably the easiest. Here's my ranking, from easiest to hardest, with the big fat disclaimer that I haven't run a full game solo, only portions, like dragon battles and the Haven raid. YMMV.

Archer (any specialization)

Rift Mage

KE

Champion

DW Rogue (any specialization)

Templar

Necromancer

Reaver

For Warriors, S&S has slightly more survivability in the early game over 2H, but after Skyhold it all evens out.

Here's a video of a solo Level 5 Archer against the Envy Demon on Nightmare with no armor and no healing potions! If that isn't proof enough how effective Archer is solo, I don't know what is:

Solo without trials archer can manage, solo with trials you need a mage to dispel enemy barriers, plus you can equip ring of doubt and no one can see you… so mage is the ultimate class for soloing the game, I hate mages.

mmm...are you talking about this:

or this:

Basically you can use search button to cancel the attack animation, it's how it works.

By the way, those 2 videos are made in the previous patch, in the latest version the guard generation of TTD is not that great anymore, also Walking Fortress doesn't reduce CD when getting hit. But in the other hand, now, max guard  is way more, armor rating passive works correctly, HOV can be used to compensate the guard generation, also new schematics and gears can let you have a very high critical chance/critical damage/attack etc, so 2h champion is still very good. you can see this here as an example: https://youtu.be/HTNwTC-xX6s

I didn't use search button trick in this video on purpose, but you get the idea.

This is my try and tested method on nightmare, early game you gotta avoid though fights until you get flaming array, afterwards you just bait enemies into them and gets the hell out of dodge.

It's important you keep an Ice or Lightining Staff early on to deal with enemies immune to fire since you won't be getting another kind of spell until you are level 7~8.

I recommend getting or crafting itens which do bonus damage to barriers since it can be a pain in the arse to kill rage demons once they start appearing around levels 7~10 and you still haven't got your Spirit Blade.

Once you are level 10, meaning you can unlock your specialization, go for Knight Enchanter and do moderate combat until you reach level 15.

You should be able to get the Ring of Doubt by now, you'll also realize it's becoming very hard for enemies to bring you down unless you get too reckless.

Once you reach level 17 and get the Fade Cloak upgrade you are done for the rest of the game, Fade Cloak allows you to cleanse your character from damage over time spells and, more importantly, lets you flip the bird on One-Hit K.O. attacks while also dealing massive damage to keep your barrier high.

By using Fade Step to close in on archers and deploying a minefield to their face you'll quickly eliminate the only kind of character that can potentially take down your barrier and by constantly using the combo Fade Cloak>Energy Barrage>Spirit Blade with the occasional mine in-between you'll render melee completely useless.

You'll only need to cast a barrier at the start of combat as your carnage will keep it up constantly and if you somehow goof up and lose it you can just Fade Step to safety and cast it again, you can even fill it up partially by tearing through some enemies thanks to the Frost Step upgrade.

Nothing on the main game or even DLC will slow you down with a few exceptions that must be given attention:

-Giants's boulders can potentially kill you in a single shot and they have a nasty homing feature which forces you to wait until after the boulder is thrown before dodging it with Fade Step, once you have Fade Cloak this becomes less of an issue.

-Hakkonites are cheaters, every class of them have some skill that can potentially ruin your day if you don't pay attention:

.Warriors use Payback Strike which eats a huge chunk of your barrier and instantly kills you if they get past it.

.Bruisers can spam AoE staggering and knock down attacks which compromise your ability to fight back and generate Barrier, they can also use Block and Slash to screw you up like the warriors.

.Assassins are basically your dual-bladed Inquisitor turned into an enemy NPC, they use the same stealth tatics to kill a dragon under 30 seconds on you, even at full barrier you'll barely last a few seconds against them. Fortunately, you can fall back to the basics of staying on top of a Fire Mine, let them blow themselves up and then Fade Step far away enough to cooldown and repeat.

.Archers also stole from the Inquisitor's playbook but they are worse because they spam Long Shot which can knock down huge chunks of barrier and insta-kill you if they get past it, my advice is to spam Fade Step>Fire Mine to their faces followed by Fade Cloak>Energy Barrage>Spirit Blade so that they die before getting the chance of turning you into a pincushion.

.Spellbinders can't do much damage to mage characters with loads of Willpower but beware when they cast Ice Mine under your feet as it can seriously hurt you.

.Whenever facing a group of Hakkonites go first for the Archers, second for Assasins, third for Spellbinders, fourth for Warriors and last for Bruisers. This will lower the chances of someone getting you through a blind spot.

-SHA-BRYTOL BOLTERS! Giving machineguns to characters in a medieval setting is pure dickery from the developers, they can kill you in a single salvo and have very short cooldown times. This is the worst enemy in the entire game and must be killed on sight with everything you have, above all you must remember to time Fade Cloak to dodge their salvos and kill them in CQC.

-Arcane Horrors are also bad, same tactics as the Sha-Brytol but at least their cooldown is longer and you are more resistant to magic.

Hmm for a Solo build, a lot of people will usually say Knight enchanter because of the damage to barrier perk but after the patch I really don't find it as great (Don't get me wrong, if you done it right you'll be pretty damn immortal) but for my own personal taste is an assassin archer because of the rogue abilities for armor penetration and what not Including major critical stacks/Dmg I really enjoyed the Archer assassin because even though I was able to dish out high crits, I was able to be out of their range and if they close the distant just pop up stealth and do it over. (This is for my own taste though, their's much more solo builds but for the ones I tested, Archer assassin stick to me)
