My Wardens are usually single, twenty-something Cousland males, so Morrigan and Leliana are in.

Dog: Absolutely

Alistair:  Yes, he's a dork but is loyal to a fault (unless you spare Loghain).

Sten:  No, he's an unbalanced psycho. Alistair made rabbit stew and I can't find my favorite spoon, everyone must die!

Oghren:  Yes, he's exactly the type of nutjob bastard it takes to defeat a blight.

Shale:  Yes, similar to Oghren comments (only he's a she).

Winn:  Probably no, 50/50, kind of liked her, she'd be in if she could keep the sermons to herself.

Zevran:  No... I always found that "I failed to kill you so everyone who hired me is now pissed at me so I totally won't try to kill you again" speech lame.

Loghain:  No... unless its Zombie Loghain

Fun DAA Anders:  Yes, he was cool

Morbid DA2 Anders:  No. There's enough that sucks in this world, I don't need this depressing goth abomination making it worse.

Nathaniel:  Yes, liked the character, and love the Warden's possible response when recruiting him:  "Some of my best friends have wanted to kill me."

Velanna: No. Just No. She's annoyed by everything and screams at just about anything.

Sigrun:  Yes, thought she was a cool character.

Eh... Guys, are you not too choosy? If you are up to you, the Dragons would eat the world! ;)

That would be why I haven't made a Wardensona.  (Among other things, I'm a nonviolent pacifist type IRL.  If I were to play the game that way, I wouldn't even make it out of my origin.)

OP asked for a real life scenario.  In game, I've recruited all of them.  And with the exception of 2 I love them all, great characters.  Even one of the ones I dislike is still a well written character.  But OP asked if we knew them as real life characters, not characters in a video game.  Most of them I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw them and one of them I wouldn't urinate on to put him out if he was on fire.  It's one thing to know it's a video game and they can be trusted, it's another to not have a script on hand to reference each NPC as they are introduced.  Besides, I'm a pretty introverted person with some major trust issues in RL.

I am not a Cousland or a Surana.  I can't swing a sword (effectively anyway) or shoot lightning bolts from my fingertips.  Technically Duncan would have taken one look at me, saw the most effective thing I'd do if I saw a darkspawn is soil myself and pass out and just shook his head.

There are no dragons in real life to eat the world, so I can afford to be choosy. :P

„OP asked for a real life scenario.”

No. OP asked: what wold you do, if you wold be a real Hero, in a real Ferelden. Then: not in THIS world. I think, In this world, you sit at a table and asking biography, certificates and recommendations, for heroic 48-hour weekly paperwork. And yes, you would be choosy. :)

Ok. In real world?

Dog. Only. If not too stinky, and not for work.

PS: Just look: the paramilitary or mercenary armies' recruiters not anymore so choosy in the real life.

Nah, the game's soloable :P

I'd see Sten in his cage, ask what he did to deserve it and promptly keep walking.

Zevran wouldn't survive his ambush

Loghain certainly wouldn't be recruited

Shale I'm on the fence. I'd probably take her along though.

Oghren/morrigan/leliana each would have a few doubts, but not enough to reject the help. For being a violent drunk, Machiavellian ******, and crazy talks-to-god respectively.

Alistair, the dog and Wynne I'm sure I'd keep along.

Not picky at all the game can be won with you recruiting not a single person.

Just my PC, Loghain/Alistair and Dog. We can save the world just fine.

I recruited all the companions because it was in-character for my Warden to do so. He was a lowlife duster before Duncan recruited him. He got a second chance, and thought it was only fair to give other people their shot at a second chance as well.

Realistically I would not be a Grey Warden because if I saw a darkspawn I would **** myself and die.

Lmao

I love that.  As much as I'd like to think I'd be brave and save the world....yeah I'd probably just do that instead.

Your Cousland's should hang with mine; Brendan would be flirting constantly with Morrigan though... I think my Cousland wants her to have another baby in there future... Angelica would be either teasing Morrigan playfully or she'd go hunt bears with Aveline and Cassandra. Cause lol

vbibbi - try this: http://www.nexusmods...age/mods/4394/?

Personally, I'd probably only recruit Al, Wynne, Leliana and Dog.  An assassin who flirts with me after trying to kill me, a confessed murderer, a creepy power-hungry witch whose mother is even weirder,  an animated statue who killed its previous owner, a drunk, and a possibly insane war criminal?  Yeahno.

If we're talking Awakening, I'd probably end up with just Anders and Sighrun, and maybe (MAYBE) Nathaniel.  Velanna's a little too vengeful, Oghren's a drunk, and Justice... yeahno.

Awesome thanks. I had the PS3 version so can't use mods, unfortunately, but I'll still take a look out of interest!

For those against Morrigan, while I get the trust issues, I think I would take her with me as she is a mage, which is helpful when alone and on the run from the world, and I would assume she has some tricks up her sleeve with forgotten knowledge that could help against the darkspawn. The benefits to bringing her outweigh my concerns, especially as at time of recruitment, she hasn't shown her idiotic ruthless tendencies yet, just snark and rudeness.

I've had enough TPKs that I would not be sanguine about assuming that I don't need any help.

So, assuming I survived the Joining and everything progressed as it did in Origins up through Ostagar...

Alistair is the only guy left that I actually know. He seems pretty loyal to his brothers and sisters, and he's the only one who understands me as a new Grey Warden. He hasn't led me astray yet, so I'd probably trust him. -- IN THE PARTY

Morrigan's mother saved my life and is a scary legendary witch, who I don't really want to argue with. Morrigan herself seems like she could be useful (since I wouldn't be a mage), assuming she doesn't kill me. But then, if she wanted to kill me, she probably would've tried already, or at least threatened to... -- IN THE PARTY

Leliana seems kinda crazy and way too cheerful. And neither of my "friends" seem to want her around. Granted, if she was really that committed, she'd probably follow me anyway. What am I supposed to do, kill her? -- (RELUCTANTLY) IN THE PARTY

Sten murdered an entire family. Okay, moving on... -- OUT

Wynne seems like a harmless old lady mage who genuinely wants to help. Sure, why not? And then I'd regret it pretty quickly when she tries to interfere with my social life and treat me like an ignorant child. Sigh... -- IN THE PARTY (FOR NOW)

Oghren is a creepy drunk who probably hit on me at some point while we were in the Deep Roads looking for his wife... Assuming I haven't clubbed him over the head for being a doofus, distract him with something mundane at the first surface merchant we find, then run away as fast as possible. -- OUT

Zevran tried to kill me. And is a creepy misogynist. Why are we still here? -- OUT

Shale... *approaches Shale with control rod, looks between Shale and my squishy self, thinking about how she brutally murdered Wilhelm*... Nope. -- OUT

This is all assuming I'm just recruiting them as followers or fellow adventurers, or whatever. Looking at them as recruits for an army obviously changes things and would probably make me recruit all of them.

Zevran; he tried to kill me.

Sten; he went berserk and killed an entire family, so I deem him unstable.

For DAA I would only choose Velanna, as she is just too consumed by her anger, and thus unstable.

I think that's it, really.

Sure, with all of these the person can improve over time as you get to know them, but we're only talking about the initial recruitment decision before any of that occurs.

And hey, she doesn't ask you to be her new master. That should make your odds better than Wilhelm's.

Indeed she dosen't she chooses to work with you because she recognises you need the help

True. Wrong word choice on my part. I was probably looking for "womanizer" and got distracted by something shiny.

Sten, too unstable...if I do free Sten from that cage I'll put his a** into Anger Management Class for a year, before he could join me. While Oghren will be in AA, coz I just can't stand drunks.

* I'd be a Human Mage. Spirt Healer Styled!

I can't see any reason to recruit Sten, Zevran or Loghain. Not caring about morality whilst fighting the Blight is one thing, but I have nothing to suggest these people wouldn't murder me once my back is turned. I haven't played Awakening, so can't comment on those guys.

I never understood that the complaint is against Zevran. He's an assassin. He did not want to kill the warden, but it was his task. Nothing personal.

He failed to finish his work. The fact ensures the future loyalty to warden. I think.

The Grey Wardens do not need immaculate virgin girls.

I see no reason why his masters would think he failed if he poisoned you the night after you set him free. How would that be failing?

It does not have to trust him, but also to pay attention to him. Once the warden managed to ... why not succeed to control it?

The dog may bite your ass, and Wynne could even be an abomination. Leliana is a bard... You no one can trust... Maybe better alone.

This isn't a choice. It's kill him or set him free and hope he doesn't stab you in the back when you're occupied in the next fight, when he has no reason not to.

I do not see that he is a greater danger to anyone else unknowns (and all of recruits are unknow to the warden). As I said: from this point of view better alone.

He's a bigger danger because he has every reason to kill you. Why couldn't he just kill you in the next battle when your back is turned? Then he hasn't failed his assassination mission, he was just getting close to you to deal the final blow.

If you romanced or your friendship with Zevran is high enough, you'll learn that he doesn't really want to be in the Crows anymore, and he wanted to die in the Warden mission...it was a suicide mission for him...and much later, you can help him finish those Crows assassins went after him,and free him from their claws. The Warden is like the first real friend (lover) he ever had, since he had no choice but to be an assassin/slave for the Crows all his life...f*ing Antivan politic is the only thing to blame.

Anyway,I understand your concern,if I'm the Warden in real life myself I won't trust a stranger so easily, especially the one tried to assassinate me...I believe "let's have a talk" is the key to really trust and understand someone.
