If you romanced or your friendship with Zevran is high enough, you'll learn that he doesn't really want to be in the Crows anymore, and he wanted to die in the Warden mission...it was a suicide mission for him...and much later, you can help him finish those Crows assassins went after him,and free him from their claws. The Warden is like the first real friend (lover) he ever had, since he had no choice but to be an assassin/slave for the Crows all his life...f*ing Antivan politic is the only thing to blame.

Anyway,I understand your concern,if I'm the Warden in real life myself I won't trust a stranger so easily, especially the one tried to assassinate me...I believe "let's have a talk" is the key to really trust and understand someone.

I know Zevran won't actually kill you, but the Warden doesn't when they let him free, and they have no reason to trust him enough to find anything out.

"Please let me go, I promise I won't try to kill you, even though I literally just did exactly that, because now my bosses are mad at me for not killing you even though I could just kill you in the next battle when your back is turned so I wouldn't have actually failed my mission. But its ok, I won't do that, because I hate my job and don't want to do it. Even though I just tried it. I won't again. You trust me right?".

I recruited them all because... the world will end without their help.

And even if someone wants to betray me... I still have my mabari on my side.

Great question.  If I were the HoF, I'd never recruit Sten (a murderer who slaughtered innocent children and was locked in a cage to die), Zevran (an assassin who is being paid to kill you, despite his lame argument that his one-attempt fail has led to his complete defection to your side), or Leliana (really, crazy?  the maker told you to help us out in a bar fight...... <backs away slowly towards the door>).  And probably wouldn't want to bring the giant golem that crushed it's last master and makes repeated 'death to my master' comments.

I'd be good with Alistair, Morrigan, Dog, Wynne, and Oghren, though.  I'd better start practicing with a bow and learning how to pick locks, though.  My roster is looking like a lot of locked chests will get left behind.

That pretty much was my roster in my first DAO game. I never found Leliana or Sten, didn't have Shale installed yet, and Wynne died because she didn't like what Morrigan had to say at the Circle. I believe I did recruit Zevran though. Still, good thing I was playing a rogue!

I would never recruit Oghren - a drunkyard with no sense at all.

I would maybe asked Dagna to come along, since she seems to be very knowledgable

The other person, I would maybe be a little reluctant would have been Leliana. Since we talking about our real life selfs here, I certainly would have a problem with the madwoman who claimed to hear the maker. Usually something like that is followed by mass murdering. Of course, Sten already did that, so he would have to stay out of the party too.

Instead of Sten and Leliana, I would probably ask Petra (from the circle of magi) and maybe Ser Bryant (the templar, who tried to help Lothering). I would even have helped him save the village people first.

And I would never allow Loghain to join. I would insist on him being punished in the most non-honourable way, I could think of.

I would probably be ok with the rest , even Zevran or Shale.

Morrigan would of course stay - not that she oozes trust, but her mother saved my life and I made a promise, so daugther dearest has to stay.

Alistair is the only other GW and the one , who by all rights should be in charge (I would give him a real hard timwe until he mans up and starts to take resonsibility)

Wynne is just perfect as a companion, no complains

Zevran. He already tried to kill me once. How could I ever sleep peacefully with my attempted assassin in camp?

Sten. A murderer and a follower of the Qun.

Morrigan. I would recruit her at the beginning as a favor to Flemeth and because she is a mage.  However, I would have kicked her out of my group after learning how sadistic she was.

Shale. Too creepy for me.

Leliana. Her saying she had a vision of the Maker proves she's either a nutjob or a liar.

Oghren. A full-blown alcoholic is not someone I'd want on my team.

If we include Awakening, then I'd chose not to recruit Justice (basically an abomination), Velanna (too much blood on her hands, I'd probably kill her) and Oghren (for the same reason as in Origins).  Nathaniel I might give a chance, though.

If I were really the Hero of Fereldan, I wouldn't have kept Zevran alive after his ambush encounter.  Alistair, Morrigan, Dog, Leliana, Oghren , and Wynne I accept with no issues. Sten would have be released to me with hesitancy. Shale would make a great Darkspawn battering ram. Loghain would die at the Landsmeet to Alistair.

For Awakening I'd still recruit everyone.

Oh wait we're including Awakening?

...uh...the question in that case would be who *would* I recruit. Nate, Sigrun and Justice would pretty much be it.

By Awakening, I've survived going toe-to-toe with the Arch-freaking-demon.

Something about that just makes regular people's death threats seem less intimidating.

Nathaniel: "I'm gonna kill you to avenge my father!"

Me: "Pft! Your dad had a castle full of guards and he couldn't kill me. Loghain had an army and he couldn't kill me. The Arch-freaking-demon had a whole darkspawn horde behind it and it couldn't kill me. Take your stuff and get out of here, kid."

Easy.

Loghain probably not- with forknowledge of The Stolen Throne, maybe. To be fair, I have never recruited Loghain.

Oghren is a deifnite no. Beligerently drunk midget that insults me and insists upon anything within two seconds of meeting me can go sod off.

Zevran is too slimy for my liking, in all honesty. Once you get to know his character he's fine, but before that the "Haha you got me trying to kill you!" situation is a little silly.

Definitely:

Sten- While being held captive for familicide, he's a giant that shows he's full-business and looking to atone for what he did. It's like looking at a tank that just shelled a nearby domacile and saying that because of that you shouldn't ride it to victory.

Morrigan- Swooping is good if it's being done by your team

Wynne- Healing is good if it's being done by your team

Maybe:

Alistair- Templar? Check. Constitution bonuses for friendship levels? Check. Good character developement, backstory, and romance options? Check.
Duncan issues, being a twit, not getting along with Morrigan, and being a punk about inviting certain new party members when your team is literally taking on an imortal god dragon creature and you need all the help you can get? Sadly, check.

Lilliana- Voices in your head was the first sign, love.

Shale- One hand? Stone hands. Other hand? Evisceration of Willhelm. With prior knowledge of the books? Most definitely.

I think the better question is who would I conscript, if I could...

Interesting point of view:

Zevran almost everyone refuses, but Nathaniel almost everyone accepts. Zevran had no personal reason to kill the warden, while Nathaniel had… Who can understand the people...?

(For me, both are okay :) )

Loghain - he dies in every playthrough (I have yet to get the achievement for having all party members and I can't see it changing any time soon). Don't trust a guy who teams up with a man who sneak killed a family in the middle of the night.

Wynne - because she likes to push her 'advices' on you, despite not asking for it. (My Cousland lost her mother, she didn't need this woman coming in and trying to be one to her).

Zevran - well, I would actually recruit him first because he was sent by Howe/Loghain but once I realised he didn't have any information on them, I would be cautious. The moment he expressed disapproval over me telling him to quit flirting with me, I would boot his ass out of the group so fast he wouldn't have time to gather his things.

Maybe Sten - but then again, I would have recruited him merely to ****** off the Chantry Mother (Which I really liked doing). It would depend on how much the Mother annoyed me and how much I found him useful.

Morrigan - that would depend on a few thing. One - Just because Flemeth saved me, it doesn't mean I want her daughter, especially since I am sure Flemeth had sent her daughter with us for a particular reason they are not telling us, 2 - the moment she asks me to kill her mother, I would back right out of that family drama and leave it well alone.

Oghren would depend on how I first met him - in the pub being completely drunk or meeting me at the entrance of the Deep Roads. Drunk - I would probably pass because I need people sober. Entrance - I probably would take him to have the extra weapon.

And I would be a rogue/Archery so I could provide support while Alistair/Dog/Shale take over the front line.

Who I would recruit - Alistair, because he is the best, Dog, because, Leliana because she does turn out to be useful and Shale, I don't care she killed her master. He found her in the Deep Road, took her home and experimented on her which probably led to her malfunctioning.

Am I the only person who would recruit Oghren?

His problematic drinking, poor hygiene and lecherous behaviour aside, you can at least count on Oghren to be extremely good at fighting, something even he admits that it's pretty much the only thing he excels at. Just get him mad, point him at something you want dead and they will probably end up in several pieces, all you have to do is just remember to stay out his way and duck occasionally.

Sure, he might offend everyone he comes across and he's not someone you'd want to spend much time around if you are the only one sober... but when it comes to killing Darkspawn, can't deny that the guy is perfectly qualified and has what it takes to be a Warden.

No. Me too. I constantly wonder how choosy the people. As if they were searching for suitable candidates for the church choir. ;)

This is why I don't object to recruiting Loghain either, since it's a very pragmatic move.

Regardless of his treacherous and criminal actions, the man is still an experienced General who genuinely wants to save Ferelden, so we might as well put him to work helping us do, instead of throwing his experience and skills away for the sake of revenge.

Besides, if I've taken all that time and effort to put Alistair on the throne, I'm going to make sure he doesn't die before he gets to sit on it. I'd rather risk Loghain with me on the frontlines, than the future monarch.

I tend to play incredible practical and pragmatic characters, which is why I agree with the Qunari sentiment of not wanting to throw anyone who could still be of potential use to them, it's a very sensible perspective. Although, I wouldn't mind screw them into obedience, that's too unethical for my tastes and crosses too many lines.

Oghren's… attitude towards women is off-putting. I'd rather he tone it down, but it wouldn't exactly stop me from recruiting him.

Sten is a murderer. While I was interested in hoping he'd redeem himself, realistically, I wouldn't want him in.

Shale calling me "it" is obnoxious, so I'd leave her to rot.

Morrigan is horribly condescending and obnoxious and treats emotions like weakness, so NO THANK YOU.

Loghain is awful and does not deserve forgiveness and frankly I find it very hard to believe I'd recruit him in the game as it is, so there's no way I would recruit him.

Zevran tried to kill me, so goodbye.

If we're counting Awakening, then I wouldn't recruit Velanna. While I sympathize with her plight, she went way too far in killing humans.

Another squeamish recruiter :)

Guilty as charged  :) . But at least I'd give Zevran and Shale a chance (and I probaly would pick up Leliana and Sten despite better judgement, I'm a carebear, I would not let the mad cloister sister and the half starved guy stay on their own).

The only companion, I really would not recruite is Oghren - a drunkyard is a liability and normally it doesn't end with semi-funny jokes, like in the game. If this would have been real life, Oghren probably would slept through some of the fighting, get drunk in the wrong moments, maybe insult some Arl or two and maybe destroy your chance of ever succeeding in fighting the archdemon. So even if it sounds harsh, I would never let an alcolholic or drug addict join something so important. And make him a Grey Warden? Neverever, I'd sooner make Connor or Dog or the giant spider next door a GW. I'd give Oghren to a healer and tell him, to come back, when he stops drinking (maybe one of the circle mages not currently in my group could help him)

Interesting point of view:

Zevran almost everyone refuses, but Nathaniel almost everyone accepts. Zevran had no personal reason to kill the warden, while Nathaniel had… Who can understand the people...?

I have to agree. And if you go through all possible dialogue options with Zevran (even the one, where jokingly say, that you should consider joining the Crows), you learn, that he does not like the Crows. He likes his job and he likes the luxury, but he hates not being able to make his own decisions and not really being free. You can give him that chance - and to be frankly, he becomes one of the most reliable companions imo later on, when you befriend him.

Unless I'm on a pure role-playing save, I play the game as close to what I'm thinking is the realistic/wisest course-of-action, so I do not recruit any optional companion whom I do not think should really be recruited.

In DAO I was able to rationally recruit all the optional choices, except Velanna, whom I brought on for RP reasons (Warden was a Dalish elf, so he understood). Yes, IMO, you can rationally recruit Zevran! The only guy I turned out being "wrong" about recruiting was Justice-nonsense.

I had no problem with accepting those who were "forced" on me, either. Alistair was the closest, due to ideological differences, but I did not feel it was too much for us to work together (well, not until the Loghain thing, hahaha).

DA2, though? I wanted no part of Anders, even though I loved him in DA:A and was sympathetic to his cause. Again, I soured on Justice quckly, so when I saw that Justice was not only part of him but had pretty much gone demonic? Hahaha, nope. Then after turning him down, he showed up on my Squad Screen. -_-

In DA:I, I do not recruit Cole or Iron Bull. I also was iffy on Sera but agreed due to the lack of rogue skills on my team. I went into the game spoiled so I knew about Solas. That said, I feel like I would have trusted him, even if I thought his opinions were bat*** insane.
