I played this game once a year ago on a last gen console. Played an elf, romanced Solas (oh the angst and feels). That character slipped seamlessly right into the story and the big picture. I particularly loved the motivation an Elf Inquisitor has to explore all of the elven lore and resources available in all of these backwoods areas around Orlais.

Started a new character last week on a PS4 (aside: the graphics and details are so much better!), human female mage, and I am enjoying exploring the political side to the story, which seems more appropriate for the character, but I miss my elf. Now that I have obtained Skyhold, I miss my elf. There is so much to the story that just fits for an Elvhen Inquisitor vs. a human/qunari/dwarf Inq.

Female elves look like they would disintergrate with one use of shield bash!

Its possibly a bit of elf-bullying from me but I can only really play if the character actually looks durable/tough enough to survive the events of the game. Elves look too frail to me, thats all (I realise that they are supposed to look that way, short, thin, supple). From a story perspective I can understand what you mean to a degree, but not everybody would enjoy playing that plot as much as others, so its all about personal opinion in the end. Thats why choice exists!

I can't say ANY of the races of either gender look like they could survive:

-Being chewed up and flung around by a dragon

-Being engulfed in dragon fire or mage attack spells

-Having to wear those horrible oatmeal pajamas every day

-Sex with Iron Bull

-Falling off of a tower and into the fade

-Falling with an airborne ruin back to the ground after killing Corypheus

-A fight with any of the magical or huge fantasy creatures

And so on. I do agree that the elf body for both genders looks deformed though. Slim is fine IMO but they look like someone just scaled them smaller horizontally. The arms are sucked into the body, the shoulders are as wide as a child's, the male elf has breasts, the female elf has waaay bigger breasts/butt than what a person with that little body fat would actually have (without implants). I wish they would get a body overhaul (I was definitely happy with the face overhaul since the player doesn't have to have a DA2 donkey/Na'vi face).

Nefla, I agree. Today's slim women look about the same size as a Elven female.. I suspect they could use a magic staff and if they been hitting the gym they could use a sword and shield.  We know the Dalish doesn't have a easy life. The elf explains what its like to be Dalish to Josephine.

Those pajamas look cool on a human male. Because that's who they were for. Not the Qunari who looks like Grape Ape dressed in a suit. Or the one inch chest man boob elf boy. I'd prefer this game NOT be a comedy.

It's not even pajamas. It's the same type of  getup Tywin wears :P

It would have been better if they didn't have Specialist Traynor's voice and had more of a celtic accent like the other elves in the game but for me playing as a female elf is perfect. I'd previously played as other races but once I'd experienced it I can't really go back. The fact that I found the dalish rude in the first two games meant that role playing as one and making decisions based seeing things from their perspective made things all the more interesting.

It looks slightly less horrible on the Human male, but no it still looks horrible. The only thing it has in common with Tywin's outfit is the clasps. It's skin tight like a stretchy pajama, and has all the weird seams on the pants which reminds me of long underwear. Plus the beige color makes it look dingy and old. There is nothing good about that abomination

Story wise I think so but playing any character can kind of fit I suppose but female elf is definitely my favourite way of playing this game.

Beige? It's kind of grey to me. And I think it clicks well with what appears to be Trevelyan's tarot colors. Grey and gold. I admit it's tight though. lol

Question: Can you play as a skeptical Dalish? That is, a Dalish Inquisitor who doesn't really believe in the elven gods or the Maker?

I second that. I think you can express an interest in elven gods when talking to Cassandra, Sera and I think vivienne but when you don't take those dialogue options you can just tell yourself they're a non believer.

Shock? Disbelief? Some sort of emotional reaction at all? I mean, Sera says "The Dalish. Are going. To. $£%@ themselves" while the Dalish Inquisitor is standing next to her both utterly unaffected and nearly instantly accepting of the truth of the claims - initially there are a few caveats, but soon enough the Inquisitor is saying "These freed slaves actually fought back against the Evanuris posing as gods" without a trace of doubt.

(video snipped)

All the dialogue seems to be written under the assumption that you're not a believer, that's my problem with it. Even the line that is written specifically for an elf has some of that attitude, with the reference to "Dalish legends".

Thanks. But I don't really see how the character stays a believer to the end of that sequence anyway. An elaborate deception? By who? To what end? (This may be a failing of mine; I don't have any personal understanding of how belief works.)

We're up against the limits of the medium to some extent here. Unless Bio wants to replace every one of those IQ reaction lines in the vid with a full-on wheel convo, I don't see how we do better than the reaction lines we got. Even if I had a PC with a crisis of faith, he wouldn't go to pieces in front of the staff.

Can you recall if you had access to the "I don't believe in gods" line in the final conversation with Corypheus?

I think a skeptical Dalish is all you can play. Unless you just avoid the options that dismiss any and all "god" type characters.

My first two characters were elves, and it is pretty obvious how the game was designed for human protagonist. I struggled a lot with my characters, at almost every converstaion, I often felt like not a single reply fits my character.

First part of the story is human and chantry centered, and I still don't understand how an elf (or a dwarf, or a qunari) could be so easily called the herald of Andraste! I could understand if this happened after closing the breach, and Haven, but before that? Not a single human even doubts it. This part just doesn't work.

And the second part - with all the elven revelations is even worse. I was seriously dissapointed at how my chars reacted to all this. I mean, here are actual ancient elves, in an actual temple of Mythal, and the Inquisitor is just... smiling silly . Then of course Abelas says you are not his people, and you are again, like, whatever . Tresspaser was also a little dissapointing. You are Fen'harel? Ok, I will believe everything you say, although my people say you are a trickster <_<.

I think with the elf they should have at least chosen a city elf, not dalish.

I still like my elves, and my canon will most likely be a female elf, but humans just fit the story better

I played a faithful Dalish up to the bitter end. What Pride Had Wrought and The Final Piece were a bit tricky, but I managed.

All you've really got at that point is propaganda by Fen'harel, notorious trickster god. To me thats pretty easy to doubt even if you don't have a deep investment in it being wrong.

If you're going to mess with the foundation of the PCs faith and culture then you should be willing to spring for a few dialogue wheels. They don't even necessarily need to go to full cutscene mode, just bring up the wheel.

I can see how some people would want this maybe the dalish IQ internalises it. If you are in shock you wouldn't say much at all. This was how I saw my character being during the temple of Mythal and Trespasser. Disbelief would've been a nice option I agree. You can get angry at Solas for telling you your vallaslin is a slave marking but you can't not want to believe the more substantial revelations.

I also really wish I could tell Sera to shut up sometimes, like at that point in the video.

There is an argument between two npcs at Haven about 'people having trouble believing Andraste would send an Elf to do her work'. I think at this stage people wouldn't have much choice but to accept you as they need you to seal the breach.

elenura, I agree and that's another reason why I like playing a elf. Those self righteous Chantry people thinks they are superior and "POOF!"  a elf shows up and is believed to be saved from the concave and sent by Andraste and that scares them..

I like that line  "The Maker would never send a Elf!"

Another one (well close enough)..

Leliana: You speak for Andraste-

My Elven Inquisitor Camine: I speak for no one except myself.

Well, I never heard this. It is an ambient conversation, and is easily missed. And people don't accept you, because they need you to seal the Breach. They actually beleive that you are the chosen one, and was saved by Andraste, and they spread this rumor. And no one is asking: Hey, why would our prophet save some dirty knife-ear? Josy mentions something about wild stories about the dalish, but that's it. You don't experience any of it by yourself.

And this is why the story doesn't work for me - you could be an elven necromancer, or a qunari mercenary, but the game treats you as a human.

Of course you do. The priestess at Val Royeaux says "The Maker would send no elf" and the guests at the Winter Palace are equally astonished.

And if regular npcs don't count in your opinion, Blackwall and Florianne also address this.
