I'm curious if anyone does this? It was always something that confused me about CR when working in the toolset, is that the toolset doesn't change/calculate the CR for you. If I create a human NPC fighter, and give it 6 levels of fighter, the CR remains a 1.

I've been using this calculator to fool around with. I like it because it doesn't stop at level 20 characters like some other calculators do.

I get that CR really only affects XP rewarded, and I'm cool with that. I was just wondering if anyone else messes with it.

I just finished an encounter in the pirate cove for my campaign using a party of 5. The enemies were a fighter, a sorcerer and a wizard (both spellcasters using my custom AI library, so much more difficult than stock). It felt pretty challenging (my paladin did die, and if I were using SoZ style death system, which I'm thinking about converting over to, he'd have needed a rez). So after fiddling with the CR calculator, it seemed if I made the three enemies each CR3, it comes out to about what I felt it was as a fight.

Anyone do this with their CR's? And does anyone really know what determines CR? I saw a really complicated formula yesterday and that talked about offense and defense, but I couldn't see how they came up with actual numbers.

I use a different CR calculator that has all of the options on one screen instead of separated into tabs.

CR affects both XP awarded, and the reported expected difficulty when you examine the creature in-game.  The toolset can't calculate it for you on an individual creature because CR is technically for the whole encounter, not for an individual creature.  It's all explained in detail on page 48 of the Dungeon Master's Guide, with tables and examples.

The creature creator plugin has a cr calculator. You just click on a creature blueprint, then go to plugins/creature creator/calculate selected chalange rating(s).
