Knight enchanter is still very strong defensively - it's basically impossible to die as one even on nightmare - but it's offensive capabilities took a hit. Damage wise it's probably the weakest of the three mage specs. The defensive nature of it makes it pretty good for a first nightmare run, especially if you cover for that with more offensive minded party members.
But ultimately, all specialisations are perfectly capable of completing NM mode, so really I'd just suggest you play what seems fun, and that is a very subjective measure. ![]()

+1, you know better than us what you like and what you don't like. I happen to think Rift Mage is the most fun, followed by Tempest Archer, but I also had fun controlling all of the companions, from IB Reaver to Dorian Necro, and they all have their moments.
That said, I had the most difficulty fitting my DW Rogue Lavellan into the story. As a Dalish elf, I had a hard time headcannoning why he was involved in all these epic events with a bunch of shem. I didn't even have the romance option with Solas, since I ran a male elf. Heck, why would a Dalish hunter even be using two daggers instead of a bow? Don't get me wrong, the combat was great fun, but storywise, meh. So I played him as a Jerkquisitor and did a lot of very mean things, like gave Viv the wrong heart.
