Since I just unlocked it and I haven't seen a thread on it in the last twelve months (can't be necroing, after all).

Besides being good on a Turian, what are some particularly suitable applications for this thing? Because it apparently provides a crutch for bad aimers like me, I assume the damage is mediocre. I'm using the SI this week - any value in trying it out?

Found a reasonable niche for it with the Vanilla Humie Adept. There are better options, but somethings gotta take care of those sniper amps.

QFI. Disruptor ammo and vulnerability VI gear; use sabotage to stun, aim for the head. Stickies can help taking down big units while the gun is at low level. I actually find it teaches to go for headshots, and rewards doing so. Fair warning: if you go in expecting another BW, you will be disappointed.

I used to dislike the gun, until I stopped being happy with bodyshots, and actually learned to line headshots up (and I was still using SR amps, which of course remain a valid choice). Now it's my favourite gun on the QFI  . I find this setup to be really effective vs geth, so if you want to try it out, maybe pick them.

The SI works really well too, but then again both are superb sniper rifle users.

Being an unenthusiastic sniper, I can't offer direct experience - but a regular gold/plat buddy of mine has his Asari Adept permanently outfitted with the Valiant for Stasis head shots. Seems to be working for him...

It's the poor mans Black Widow on the SI, GI and QFI.

Not a bad gun given the high rate of fire and short re-load time, it's just that it's out performed completely by other guns.

Everyone sees it as a weaker BW that needs 2 shots to kill mooks and doesn't do as much damage to armor due to the heavier rifle's superior full damage double/triple hits, but you can make it as strong or stronger than that rifle on certain setups. This is how I use it.

http://kalence.drupa...13O55343!E0GA.G

Arc grenades, drill rounds and thermal scope to remove the shields of and then OHK things in the face through walls. Higher rate of fire means that you can wipe mooks faster than with a BW provided you can aim for headshots (not hard given that the arcnade stuns everything). Since equipping drill with no piercing mod also does not result in lower damage on double hits, and drill 3 gives you 2.5 meters of distance, the Valiant's sustained DPS advantage will enable it to outdamage the BW against heavy armor as well (also have to factor in Tacscan's quicker cooldown with the lighter weight rifle making that power more worthwhile to use).

It's still a lot harder to use than the BW and its OHK bodyshots all day err day with phasics, but is undoubtedly very effective if you are accurate and can make the conditions for it to oneshot multiple mooks. A character with chain overload or area energy drain would probably be good for the same style of remove shields>headshot all the things, but no quarian has overload and the frogs stole Energy Drain from us.

Why not on Hsol?  :crying:  6 Shots and 70% damage are pretty dece.

Also, weapon info says that Valiant has reduced rate of fire. Go figure.

QMI with Nade Capacity 5 and Incindiary Ammo;

Stagger all with Arc Nades for easy shots. Or shot first, ask Arc Nade questions later for fire explosions. Or a combination of both.

It can be used on the HSol also of course, but I prefer infiltrators for sniping.

Hsol is mainly a shotgun kit for me :)

GI,GE,FQI,and SI are good choices.I completed the challenge for it,but have only played a few games with it since then, because there are too many better SR options.

QFI with Valiant was the combination that got me into sniping.  Fast reload, so no need to fluff about with reload-cancelling.  Fast-firing with next to no recoil is forgiving of my poor aim.  The lower damage compared with some other snipers rewards headshots (that I consistently fail to get, despite Sabotage holding things still for me).

I prefer the Widow these days, but the Valiant is nonetheless fantastic; and doing the challenge for it is never really much of a challenge :)

I like it on the SI, my designated sniper class. It's not the most effective from a min/max perspective but it's actually my favorite sniper rifle. You can put out a ton of shots in just a short amount of time and the Cloak-boosted/proxy mine-debuffed damage is plenty good enough

It's not a bad gun, but it lacks a niche. It's light, and it's a SR, so in theory it can be good for characters who are cooldowns dependant and are better played at mid/long range. I guess that several engineers can fit into this category (geth engineer notably), a few adepts too (I suggest the volus).

Or, as others suggested, you can put it on infiltrators with shield stripping abilities and enjoy the damage bonus from Tactical Cloak. Personally my favorite infiltrator to use it on is the drell, as his high movement speed results in an almost constant firing with the Valiant.

at I, I'm not sure how it works, but at 10 it's almost a beast and a great sniper option for casters

My FQI rocks either the Black Widow or Javelin and I play most other infiltrators with non sniper weapons

It's definitely a good synergy with him and HM (of course).

Mine is not at level X yet so I really didn't use it much.

But judging form the damage stats:

Viper: 365
Valiant: 515
Mantis: 886
Black Widow: 923

It's obviously a much better Viper (with even higher RoF), but as others have said my thoughts are exactly the same: it doesn't really have a niche in this game. In most situations BW is a better choice because the way the game is designed; it is powerful enough to one shot or two shot most unshielded/shielded grunts, no matter the rate of fire - why would you spend extra time putting in the second shot to finish something off.

But when I actually think about it when I look at the numbers is I remember where BW is lacking is sustained dps against larger enemies like Atlas and Geth Prime (compared to some higher dps weapons). It's also a reason I'm ussualy not carrying this gun as a main sniper weapon class but mostly as a secondary weapon or for a class that is more focused on powers and cannot fully utilize the spec of oneshot rifles like for example the GI can.

However, the strong point of Valiant is decent damage per shot with very low recoil and much higher fire rate compared to BW.

RoF Valiant: 100

RoF BW: 60

If we compensate time for recoil compensation adjustment (which is a hidden dps reduction in any statistic on paper) on top of lower fire rate this significantly lowers potential dps on BW: If you are going for precise aiming like headshots or chasing smaller targets, it will take an additional opportunity cost in spent time to fully utilize this, and this is something that is often missed when talking about raw dps. This is often also the reason why oneshot rifles are prefered - it is higher risk for higher reward, but even if you take a bit longer to land just one good headshot, it is ussualy worth more than taking time to do this 3 times, or missing half of it on BW with quick sloppy aiming "just because" you have 3 shots, is the dps and lost time you will never get back, but even so each of these 3 guns has it's niche. It just happens that BW is still more useful than Valiant in more situations because of the dynamics of the game.

In case you would not need time to readjust your shots on the BW (but in reality you do), actual dps numbers would be these:

Valiant single clip dps: 660
BW single clip dps: 923

Valiant multi clip dps: 566

BW multi clip dps: 464

BW multi clip dps (reload cancel): 632

Valiant multi clip dps reload cancel (do you even? I don't!): 736

It's been a while since i used it but I don't remember you could reload cancel Valiant. Does anybody really do that? I thought it's fast enough for not having to do it, but apparently you can achieve even higher numbers with it - I didn't test this. Source

So yeah, in sustained dps race the Valiant can actually be a great gun on some classes. It is also much lighter than BW. So yes, Valiant can be much more than decent. Just use it right.

Valiant is my favourite SR on my SI.  While not as damaging per shot as the Black Widow, its high rate of fire and fast reload means you can essentially become a sniper turret.  If you're not firing it nonstop, you're doing it wrong.

I don't use it. But I guess it's just as good as BW for kits that are more power focused than pew pew. I use a BW with my QFI over standard Widow or Javelin because flexibility. I can be a little less careful with it than a single shot rifle. Valiant holds the same traits, especially if you can head shot constantly. It's a bit too weak against bosses for my taste though.
