Dalish Elf is my most played origin in DAO and favorite race in the series. Thematically speaking, if you see the Witch Hunt DLC as the 'capstone' that ends the game, then the Dalish elf origin seems like the most appropriate since the eluvian plays a direct role in you becoming a Grey Warden at the beginning and having Morrigan go through it and leave you towards the end is a pretty parallel. I always thought that was neat.

I loved that mod. It rekindled my love for elves in the game and I got several Surana playthroughs using it.   Before that I tried as hard as I could to make her look as elfy as I could.

I can't play DA:O without it now :D

I hated elves in DA:O because of their look (little humans with pointed ears, and then I discovered a mod that allows you to make them appear like in DA2, but less Avatar's aliens looking and it became my most played origin.

Ooooohhhhhhhh, sounds interesting. What mod is it? I'd like to play the City Elf origin (and make the most stupid warden ever, lol. Afterall, my Amell was the smart one who didn't keep Loghian alive while romancing Alistair... She'll be the US warden pretty much...)

It's only a capstone to me, if I actually like the object that ruined his life. lol. I have to come up with a clever workaround to do that. It's so much easier for me with a Cousland, because they don't care about any of it. Plus, Morrigan is pretty horrible to elves. She's willing to sacrifice City Elves for a small con boost. I don't see the big love story here.

Or you could... you know... just not take Morrigan with you to the alienage. And to be fair, she is pretty horrible to everyone. It isn't a race thing.

Don't make excuses. lol. I think the groups are mostly all present anyways, despite the gameplay. That's just a technical limitation. Same with Mass Effect. They usually still comment on events as if they were there.

Anyways.. her attitude works for me on some characters, but not an elf who cares about justice on any level. I don't think she's a natural fit for Dalish or something, just because of Witch Hunt. So I'm gonna offer the opposing view here. I'd have to play a Dalish like Velanna, where you're really smug and still think of City Elves like some joke (like that scene in Awakening).

So you just pretend that she was there, speaking to your character in favor of killing the elves? How odd. Unfortunately, I lack that much imagination.

Well, she is a better fit than you think. Human society is as alien to Morrigan as it is to the Dalish Warden.

As for the morality issue, I am aware that some people consider her unromance-able unless your character is a total douche. And while sharing her views does make everything easier, the romance arc also encourages playing a hero that challenges them and believes there is good underneath.

So the world is different, if she's simply not there? I'm not trying to make a big stretch here. I always assumed the followers were around, no matter what. Like Liara will comment on things she hasn't necessarily done in-game, for example.

In any case, I can't erase what Morrigan would do, if she was there. She puts survival and power above all else. That's kind of her schtick.

Just to be clear though, I said in another thread recently that one could do it as a non-douche too. But to me, it reminds me of when I was young...trying to force issues with women who simply weren't good for me. lol. To each their own.

I find it pretty amusing that Ashalle wears Elgar'nan's vallaslin.

Don't let that motherly demeanor fool you, she must've been quite the hardcore hunter in her youth. :P

You have to be pretty masochistic to get the Elgar'nan tat.

I wish we got to talk to her in DA2...

Really? Then why he didn't recruit Elissa Cousland right away? Elissa is his first choice but because he CAN'T recruit her then he must compromise and look at Ser Gilmore. Untill Bryce have no choice then Duncan manipulate the situation to force recruiting Elissa

Similar here, do you think the Dalish will allow their clansmen to be recruited by shemlen just like that? He need a strong basis to recruit a Dalish. The Dalish just don't care and they plan to move away anyway. Duncan desperately need a recruit, the only way is to manipulate the Dalish gullibility and ignorance about the matter.

They have the Right of Conscription sure but that right can be removed by the King.

What do you think would happen if Duncan made an enemy of one of the most powerful nobles in the country.

Duncan has to be careful and although he can conscript anyone he has to ask himself is this person worth the hassle?

In the story he makes his preference known for the young Cousland but Bryce shuts him down hard, there is no room for argument there.

TMP did it.  This mod,  Elves have a nice balance of DAO and DA2, giving them a unique look.  Warning: you may not like what was done with Zevran, but you don't have to use his morph TMP made, I just used his vanilla look with the altered elf models.  Slightly different but not too much.

There are some pics in his Gallery section of the mod.  I would show you the gorgeous Surana I had but lost all my photos to a fried HD and Imageshack closing down their free jpg hosting and removing all my pics there.

My female Warden is dalish. I love Tamlen and how heartbreaking his story is. When you find him in the camp... I usually just let my companions kill him because I can't do it myself. In the end my Mahariel made the ultimate sacrifice. Tamlen was her soulmate so with him gone part of her was already dead.

Also playing an elven Warden - especially Dalish - when you learn about the whole "you have 30 years - at most - to live" feels much more like a real death sentence (for a human or city elf it's not as bad since their lives are short anyway). Also it's clear that ever since you discovered that mirror you were doomed to die. So you leave your clan and all you know behind just to spend the remaining year of your life fighting darkspawn and finally killing the archdemon to end the Blight. I think it's good that at least Mahariels death meant something. She died for a worthy cause, even if it was not really her own decision. I liked the ending with the ruler of Ferelden granting the dalish new lands... too bad that didn't actually happen, for some reason? It would have made the sacrifice that much more meaningful because then you would have accomplished something that was personally important to your character.

So do Dalish elves live longer than city elves?  I know Zathrian did but that was an anomaly, I had just assumed they lived as long as any other elf.

According to David Gaider some of them do. He said something about in one interview. I've also seen one comment from one other BW writer that said they don't, so... If there is no official "yes or no" then I guess it's left vague for a reason.

If they do I think it's because the Dalish have a healthier lifestyle and easy access to healing magic.

Gheyna also says the Nature of the Beast quest that they live longer..

I remember at the time DAO was new, I was a little more skeptical.

Whether that means anything with the taint though, who knows.

If you want to talk about sad, my headcanon for my female Amell was that she hadn't yet realized people outside the Circle (where "everybody was kissing everybody," to quote Anders in DA2) generally insisted on monogamy. She told Ghenya what she'd done honestly expecting to be thanked and not realizing what was about to happen to Cammen and Ghenya's relationship.

Ah okay, thanks.

It's as clear as mud then.  I guess that leaves us to make up our own RP.

Yeah, it's all the organic kale and quinoa.   City elves are probably downing hot dogs and fries.

City elves live in disease infested slums and have no healers and no herbalists.  It would be strange if they didn't have shorter life expectancies.

Yep I'd imagine so, but I meant more as a genetic comparison.....it would be interesting if the Dalish could harness a little of their old immortality and yet it was lost to the city elves.

It doesn't make much sense to me...

I could believe being cut off from the Fade and all that made them weak... and when humans showed up, maybe they just blamed them. But still?
