I think I need help, I'm addicted to stripmining every planet i run accross.  I generally just keep firing probes until the planet reads "Depleted", then I fire a few more for good measure, just to make sure there's nothing left.  I've only visited 3 systems so far, and I already have 75000 platinum, and large quantities of the others too (50k palladium comes in second, with iridium a close third at 44k).  I have more resource than I have upgrades to spend them on, maybe I should play through some missions to unlock some more but i'm just too addicted to stripmining planets!

Probes are another issue, I generally have to head back to a system with a fuel depot to buy more probes at least once per system, sometimes twice.   I fired 23 probes at a planet earlier today, and it wasn't a large one either, it was a small rocky planet.

So, 3 questions then.  First of all, is there somewhere to buy more probes?  Secondly, how many resources am i actually going to need?  and thirdly, is anyone else out there doing the same thing as me?

Two of the upgrades to the Normandy are more fuel and 30 more probes, so that should make you a happy camper. Secondly some of the upgrades are damn expensive. Eventually they get up to 25k+ of whatever resource for just one upgrade. The Med-Bay upgrade to remove your scars is 50k of one resource alone. I think thats the most expensive upgrade though.

I probably shouldn't tell you that with upgrades you have up to 60 probes. I feel like I'm enabling you.

Be careful though, I played through all Loyalty missions and every side mission I ran into... doing so with mining on the side now and then on my smoke-breaks :P Ran into a few missions then also then...

I ended up with 35k+ Element Zero, 110K+ atleast of each of the other ones. The Normandy crew probably thought they worked on a mining barge.

I just didn't have anything to spend it on :P I already hated the scanning planets part of the game, now even more since I got nothing to use it on.

Someone should make a chart of exactly how much of each mineral you need in total to get every upgrade in the game.

I have the same addiction. I spent hours today stripping planets clean. The upside though - whenever an upgrade is unlocked you don't have to worry about having enough minerals for it!

Now that i've got my head around it, I really like the new system in place. I dont' feel compelled to mine every planet, but I have every planet available to mine should I need it, so i can focus on my missions and my upgrades.

Yeah, I want to know where you can get those upgrades as well. My hunch was that Tali would be the one to suggest them, given how the Quarians are salvage guru's. But that was not the case. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Thane gives the option to get 60 probes instead of 30, I'm not sure who gives the increased speed and fuel though.

I have found 2 upgrades that you CAN do multiple times but so far their utility eludes me so there are things you can continually spend minerals on. Like most here I pretty much stripmined the first few worlds but after that started being real picky about when I mined. In most cases unless I have an urgent need for a mineral its normally a few probes just for the heck of it unless the planet is rich in which case I normally drop it one level. One mineral that I seem to have an over abundance of is Palladium. Just wondering if I've missed something because it seems to be the one mineral not that often used.

One other thing of note is that you can mine EVEN when the planet text says that to do so is dangerous i.e. in the geth system with fleets of geth you can mine the planets. I would have expected that there is the one time you would not have that option. Yet I did some mining and there is NOTHING to stop me going back if I want to later on.

When I explore a system I usually don't send out a probe. I have found that strip mining is VERY enjoyable and if I deplete one planet then that usually leads me to strip mining the system, which inevitably leads me to strip mining the nebula.

You hold your finger on the right mouse button (RMB) and that activates the scanner. Then you move the mouse while still pressing the RMB until you see a spike in mineral quantities (you can get spikes for more than one mineral). Then, with your hand still on the RMB you press the LMB and it launches a probe in that spot.

If you see a spike for Element Zero, I suggest you keep at it until the planet is depleted. Its not found on all planets the same way the others are, so when you see a scan spike for it make sure you strip the whole planet. Its like being bumped up to first class due to a booking error, you want to make sure you enjoy all the champagne and fois gras.

Edit: I wanted to add that like a previous poster, I find a lot of Palladium. I accumulated alot at first, but then most of the Normandy Armor upgrades and Heavy Skin Weaves (or maybe it was some other body armor upgrade) use it in large quantities, and I was real happy to have it then.

I posted this in another thread about scanning.

To research every single upgrade you need the following:

eezo: 38.5k (+3750 for every respec, if you respec)

iridium: 200k

platinum: 270k (-50k if you do not upgrade medial research [which you shouldn't need to unless you're a vain Renegade])

palladium: 195k (-25k if you do not upgrade your melee attack [which you shouldn't need to unless you're a melee Vanguard or a weird Soldier])

-----

Breakdown:

Light Weapons

iridium: 55k for Assault Rifle, 55k for SMG

platinum: 55k for Shotgun, 55k for Sniper Rifle

palladium: 55k for Pistol

Heavy Weapons

iridium: 60k

Biotic

eezo: 11k

Tech

eezo: 11k

Medi-gel

platinum: 55k

Shields

palladium: 55k

Squad

eezo: 3k for Subject Zero, 3k for Mordin, 7.5k for Shepard bonus power, 3750 for each respec

iridium: 0k

platinum: 20k for Grunt, 20k for Legion

palladium: 55k for Shepard (-25k if you do not upgrade the melee attack damage)

Normandy

eezo: 3k

iridium: 30k

platinum: 65k (-50k if you do not upgrade medial research [which you shouldn't need to unless you're a vain Renegade])

palladium: 30k

-----

Hope this helps someone.

FreeKnight81 posted that in another topic earlier. I don't know if anyone has verified it, but it fits in with what I have been hearing (people have been saying ~200k of each resource except ezero)

Strip-mining a whole system seems to be the logical way to go. Then you don't find yourself asking "Hmm. Is anything left in (blank) system?"

PC only: I'm hardly an expert, but I have found that having a customizable gaming mouse helps. I switch the speed way up during the search and can swipe a whole hemisphere in seconds. When there's a bump, I switch the speed down and down again to zero in.

Is there any strategy to do over zealous mining? I usually scan as much as possible on each planet but it gets tedious. Any tips?

Andros if it gets tedious then just space it out. I mine in between missions when I need to relax for a bit.

I'm addicted to strip mining as well! I'm not happy unless every planet in a system is depleted. That way I know I didn't miss anything! ;)

I am on my second playthrough and I noticed that Gas giants never have anomalies and never have a scanner result better than moderate. As such I am deciding to not bother with them.

Has anyone encountered a Gas giant that was designated as rich or had an anomaly?
