Suicide Mission - How do I get Garrus to catch me?

So, at the end of the suicide mission, when Shepard leaps to the Normandy, what determines who helps Shepard climb aboard? I've noticed that, if you take Miranda along, she always seems to be the one to pull you up, no matter what. Beyond that, I have no concrete rules for this choice. And I might be wrong about Miranda, for all I know.

I'm aiming for a specific shot and I'd like Garrus to be the one to pull my Shepard up. How do I get this?

Not that I'm necessarily above it, but I was kinda hoping it wouldn't come to that...

There was a thread about that. I believe its the squadmate that is chosen second. Or at least the icon of the squadmate on the left on the screen. If for some reason, that character dies while fighting the reaper, it will be the other squadmate, and if both are killed, it will be whoever wasn't fighting the reaper. Don't know what determines who helps Shepard into the Normandy if both squadmates are dead

Can you imagine how far you'd have to go back to get everyone unloyal?? *shudder*

If Garrus is the only one left, Shepard dies. Two squadmates are needed alive for Shepard to live and get the scene showing a squadmate helping Shepard into the Normandy

I've seen that the squaddie listed on the right side of the screen in the final party is the one Shepard catches when falling off the platform. However, the one on the left isn't necessarily the one who helps Shepard on to the Normandy. Saw a party of loyal Miranda and Zaeed where Miranda was both the caught and the catcher. Saw another of loyal Tali  and Jack and Tali was both the one caught and the catcher. And I've observed that it doesn't seem possible to have Miranda in your party and not have her be the one who helps Shepard. Maybe this is working off some priority list?

I suppose I may just have to try squad combos with Garrus and every squadmate and see if I can get it to work.

Choose Garrus and the same squadmate, but choose Garrus first. If that makes the difference, ok. If not, try again and choose him second when picking squadmates to go with you to fight the reaper

Picking the squadmate first doesn't necessarily lead to them being the right or left portrait character since loading a squad isn't 100% consistent, at least not in ME2.  If you are trying to flip flop portraits, you just need to reload a save until they are where you want.

Well there is also this thread, which I vaguely remembered:

For Science! Who's falling on the platform? Who rescues Shepard?

Who is going to pull up Shepard:
Miranda -> Zaeed -> Kasumi -> Tali -> Jacob -> Mordin -> Samara -> Grunt -> Legion -> Garrus -> Jack -> Thane
Unknown: Morinth's place
Note: If one squadmate dies during the final battle, the surviving squadmate will pull Shepard onto the Normandy.

I knew there had to be a priority list of some kind involved. Thank you very much for finding that.

This is really weird. Skinny Tali instead of Garrus or Grunt...

And, if you want Thane to pull you up, the other squaddie has to die, so there's that.

What? The one time Thane helped Shepard get in the Normandy, the other squadmate was alive. At the time, I had no idea who or how its determined who helps Shepard into the Normandy

Do you remember the other details from that run?  Was it a femshep romancing Thane by any chance?

No. Just that it happened before ME3 was released

No. I don't romance anyone in ME2 when playing femshep.

Try taking Thane with you. That's the only way I've ever been able to get Garrus to be the one to pull Shepard onto the ship,

Jack works as well, tested it recently.

I was looking at this thread - and pretty awed.  I've done a LOT of playthroughs of ME2.  I thought I'd done it all, seen it all and had it all on lockdown.

This thread takes it to new territory - and I like that.

I'm pretty sure Garrus did it when I completed ME2 using him and Tali as my final companions. (Or maybe just wishful thinking)

I just beat ME2 again and had Miranda and a non-romanced Jacob with me. Shepard caught Jacob and then he returned the favor. Same happened with Tali. When I took Thane, Shepard caught him but a romanced Garrus pulled her up.

Skinny? Girl's got thighs. Ever seen those workplace PSA to lift heavy objects with the legs? XD Besides, quarians are basically cyborgs. She'd have probably been even more swole at deadlifts had she kept the mechanical arm from ME1.

She's also always the one to catch Shep when the elevator collapses on the Dreadnought if alive.

Nothing comes close in weirdness to Femshep catching Grunt's 300 kilo arse from falling off the platform with one arm if you bring him to fight the Terminator. Then again, she beats the crap out of a yahg in a fistfight, too.

I wouldn't say Quarians are cyborgs, in fact a argument could be made that they are after the volus the physically weakest species in the Mass Effect Universe, Those enviro-suits they wear are keeping them alive.
