Nearly 50 hours in, there's a serious lack of armor variety.

I'm playing as a dwarven warrior, and boy did we get the short end of the stick.  Most decent armor says "human only, lol!".  So I get stuck with the same 3 armor models for the whole game.  Most look like scalemail with leather pauldrons.  I want something that looks like Origins's heavy plate, or Cailan's without the gold.  Right now I'm stuck with recolored Grey Warden armor, which feels kinda weird, since I'm not a Warden.  I give DA2 a lot of flack in general, and I dislike its unshiny armor, but at least it had basic heavy plate.

Race restricted armor is also a terrible and frustrating idea in a game with more playable races than ever before in DA.

If you can manage to find the Carta Coat schematic and the Legion of the Dead schematic, that will provide some great dwarf-specific armors, but they're rare random drops, so it may involve farming.

Actually, I love the idea of racial armors because it adds to the visual diversity, but I don't like the fact that the some races have loads and others have none. I also don't like the fact some of them are guaranteed drops and you have to pray to RNG for others. If it were up to me, I'd give each Inquisitor their own race's schematics gratis, like the DLC schematics, as part of their cultural heritage, and make upgrades available through the Special Shipments chest.

There's really not much heavy plate in the game for the Inquisitor.

If you can find some decent arms then they can help make the customisable armor feel reasonably heavy, though its still not plate.

If you have the Trespasser DLC then you can get Griffon Plate, though its schematic is hidden in a stupidly obscure operation thats dependant on a particular judgement.

I remember seeing something... maybe a chevalier set or something, which looked good, but it was human only. The Free Army armor looked good too, kinda like the Kirkwall City Guard armor. It has this ghastly yellow color, but you can always dye that. But again... human only!

The human only armour looks good but tends to have pretty mediocre stats, anyway.

Hmmm, if you buy the Battlemaster Armor schematic from the black emporium and then stick the Superior Vanguard Mail Arms you can get in
Spoiler

you can get pretty heavily armoured looking, though still not full plate.

I think that'd be about the heaviest you can go without DLC for a non-human inquisitor other than the legion of the dead armour that you can pick up
Spoiler

There is also the Inquisition Foot Soldier armour you can buy in Haven, but you really don't want to be wearing that for very long.

I remember finding the Legion of the Dead armor and wanting to give it to Varric only to find out that it was for warriors only.

Well, it does get better...

Here's the basic look of the LotD Armor:

Spoiler

And here's one of my favorites from all the DLC:

Spoiler

(I know Varric can't really wear Heavy Armor, but he can model it so you know what it would look like on a Dwarf!)

And of course, between selecting different components, adding Arms and Legs, and using the Tinting Table you can customize the look quite a bit further.

Actually LotD armor schematic is not random drop. It has two fixed locations (one in vanilla game and one added with The Descent DLC).

You can buy Carta Coat schematic in Black Emporium.

Fortunately we have materials that remove class restriction  ^_^

IF they're going to have these race restrictions on armor, then the least they could do is produce more armor models. I wonder if there are armor mods for PC... Anyway, I'm going to look into that Battlemaster armor for now.

If you are on the PC, and open to using mods, there is a mod that will give you schematics for the MP characters' armor sets. This includes the Legionaire, who has some very nice looking armor (again, it is race specific, but will add more armor choices for your Dwarf). The mod also includes other armor schematics, that are not normally available as schematics.

(scroll through the images on that page, and you will see two of the dwarf heavy armors pictured. ;) )

Enjoy!

I'm on PS4, unfortunately. But I will buy the PC version eventually... whenever I decide to buy a new computer. And a good video card for that new computer.

I'll need the PC version for those long hair mods, and the "hide all spiders" mod.

Any platform that allows you to play the game is good, but yeah, mods are great.

I just decided to use my bloodstone red Warden Armor for the entire game. With my 112 defense. I was going to use the Battlemaster armor, but since you can't dye the leather, it just sticks out like a sore thumb with that awful tan color.

Yeah, the lack of armor variety in Inquisition is disappointing. I get the feeling that those armor and weapon packs they sell on Origin were supposed to be in the game from the start but then they decided not to implement them so they can sell them as dlc to get more moneys $$$

My Qunari was stuck with the same leather trenchcoat (just slight variations) the entire game and not even a helmet to hide his shameful excuse for hair >.<

I feel the same.. i am also a dwarven warrior.. and i looked exactly the same from 4-11 then agai from 11- 18 and then again from 18-28..

And the annoying thing is whenever i equip my companions with anything they do change quite a bit..

This might be DAI's biggest flaw.  For me, anyway.

DAI's biggest flaw is that we can't fix this deficiency with mods.

If the game were moddable, we could have all the armour variety we want.

I dunno about that. Why wouldn't they have just planned all along to do item packs? It's not like they suddenly realized halfway through development that Bioware is a business and needs to make money.

Legion of the dead armor should be a scripted drop in one of the tombs of the hissing wastes, if not farm the cradle of sulivin and other dungeons then save in the golden nug.

There is too many issues with the lack of armor variety, especially since the three main armor variants are cloned across the three classes and douped across all tiers multiple times.

On the left, The Flames of the Inquisition armor promotional image, as seen on Dragon Age Wiki. On the right, the actual armor, also from the wiki.

The left actually looks like armor that I would want to have. The right... doesn't look much like steel to me.

I wish I could have Krem's armor (assuming it's free of race restrictions).  My Hawke wore something like that.

I think Krem wears the "Free Army Armor". I know I had it on my character at one point.
