Is it just the "poor mans Venom" or is there more to it than that?

I unlocked it 18 months ago, used it once, then never used it again. Consider the source, most definitely, but as far as I can tell it fires blueberry muffins.

I used it a lot when I started out, but yeah with Venom it's mostly a straight downgrade. I still take it when I feel lazy and don't want to bother with ramp-up mechanics. RoF Battlesuit soldier (Devastator?) with double missiles is quite fun, because of all the staggers dealt. It's a bit better in in lobbing stuff around corners.

It has a bigger magazine, and is a bit lighter than the Venom, but that's it. I forgot it for the longest time, but lately decided to try and find a good match for it, for variety's sake.
The GE is a good match, with the increased RoF and all, and it applies ammo effects really well. I like to spam powers with this kit, so the lower cooldowns compared to the Venom are appealing to me.
However, my most pleasant discovery was putting it on the Smashguard. I spec smash for increased damage on tech detonations, charge for bonus power, then equip disruptor ammo. Charge, shoot to prime, smash. If charge's cooldown does kick in (and it will, especially when you just charged double dragoons
), the falcon will stagger mooks while you decide your next move. Surprisingly effective at increasing your damage output and you survivability at the same time
Of course the Venom can do the same for you, but I found the cooldowns to be a bit too long for my taste.
My experience comes from gold matches though! I almost never venture to platinum, so your mileage might vary there ![]()

There's no real reason to use it with a maxed manisfest, besides variety. It staggers and applies well ammo, but does only very little damage. So it's OK for gold on characters who can chain combos or have high direct damage powers, but I would not take it for a platinum PUG game.

Xcal made a video of drell adept with falcon and cryo rounds long ago (https://youtu.be/6cpszuUCziU)
After watching that video it became one of my favorite ways to roll with drell adept and batarian slasher. Pulling/lashing iced enemies never gets old, and the sound of icy explosions is just ![]()
Edit: And if you use venom as much as I did you'll constantly run out of shotgun amps. This way you can use some ar amps instead and hope to get some shotgun amps saved meanwhile.

Besides always being out of shotgun amps you mean?
AR amps I have a ton of, but I guess then it's far from the Venom when it comes to sending platinum goons back to hell....

It will just take a few many more shots.

The Falcon doesn't compare to the Venom in damage output. But it can be quite fun on the Volus Merc, for example, with Cryo IV, since it allows relatively fast cooldowns compared to the Venom. Because you can freeze or slow everything, and leave your Drone to finish off the frozen mooks. It's not a high scoring kit, but a very different style from many, and something of a laugh.

Volus merc and engineer are good examples too. With engy, you use the Falcons to keep mooks in that RM radius - indefinitely:)

I like it as a 'third power' on my HSent. Such a handy tool to lock your warp target into place and prime them for a zap combo.
Falcon looks pretty nice holding an Omniblade too. Just sayin'. A zap ammo Falcon Drellgod with melee boosts can be a hoot.

I've seen xcal vids with the GE, Drelldept, Slayer, etc with the Falcon, so that might be a good place to start...
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Disruptor Falcon on the GE. As a matter of fact, it's practically the only gun I run on him. You get Falcon stagger, Disruptor stagger, Overload stagger, TB stagger...lots of stagger potential, and he makes lolphantoms a breeze. Love this gun!

Used it to do my first solo gold vs cerbreus; batarian soldier melee build with cryo ammo. You can call me a masochist but it's extremely effective and fun to chase down poor cerb guys and shatter them into little pieces. Guns main purpose is to stunlock and close in distance for melee. If nothing else, a few solo rounds with this build can teach you the stunlock sequence and dynamics of melee fighting vs Phantoms and Dragoons very well. The only issue with it was that it took forever to take down an Atlas. I still think it has a place for melee only or power builds that "don't need" a gun but have some weight to spare for utility Falcon can offer you, as example on Batarian Soldier it works well if you just want to punch all the things. Hmm... Falcon punch... It has to be a coincidence... right?

Very good defence, mediocre offence. Works well with priming ammo and fast (area) detonators. Cryo ammo can be fun on it too, but the damage becomes quite low for Plat. I'd use it on Overload, Incinerate or Throw characters.

First off, its usage is different from Venom. Venom has enough damage to take care of most enemies on its own; Falcon doesn't. So, you'll have to rely on combo explosions more than direct weapon damage.
Falcon is best used on classes who don't rely on weapons as the primary source of damage. Disruptor ammo falcon on most engineers is pretty good. I particularly like it on HE and SE. Otherwise, you can use it on biotic classes to make sure your projectile powers hit the mooks. Phasic Falcon on a pull/singularity character is another option, mostly for the lolz.
Another option is to equip the AR omni-blade and use it on melee classes. I use it on the Paladin and DV.

The falcon has a lot of versatility with the combination of weight and stagger. It can endlessly stagger many enemies if you back off the fire rate just slightly from it's max rate. It allows for ease of grouping enemies together in bottlenecks for high AoE damage on Tech/Biotic combos. It can also serve as a nice 2nd weapon for Infiltrators or Soldiers that are not reliant on weight conscious builds. I also really enjoy it on the HS and BF3 soldier for easy combos with Concussive shot or Carnage/frags.
This is a good example of grouping enemies. This was from a plat solo a long while back.

Just realized I've yet to fire a single shot with this gun,
Is it just the "poor mans Venom" or is there more to it than that?
Crimson Blood would throw disruptor rounds on this and his GI and just wreck things singlehandliy

So true. So extremely true.
Gotta wait for that stagger window to reset. It's not like you're using the Falcon for massive spike damage anyway. It's an honorary power...a handy utility.
It just feels like the Falcon is better at this than the Venom or Acolyte. More precise control of stagger applications, I suppose.
