For all the vitriol about the "chosen one" trope, can somebody name an rpg they actually liked that didn't use it? Not sarcasm. I'm genuinely trying to find some clarity on all the dissatisfaction.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

Witcher 1 and 2

Dragon age 2

Planescape: Torment it's probably most personal story in any game. It will spoil all game including end

Spoiler

I should also add that the graphics are top notch for a console game. And gameplay is as fluid as ever.

Nice, thank you.

Halo 5: Guardians isn't terrible. It's just disappointing and a step backwards from Halo 4. While the plot and antagonist of Halo 4 weren't great, where the game excelled was character development and an emotional connection. Halo 5: Guardians discards everything Halo 4 did by stringing together an incoherent man hunt that is poorly explained and even makes less sense. Suffice it to say, not a lot happens and the story for the game was dramatically over-hyped and disappointing as a result. There really is no story, which is Halo 5: Guardians' biggest drawback. I didn't dabble with the multiplayer, but it's likely solid. I'm not a fan of the new warzone game type replacing big team battle, but I'm sure it's still decent.

I haven't played any of the halo games at all so I have no idea how they are, I just saw the trailers for halo 5 and thought it looked awesome. But it's hard to tell sometimes and it's still money wasted if I end up not liking it. I guess it's always a gamble though.

If I were you I'd probably consider picking up the Halo Master Chief Collection before buying Halo 5: Guardians. Halo MCC comes with the Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4. You get the four games for the price of one as well as all of their maps and multiplayer modes. Halo MCC had a rough launch due to the project being too ambitious, but 343 largely ironed out most of the issues it had at release. If you like Halo MCC, then you should get Halo 5: Guardians. Otherwise, you aren't going to understand what's going on at all in the story since you don't know any of the characters.

Play Reach first.

Reach isn't necessary. While it's the prequel to Combat Evolved, it in no way is required to understand the story and doesn't have any of the major players, besides Halsey, who isn't even relevant until Halo 4 anyway. It would make far more sense to play Combat Evolved and be introduced to Master Chief and Cortana for the first time.

I'll get that box I think. Sounds fairly cheap, so I won't be wasting much money in case I don't like it plus I get to play the former ones.

Thanks all of you. It's good advice xD

No problem! I don't actually think you'd even be able to play Halo: Reach, unless it's backwards compatible. It's an Xbox 360 game. Halo MCC was made for Xbox One, so the original four games definitely work and are optimized for the system.

I still haven't forgiven Halo 5 for removing split screen multiplayer, all for the sake of the "glorious" Frames Per Second.   <_<

I don't suppose anyone has mentioned that with less than a year to go on a three year plus development cycle, this ship has already sailed (as far as convincing them to re-write it now.)

Fyi: they added a Big Team Battle playlist post launch (been up for a couple months now). I'm not a fan of warzone either. Big team is as good as ever though.

those frames per second are quite glorious when the frame rate doesn't stutter during online mayhem. But good news, they're adding a Firefight playlist (which I would hope includes split screen considering its a PvE gametype.)

It's the principle of the thing though, split screen is one of the staples of the franchise; something that has been a part of the series since Halo: Combat Evolved; and they just remove it.

It would be like the new Mass Effect shipping without a character creator and then BioWare saying that they arbitrarily removed it because it would help with performance issues.  <_<

On top of that, the micro-transaction heavy/pay2win warzone game mode and the fact that I have lost practically all interest and enthusiasm for the setting means I likely won't ever purchase another Halo game again; outside maybe Halo Wars 2.  ;)

I would love for ME:A to be an ordinary soldier that just happens to stumble into something that s/he can't control.  I want to be seen as hopeless and as helpless, and that any decision I make has serious ramifications. But as long as I'm not another "Shepard."

And don't forget the Warden. What a lovely time that was having to shoot at that bullet sponge seven or eight times throughout the game.

It's the least technically impressive Halo to date really. Both Halo 3 and Reach were far more impressive with their scale and incredible AI. It looks okay for a 60fps console game, but many corners were cut to keep that frame rate. It never hits 1080p and shadows will literally disappear and reappear as you walk up to and back away from them. Battlefront is a much better looking game, runs at the same frame rate, and is locked at 900p. I think 343i dropped the ball on the technical level with Halo 5.

Spoiler

If you have an Xbox One I highly recommend the Master Chief Collection. It is Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4, all running at 1080p/60fps. They look great and play better than the original releases. The only downside is that it doesn't include Reach and ODST costs 5 bucks on the marketplace if you want that one. It was actually my favorite, so you might want to check that one out too considering the price.

Didn't they more or less rewrite ME3 on short notice ^^ Ah, bad idea...I guess the point of these threads is mainly to pass time and maybe affect future games at least ^^

Andrew ... LUCAS??? Yeah, balance and the force and all that stupidity...I'd rather see the Galaxy-Destroyer-Starbase next than have that criap again

Well, given the various responses on this thread, I think I'm possibly one of the few people who really enjoyed DA2! It needed a bit more love sure, but I felt the premise was sound, and really liked the fact that Hawke wasn't The Chosen One, per se, but more 'right place, right time'.  It was a change to the usual 'only you can save the world!' stuff prevalent in most RPGs.

Whilst the ship has sailed in terms of being able to influence things, I'd kind of hope that our protagonist is more concerned with the exploration side of things, hunting for clues and such within ancient ruins and so on.  You may be a Pathfinder, and probably in charge of the explorers, but ultimately you are but one cog in a machine struggling to survive in the harsh new galaxy.  There is no galaxy-wide threat, but merely a threat to the MW colonists that the Pathfinders are tasked with deciphering and trying to resolve.  Combat is something that happens because you either upset the locals or come across the soldiers of this threat who also want the clues/tech for themselves.  I'd prefer a more cerebral approach to this game, as opposed to just shooting things in the face.  Conversations open up depending upon how much information you've discovered and your 'influence' level with your companions.

But, maybe I'm alone in this thought...

Tim

Given that the main draw of BW games(besides brief corny "romances") is juvenile power trips involving fighting big bad ancient evil, not expecting galaxy wide threats or chosen one cliches is almost akin to not expecting the sun to rise from the east tomorrow.

I care less about "The Chosen One" cliche than I do about the galaxy wide threat...

If this story is about anything more than the attempt by a puny number of refugees to forge some home at the fringes of the Andromeda galaxy while the galaxy itself only barely notices them... I'm going to whine a lot about it after release.

Anything more the "establishment" will be really immersion breaking for me.

Originality is overrated, that's true.  It's the execution that counts.

That being said, I'd like to play something other than Space Jesus with gun.
