I've played the main game before so i'm aware that after the game ends you can no longer really talk to your companions but this will be the first time that i'll be playing any of the DLCs and i had a question about something. I was considering playing the first two DLCs before the final mission of the main game. If i do that will my companions have more to say then if i were to play them after the main games final mission where new conversations usually cease? Or does it not matter in that regard? And when i say more to say i mean around Skyhold, not while out on the mission.

For example, if i played Jaws before the final main game mission and then walked up to Cassandra would she have anything new to say that she wouldn't say if i were to play Jaws after the main games final mission?

The dlcs don't add new dialogue to Skyhold as far as I'm aware.

I did JoH after Cory and only got the regular chat with folks before they wouldn't talk to me again.

***EDIT - Just realised that wasn't what you were asking. Woops.  No one mentioned The Descent at all that I can remember, and JoH I played after Cory so I wouldn't know if it triggered any extra dialogue.  I'd guess no but can't confirm it.***

I have some advice that I am definitely gonna follow myself next time, I'll share if you like.

The Descent, start early.  Gives you the option to go back.  It may ruin immersion not to do the whole thing in one go but it's 5 hours and omg I got bored.  Really bored.  If I ever do it again, which I may not, I'll do it bit by bit as there are camps you can fast travel too.  Will make it much less of a slog.

JoH I would absolutely do before the end.  Reasons?  Well, Trespasser is, to me, the true end of the game.  Waiting around for 6 hours doing JoH....blimey I was like a toddler that needed a wee.  I was desperate to go to Trespasser but here I was running around Skyrim instead.   <_<

So I'd do that in bits as well, as you would other zones.  No need to take it in one shot.  Then you can kill Cory, chat to folks in Skyhold, and go straight to Trespasser.  Bear in mind that everything else needs to be finished before you start Trespasser.

Hope that helps.   :)

It doesn't matter when you play them, there's no new dialogue in Skyhold. There's some bits of banter during the DLC but you get this whether you choose to play before or after the end.

I like playing all the DLC after the ending - there's a 2 year gap before Trespasser, so I like to know what my character got unto in that time.

I get that, it makes sense to fill up the 2 year gap.  Only it was my first run and I just couldn't wait to know what happened next.  I've got no patience
