Technically, Arrival wasn't Shepard's fault either; it was Hackett's. Benefits of rank, I suppose.

No, Shepard pushed the button that sent the asteroid crashing into the Alpha Relay. All Hackett did was have Shepard go get Dr. Kenson. But this is offtopic.

I'd have liked to be able to hold a grudge against Hackett for that.

Heck i'd like to be able to carry forward the character i'd roleplayed for 2 games rather than the compliant squib that's overjoyed to have been locked up for 6 months by the alliance & who's mouth utters words such as 'this isn't about strategy or tactics'. Personally if i could forget about and skip that utterly horrid intro i would. Such a shame a tribunal could have been cool and given opportunities for player's to be meek or angry.

Yes, we needed pro-Cerberus (or at least anti-Alliance) options so bad, at least for the start of the game.  Why the hell my renegades are happy to be locked up for 6 months while the galaxy is ending is beyond me.

It's hard to really wag a finger at Hackett for that though, because ultimately, it had to be done and failure would have resulted in everyone dying. Those batarians were a pretty small price to pay by comparison.

As for Shepard being locked up, obviously she isn't glad to do it, but the story fixes the character here to establish that everyone is trying to avoid the Alliance going to war with the batarians, which, even if the batarians may likely commit suicide to do so, would be a waste of time that takes resources away from what could be going towards dealing with the imminent reaper invasion.

Yeah it was especially disappointing as beforehand Casey Hudson said it was possible to roleplay anti alliance

I'm not sure what game he was referring to but it clearly wasn't me3.

I wasn't around during all this hubbub prior to ME3's release. Curious that they'd suggest that you could play an anti-Alliance character in ME3. I wonder if there's any hidden/cut dialogue to this effect.

Maybe they just meant that you could walk around with armor brandishing their logo, because it wouldn't be suspicious at all.

Clearly there was a third clone on a grassy knoll who did for the player characterised Shep.

Killed Neutral shep too. What makes a good man go neutral anyway? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality

I'd like to see less mechanics. What I mean is that I want the relationship building aspect of this game (including non-romance) to be more organic and less "if you do this mission for me, the I will like you/sleep with you".  Relationships are more complex than that.  How characters feel about you should be affected by your choices, your tone (e.g. sarcastic), how much time you spend with them, etc and the strength of the relationship and how the NPC acts towards you should be on a spectrum.

E.g. Conversations delving into personal aspects of an NPCs life or history should be locked away until they feel comfortable around you.  That comfort level (don't think of a "comfort meter") should be based on how many times you take them with you, how often you go out of your way to chat them up, your generally tone when you speak to them, "loyalty missions", etc.  Maybe a kind word at an opportune moment would unlock a conversation that would have normally been locked away because you've been a general jerk to them until now.

It shouldn't be too predictable.  You should have to use a little intuition to "solve the puzzle".  Kinda like in life.

It's a fair guess that breaking regulations is probably not much of a possibility in the game, mainly because Mass Effect isn't going to turn into Brig Simulator 2016/7, save for any special circumstances, like when Anderson helps Shepard take the Normandy despite being held on lockdown. Of course, this is putting aside the fact that our character will be out in the wilds left to their own devices most of the time. I doubt there would be much room for oversight when exploring the hostile outback of Andromeda.

Maybe its just their choice of song(Johnny Cash) but i'm hoping for a wild west/frontier vibe where rules/regulations don't really survive coming face to face hostile native environment. Equally i hope there's less structure & more freedom to the pathfinders role.

I like that.  Poor Shep, her death would have been driving him on, not caring if he died because he'd already lost the woman he loved.  The drama! I had no romance in ME1 in my Tali run and I didn't miss it at all.  But I am soppy so give me a LI option in ME2 and 3 and I'll take it.

I can imagine the options are pretty bad for you as femShep, at least Garrus can be your bro, but other than that they pretty much suck if you're not a Liara fan.  I hope to goodness they give femRyder some better options this time round.

Btw, a straight male gamer mainly playing femShep?  Well Sir, you're now one of my favourite ppl.   :D

The amount of guys who can't play girls and seem to think a male protagonist is the only option gets old real quick.

Don't give me credit where it isn't due, it isn't enlightenment it is purely selfish. i play voiced RPGs based on voice acting. when Me first appeared i didn't even consider a non maleshep run. But I hear this quiet distance rumblings on the internet at how great Hale's performance was  and I got busy so put the game down for a month and the distance rumblings were closer and louder so i thought is this real or is it gender bias? So I stopped my maleshep first playthrough and started with Femshep game and I was amazed at how much better it was (in my opinion.) I though Meer was great but Hale seemed to have made that role her own. When i think Shepard I automatically think Femshep now because of her acting.

Now I have a policy of playing the prologue of a game with each voice actor to find which one i like the best. And that voice actor becomes my "main" gender for most of my games. Its all based on a selfish desire to experience the best acting for the story.

I really don't worry too much about choice of Romance options so long as there is an option. We all like different things so Liara not being to my liking is the luck of the draw. people like mutually exclusive things romantically so Bioware can't create romance options that can be all things to all people. Which means at some point one of their games is going to be a "barren" wasteland for romantic choice for everyone. We just have to be mature about it an accept it might happen to all of us at one point.

So far, most Bioware romance narrative arcs are stationary, barely without any conflict, only exist as added fluff to the main narrative. With more romance choices to appeal to players with very specific orientation in mind, it simply didn't allow the narrative to extend further other than some cute scenes except for the narrative focus on a singular romanceable character... like Bastila in KOTOR, Morrigan in DAO, Anders in DAII, Solas in DAI... in ME, Liara was rather irrelevant except for the revelation of Ilos in the first game and then she received narrative patches in subsequent installments to expand her role further that made her the primary LI, but her importance diminished in the middle of the narrative, like dev didn't intend her to be significant in the end of the game. Compared to Bastila/Morrigan/Anders/Solas, you're still dealing with the consequence of their actions and the added romantic elements didn't necessarily make it fluff, just.. more dramatic. Would you kill your lover if its the right thing? I still like DAII just because of this... very.. painful....

My main reason for rolling a female PC was because I simply prefer to look at a female protagonist for hours on end over a male, but Hale sold me to become my official Shep (and probably BioWare's at this point, given the narration of their teaser trailer). I can't imagine anyone but Hale mischievously laughing when tricking that poor slob that there's a bomb on the Citadel in ME2.

Noted, credit duly removed.  :P

I prefer Meer for my more 'professional dispassionate soldier' types, and Hale for my more passionate Sheps.  Meer grows on you at least, at first I thought he sounded like a robot but now I'm quite fond of him.

Have to say that's the most reasonable assessments of both the sex of your character, and your romance preferences, that I've read so far on BSN.  For goodness sake stop it and start screaming that your unique sexual preferences aren't being adequately met, it's the end of the world, and Bioware are literally Hitler.

I like that idea, playing for a while and seeing which voice fits.  I've found judging on the first ten minutes is totally unreliable, it takes times to get a feel for the voice and see if it really represents your character.  Might try that with DA:I, just casually running around for a while and see what suits.....

More LI's that dump you for someone else, and not just joke ones no one cares about like Jacob.

Imagine if Kai Lame still had amazing plot armor and beat you in a fight, but then also took your boyfriend/girlfriend and gloated about it via email.

The nerdrage would have been epic.

Kai Lame shall never take Ashley/Liara/Jack/Miranda/Kaidan from my Shepard's arms, he'll be given a taste of his omni-blade if he even tries.
