It's a lot better in ME3. Probably the best ME3 romance, in my opinion.Yay! Very happy to hear that. Romancing Garrus in ME2 is perhaps my favourite Bioware romance ever.
Love it so much I'm kinda scared to do ME3 with that femShep. I keep putting it off
What romance mechanics would you like in the new Mass Effect?

So you want it to be mandatory? What about players who like the romance stories but for a variety of reasons don't want sex to be a part of it?
More dialogue options are always welcome, but I also prefer that some options don't always work for certain companions to spice things up. Take Isabela for example. As a character defined as a very sexual person, sex is absolutely integral to her relationship, thus denying sex breaks the deal.

I'd like a sex scene because I like to watch my fave char getting it on but I wouldn't be salty if there is no such scene as long as the rest of the romance is good. There'll always be fanfiction >:3

Nearly impossible QTEs during romance scenes that result in the protagonist being awkward and clumsy and generally making a fool of himself/herself if the player fails. The LI is unsatisfied and subsequently dumps the player character.
Popcorn, anyone? The aftermath on the forums would be hilarious at least.

Sex is a pretty core part of most adult relationships, that sits along side emotional attachment. Optional or ambiguity removes the chance to integrate that into the wider romance arc because it is suddenly no longer a definite aspect. You can't have any sort of reference, no innuendo or sultry comments between lovers etc. If you did that to the Isabela romance in DA2 you'd cripple it imo.
I believe a bit of optional dialogue in the Solas romance suggests this might not necessarily be the case;
Inquisitor: "You're being grim and fatalistic in hope of getting me into bed, aren't you?"
Solas: "I am grim and fatalistic. Getting you into bed is just an enjoyable side benefit."
To the degree of the Isabela romance? Perhaps not but that is an argument I consider more to be about why the optional sexual component should not be applied to all romances lest it do what the obligatory component might do in terms of interfering with characterization.
As you've mentioned, sex is considered a core part of most adult relationships alongside emotional attachment. Most but not all which is why I do not see the problem in having some romances with sexual component and some romances without an obligatory sexual component. This could allow for the sexual component to be integrated into the romance arcs where it might matter and leave it out of the romance arcs where it would make no sense for it to be central element.
This could allow for more meaningful arcs because they would not need to adhere to a set arc and allow for explorations of things that would otherwise not be possible.
To create an example of a romance with non-sexual component; Why not have a romance in which the two parties involved are not sexual compatible in any way and their means of expressing emotional intimacy has to be demonstrated and explored in a different way. Let's take the Prothean's way of conveying thoughts, imagery and experience through sensory touch and apply that to showcase emotional intimacy. Perhaps this is how the alien can communicate their affections: their emotions are expressed in colors, through sharing said emotions or through a set of melodic sounds that they show the player character through the touch. It could be an alien romance that truely has an alien component and that is allowed to truely be explored.

Meh, I'll be pretty jealous if the option I picked turn out to be non sexual by nature, make it optional during the dialogue for all, then it's solved. It's not about seeing people getting it on either since I'm good with fade to black, it's mostly about knowing that it happens. You can choose to have sex or just skip it but still maintain the relationship seems to be the perfect solution anyway.

I would also like to be able to end the relationship after taking them for a test drive. What if I didn't like the baby making scene? I think I deserve to try again with a more appropriate mate.

I've played with a Tali romance once before, and I have to say her romance didn't capture me as much as it had in ME2. It'll be Miranda and Ash this time round, and I'll save Garrus to lighten up either my third or fourth run. Keep the awesome for when I really need it!
Miranda and Ash are some of my favorites as well, but they have a bit less romance content in ME3 compared to the previous games. Garrus just keeps on getting better while you go through the series, though. He's like a fine wine ![]()

I think instead of quantity, they should focus on quality, I'm fine with less romance but it would be cool if they integrate it more into the game. It would explain why certain romance is lacking due to the sheer amount of romances they have in ME3.

A gay toggle that trolls anyone who clicks 'No Gays' by locking their character into an explicit gay sex scene, complete with "It's Raining Men" as the soundtrack backdrop.
(Because let's face it...it's only insecure doodz who keep asking for the gay toggle)

Butt-slapping mini-game.
If you press a button, something awesome has to happen.
I would like groping to actually be a thing given prompt, I mean I don't know about other folks but I occasionally want to just give certain attributes a squeeze even if it doesn't lead to the bedroom.

I would definitely like each romance to have some dates that you can go out with them on. Maybe each date could signify progress in the relationship, like a friendlier date at the beginning of the relationship and a more romantic one further into the relationship.

I never said make it for every romance. I just said I would like to have romances, as in some not all, where it isn't mandatory.

Booty calls are fine but ultimately pointless for me I did the Cassandra thing in the loft maybe twice. It was nice, her overall romance though was great if you factor in friendly conversations and others. Her argument with Varric stands out, I felt I understood this character.
Not a fan of realism a little cheese please and as op said some consequences, being betrayed by a love interest or a jealous rejected party would be brilliant.

Or the Extended Cut scene where he's like "Forget about me. Go build your home on Rannoch." and Tali is like "I already have a home."
Ah, Tali...
Shep, you clueless, distant moron...
That scene in the EC still gives me feels.
"Please, don't leave me..."
And you know he's not coming back.
Brilliant VA.
Exactly what I want from Andromeda, its cliche but its powerful having gone through everything with her there. Depth without endless dialogue.

Whatever they do, I hope they don't follow the crap job they did with the gay romance in the last game, basically copy and paste Kaidan from Femshep and cutting out a bunch of scenes and contents then relegate the NPC option as the gay option. Waited for 3 games, and I was a bit letdown. I just hope they do more than just throwing us a bone this time.
At least you got options. Not everyone can say the same. Be thankful for what you have.

As has been stated what's missing is depth. They went in that direction with Liara but didn't quite make it.

The thing I liked about Cassandra's romance was the leading up to it. I was amused how you would go up to her and have conversations then flirt and she'd be like a brick wall until a certain point she gets all flustered tells you it can't happen then straight after says yes I want it.
I never completed it though cause after you boink her there isn't much content besides I hated having to play a certain character for her just didn't feel right.
