Would you be open to the idea of a Mass Effect solo adventure?

That still is not same thing, if it's not even on Skyrim's follower level then it's no good.

But Skyrim followers don't comment on anything except spout random generic banter, but you still have not explained why comments based on your actions are only valid if they come from a character that shadows you on missions?

Anyone who thinks a solo adventure would be a great idea for an entire Mass Effect game should play the Arrival DLC.

Be careful what you wish for.

Arrival had many problems, it was lazy and uninspired and they could not do anything interesting with the gameplay because it was based on the core gameplay of the game which needs to make concessions to allow for companion characters.

A solo mission can potentially be very interesting. I am not interested, however, in an entirely solo campaign in a BioWare game. One of the biggest draws for me in BioWare's games is companion content, and that includes their input during the missions themselves.

I thought the solo portion of the Citadel DLC was a lot of fun, so I'd also be down for a mission or two. An entire game of the protagonist flying solo wouldn't work though, and Bioware would in effect be abandoning the one thing it's consistently done well.

If Ashley or Javik had been there with Shepard when facing the Catalyst, I'm sure they would have made Shepard snap out of it. Surely Mac Walters couldn't have had two companions just quietly standing there as Shepard destroys civilization on the Reaper boss' orders, would he?

People are mentioning Arrival, but we're forgetting that other time Shepard had to act alone. It wasn't Mass Effect's finest hour.

Final point: in Citadel, the evil clone dies because she has no friends no save her. Shepard survives because her friends pick her up. This is a point about this series and it symbolizes something the series stands for.

Well, when I played with broken banter for dozens of hours in DAI the experience got pretty close to a solo play already. My companions followed me in silence, and the moments where they would comment during a conversations were pretty rare as it was. Even when the banter was working, most of it isn't interactive, so they were mostly talking among themselves - but not to me - while we were adventuring.

Truth be told, I've come to think that even a pure action game like Vermintide does party banter occasionally better than DAI did it. While it certainly has less overall lines - it's just a co-op MP game after all - it really brings its characters to life because it is so context sensitive, always fitting the situation on hand. DAI banter lives from conversations outside of combat, Vermintide just lets the characters talk as you would expect companions in combat would do, by making them comment on what is happening around them.

Bardin (dwarf ranger): "Not to brag, but that was the cleanest kill I ever made."

Sienna (bright wizard): "And so modestly expressed, too."

SIenna (after another player achieves a kill streak as Sergeant Kruber): "See, Kruber? You can be fun when you want to!"

Bardin (reviving the elven waywatcher): "Did a gust of wind catch ye, elf?"

(when the skaven spring a surprise attack)

Sienna: "It's an ambush! YES!!"

Victor (witch hunter): "If we catch one alive I will be the one to interrogate it. This is not up for discussion!"

This context related banter makes you truly feel that you're fighting as a group (even if you choose to play with bots). I'd love for Bioware to implement something similar, maybe in addition to the banter conversations that are largely unaffected by the region you are in or the quest you are on.

This really seems like a L2P issue. I'm assuming you don't use your teammates for priming/detonation.

And Skadi when you going to let me take you out on a date?

A customisable lead character and multiple selectable companions who provide both different tactical and banter-based options are at the core of what BioWare does, and the reason why I replay their games so often. Why would I want them to make another Deus Ex game? Eidos are already doing that and I'm sure it will be great.

They do comments about places they are in as well. Comments are valid but is not same as followers reacting and commenting. You have NPC commentary outside followers in ME already.

If a certain mission or segment is trying to build up a creepy or scary atmosphere it would be best to make it a solo-instance.

So you want halo?

Evidently not, since Halo has you with a squad now. :P

Thats one of those crappy halo sequels. :P

Edit: Ok we'll say Destiny then. Dinklebot doesn't count, he's literally only there to hold you back.

Yeah, no. BioWare would have to seriously step there game up to pull off a game without companions. Though I guess to be fair TW3 would be a good example of a solo experience that still maintained interesting content with the buddy characters. So its not like you need permanent followers to have a bunch of character content. BioWare's companion stuff is both there greatest strength but also a crutch as well imo.

I agree a soloi mission here and there is OK i guess if it's done right. Arrival was OK but it wasn't ME at it's finest and I prefer the combat style of Bioware's games compared to the likes of Deus Ex and even the Witcher series because I prefer the team dynamic. i prefer working as a member of a team in RPG ttype games than working alone to solve the problem.

I don't see what we would gain from removing companions.

Nope, it would make it worse, the team members make the game so much better, it would become a lot more dull without them. If you don't want them through most of the game then don't recruit them, some characters you can turn away. If they made it an option for people who want to go alone can go alone and the rest can take a team then fine.

"And don't worry I am sure they could still work in your stupid ****** romance options as well." You got a bit bitchy there didn't you?

Which they already do in DA anyway I believe. I prefer to work with a team but if they put in an option whereby the player can go alone if they want to i suppose it's not too bad but it should be as an extra because one of the reasons why I love Biowares games are their characters. Without the characters woith me cauing havoc for the bad guys I don't think I'd enjoy the game half as much.

I want a team and I'd like to hear their opinions when faced with a dilemma, like when killing the rachni queen.

I think Inquisition did this well.

Both series do this well. even DAO and DA2 does too Just been playing Legacy in DA2 anjd Varric came out with something really funny after being knocked down. I think I heard it before but just didn't remember it. Something to do with his innards but the way he delivers the line was first class as it always makes me laugh every time i hear him say it.. You don't get classic moments like that without companions and that for me is why I'd prefer them to hang around in Bioware's games.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy The witcher or Deus Ex type game4s as they are good at what they do. But if i had to choose between Deus Ex  and Mass Effect ME would win every time same if I had to choose between the Witcher and Dragon Age i'd pick DA. Purely because for me the companions in the game and having them with you is just too good in Bioware's games.
