This is very much a personal choice so i'm not really looking for pointers here. More for sharing really.

Finding music for mods has taken me to some places I might not have expected. I find I prefer traditional forms of music in my mods over the stock music. though my choices for outdoor music have tended to be of typical fantasy stock.

Here I have found this to be an excellent resource:

If you can pick up anything that Tillman Sillescu has released for free then I think you will find it useful:

If any one wants them I have many TS tracks I took from Freesound before they started to charge. Tillman has worked on many major game titles and the quality of his work shine through for me.

I have also found myself drawn towards medieval music and use a lot in my mods. John Dowland in particular ....

This one I used for one of the combat sequences in "From This Come Strength"

I did ask for permission, honest I did.

But for properly free to use stuff John Sayles website is an excellent resource for renaissance music I have tapped time and again:

Lastly I have come to appreciate the Madrigal as a form of music and use them in two ecclesiastic interior areas. Surfing for resources led me to the Philippine Madrigal Singers ... unlikely, I know. However, one their facebook page they refer to being asked to check the acoustics in Mont St Micheal. The result was recorded and made it to UTube. For that I am grateful. I have no area for this but maybe one day.

Meanwhile it's back to the 70's and 80's SKA and punk that normally inhabits my ipod.

Hope this helps to inspire.

IMO symphonic music helps create a cinematic feel to a module, esp. when dealing with combat, extreme environments, and similar 'epic' content.

However I really appreciate the medieval style for non-combat background sound in particular towns, markets, etc.

I remember your use of Flow My Tears, and liked it.  :)  I have some extremely eclectic selections in mind for my next piece, which may raise some eyebrows, but I haven't decided for sure on using them.

Eclectic is good if it fits the situation and tells you something about the mood or pace or the area.

The only music I have found never can be made to fit is heavy rock music or music that has a dominant piano sound, That instrument is lovely to hear but not in a fantasy mod IMO.

Glad you found flow my tears, that was a very specific route through that quest and I was not sure any would :)

Unfortunately I haven't played From This Comes Strength, but it makes me happy to see that you used Dowland as music, since I played most of his songs on classical guitar :).

I also found that Kevin McLeod (http://incompetech.c...free/music.html) has some interesting music. The range is quite wide, so everything won't fit, but as far as I'm concerned there's really stuff to use.

Yes, what I have in mind is all about setting the mood.  Definitely not just throwing in a favourite song that doesn't have anything to do with the setting.  :)  However, at least one of them does feature piano, which leads to...

Is it because the pianoforte wasn't invented until the early 1700s?  But the NWN2 main theme has a pretty dominant piano, and so does the MotB Mulsantir theme.

I'm not sure if Devil May Cry music counts as heavy rock, but I think I recall someone used something like that for the climactic battle in a module I played some years ago, with electric guitars and all, and it did give me pause at first, but I thought it worked after all.

The piano is a great instrument and I think it works well in both those openings. Where I think it does not work is for an area. For me an area background need to settle into the background, to be heard but not to dominate. It's a subconscious affirmation of the game play to excite or relax the player as he traverses my world.

I don't have an absolute ban on the instrument but I rarely come across piano tracks which don't fill my head while I'm playing the game and make the whole experience unbalanced.
