I'm very mixed on the Renegade alignment in general. It's like there's two sides to it, but I only like one side. I dig the notion of "screw the rules, I'm pragmatic" (getting in cheap shots, making threats to force cooperation, etc.), but hate the decisions that just seem dickish (particularly the Genophage incident). I'm happy enough playing pragmatism incarnate with a handful of quips, but I don't want to play "Sith Lord but with none of the benefits that come with being a Sith Lord, like badass powers" (read: being a scumbag for the lulz).

Are you referring to sabotaging the genophage cure? How is that dickish? There are alot of valid arguments to justify it. By sabotaging it, you are guaranteeing the gain of Salarian support, and a possible (but not guaranteed) loss of Krogan support. By curing the genophage, you are guaranteeing Krogan support but are also guaranteeing the loss of Salarian support. Which of those two odds sound better? It seems like a fairly pragmatic decision to go with the former. Its not done for shits and giggles. Sabotage also eliminates the possibility of a future Krogan uprising. The game does a pretty shitty job of emphasizing that possible threat. How many hostile/racist Krogan have we met in the trilogy? Quite a few ( ie - Uvenk, Weyrloc Guld, Wreav, the two Krogan that are beside the door as you enter Tuchanka in ME2). Its not unreasonable to imagine there being other Krogans that oppose Wrex and want to deliver some revenge against the Salarians/Turians after the war. Also, Mordin makes it clear that the genophage is not equivalent to genocide in ME2. Sabotaging the cure does not guarantee that the Krogan will go extinct.

I see this decision as the action of a desperate leader (Shepard) going to extreme lengths to save his people. Salarian expertise likely played a very important role in the development of the Crucible. It most certainly is not him simply being a dick. Hell, just look at the amount of guilt Shepard shows after shooting Mordin (not to mention the number of times, he warns Mordin to back down). Those hardly sound like the actions of a scumbag. The scene only looks unforgivable if you don't bother to examine the factors that led Shepard to making that choice.
