Hello guys. Having played DAO but not DA2, I assumed whatever choice I made in the first game would be of little consequence, if any, in DAI; so I started the game with the default world state.

Right now, I'm at the point of the game where you've just become Inquisitor --awesome moment btw-- and I realize I may have underestimated the depth of the game a little bit. I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps I was a bit too rash in my decision.

I would like to know, from those of you who have finished the game or played long enough, to what extent the choices made in the past games affect the world in DAI. In my particular case, I'm more interested in the effect of DAO, as I didn't play DA2 and would of course go with the default state on that game.

To give some info about the choices I made in DAO: my warden died killing the archdemon, Alistair became king and I had a human child with Morrigan.

I'm considering creating a Dragon Age Keep profile and starting a new game but only if my past choices carry enough weight in the current game to warrant a restart. I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks!

All those choices you made will have an effect in DA:I, especially Morrigan and the Child. Aside from those, very few choices seem to matter.

Just chiming in here that this is the General Discussion (Spoilers) forum so if you don't wish to be spoiled there is the General Discussion (No Spoilers) forum. But as having played through DA:I myself, I can say that past decisions will matter in DA:I

The choices that matter the most are these:
-Is Alistair still a Grey Warden?
-Is Loghain alive?
-Did Morrigan have a baby?

Other choices that affect dialogue with some characters, codex entries and/or War Table missions in a major way:
-Who did the Warden romance?
-Is the Warden still alive?

-Is Zevran alive?

-Who rules Ferelden?

-How did the Warden deal with the Urn Of Sacred Ashes?

-Is Connor alive?

Choices that lead to minor changes in dialogue:
-Did the Warden help Dagna become a scholar at the Circle Tower?
-Who rules Orzammar?

-How did you deal with Morrigan at the end of the Witch Hunt DLC?
-What happened to Leliana?

-What were the Warden's origins?

-Who is the OGB's father (if you did the Dark Ritual)?

The Keep presents the 'illusion of choice', like seriously you could cut out more than half of those questions/choices and it wouldn't affect the game at all. The only ones that do are obvious major ones; Warden ultimate sacrifice or dark ritual, Loghain dead or alive, King Alistair or Queen Anora, Hawke Mage/Warrior/Rogue, Carver or Bethany, Anders dead or alive, etc.

Let us not forget: Did you kill or let the Architect live?

Developers have already confirmed that the Architect was not forgotten

The other guys covered it but I would add this....if you end up really enjoying this character and they make a DA4, wouldn't you want your canon Inquisitor to belong to your canon DA:O world, which you can then take into DA4?

Personally I would so I'd restart, but you could say to hell with it and just have fun with this playthrough.  Then perhaps load your old world into the Keep and start DA:I again,  with different DA2 choices, and it'll be a chance to re-do different things as you'll know the story by then.

Just a thought.   :)

EDIT - Btw, there may be a lot of criticism to DA2 but I for one enjoyed it.  It's almost a prologue for DA:I, so many things in the game carry more weight if you played 2 so perhaps you might consider giving it a try (especially if you're enjoying Inquisition).

Hey there. Glad you enjoying the Dragon Age series.

Contrary to the very popular belief around here, the reason the Dragon Age Keep exists is to provide your consecutive play-throughs with consistency in the setting, not to make future games be extended epilogues. The choices presented in the Keep are not indicative of what will be shown in future installments. The choices matter, but their impacts are still mostly contained in their respective stories... like 99.999999% of games out there.

Many of the choices in the keep are not used. Some are used intangibly such as in the war table or in ambient lore. Others appear very briefly in dialogue or in side quests. Few have a significant tangible impact on the main story.

The point of the Keep is to at least have the option of respecting the player decision should the relevant scenario in question be used. Being assured that your choices will at the very least be respected or addressed should they come up is what the Keep is all about.

While BioWare is still in control of the narrative, much of the setting is fundamentally yours.

If you do not care about the consistency of the setting, then you can use the default without much impact on your experience because the story would essentially be a blank slate to you. DAO choices appear to be more significant than those in DA2's in DAI. If you care about those choices, then I suggest you create a world state. It's worth it.  In fact, two of  the choices you listed are ones that have the most impact. You'll feel the story continuing across three games.

I also suggest you play DA2 at least once before playing DAI, if only to have some context for many things in the game.

This is actually pretty close to the default, isn't it? US Warden and King Alistair. Though IIRC the default Warden is female.

These decisions have a potential impact on DAI, ranging from significant to purely superficial:

-The gender and origin of the Warden, and the gender, personality and class of Hawke
-The outcome of the Dark Ritual
-Whether you spared or killed Loghain
-Who was made ruler of Ferelden
-Who was made King of Orzammar
-Your relationship with Leliana and if she died in DAO
-Your relationship with Alistair or Morrigan
-Whether Connor lives or dies
-Whether or not you helped Dagna
-Whether or not Zevran survived DAO
-Whether you aided the mages or Templars at the end of DA2
-Whether you sided with Larius or Janeka
-The fates of Hawke's companions and sibling, and who your LI was
-Whether or not you let Varric kill Bartrand, and whether you let him keep the red lyrium shard
-Whether or not The Arishok lived

DAI can be considered also a self contained game, the previous choices are mostly irrelevant and don't alter the experience of the game way too much.
As it should be since new players should not be penalized just because they didn't played the others two chapters.

Your choices would add color to your DAI experience and I'd highly suggest importing your custom world state if you intend to play again.  There are wonderful little tidbits that give a nice nod to previous games and the choices you made.

Thank you guys for all your answers. :)

Based on what you've told me I've decided to start a new game. And while I wont be playing DA2 right now, just because I don't want to postpone my DAI playthrough any longer, I will watch some youtube videos summarizing the occurrences in the second game; this way at least I can make an informed decision when filling out the Keep options.

Again thank you for your help and I hope this thread serves as future reference for others with the same reservation I had.

Whenever you play DA2 be sure to get the Legacy DLC as it bears directly on the events of DAI.

To expand on the idea of a "blank slate," pretty much all irrelevant information, side quests, romances, companion quests, non-essential followers, are left as incomplete or "did not <recruit, save, etc>" in all of the default world states. Choosing to use the default world state is really as bare-bones as you're going to get.

Don't bother restarting your game. Morrigan's human child (non-old god) makes no difference to the plot during Inquisition. You just get to meet him and talk to him a little bit. Only the old god child changes the plot to any significance.

Also, Alistair shows up to Redcliffe with Anora instead of by himself. Which is nothing significant, especially if you ignore In Hushed Whispers (which you should). As for the Warden dying, that is the same for a default world state. So the only difference is the codex entry about the Hero of Ferelden. In the default it was a Dalish female.

While he has no effect on the plot, he has a big effect on Morrigan's personality. A player that cares about her and her past relationship with their dead Warden might get a kick out of meeting him and seeing his interaction with his mother. That would be worth a restart for me.

(Of course, I say that as someone who's played the whole game five times and wouldn't mind going through the prologue again.)

Seem being the important part of this sentence.

Meh, Champions of the Just, lolol!

Seriously, Dai Grepher is spot on. None of the stuff from the Keep matters at all to the overall game. I mean, that is sort of the point with the whole blank slate thing. There is minor dialogue changes, minor war table mission changes, a couple of codex entries that are different or what have you, but seriously, if you roll a default world state and do most of the stuff (or whatever) you're going to end up in the same place everyone else does, with lots of extra power you'll never need and whether Anders was offed or Morrigan had an OGB doesn't change the world, just a line or two in a cutscene or a lore entry.

If I could get the developer engine for Inquisition, I would mod the game to reflect a Cousland worldstate better. The banners on the king's road should be Cousland, the discussion with Leliana about the Hero and where she looked for him, Connor calling Alistair the king when he left to be a drunk, heck BioWare couldn't even be bothered to make Anora's last name Cousland as it should have been in that worldstate. BioWare was just lazy!

I would love to see what the community could do with a tool kit for this game... The Origins community did and still does amazing work with additional content, characters, etc. Problem is, if BW allowed right proper modding to be done... I have a feeling the community would create content that would simply make the base game even more lackluster than it already is and I don't imagine that's something the company is interested in. I'm not suggesting they should be.

That said, the lack of tools or dev eng access for a game that was touted as 'built for PC first and foremost' seems telling.

I'm really thankful for Morrigan and the child actually having some importance to the game, that was nice, but I was disappointed to discover that King Alistair had a very short screen time in comparison to the Warden version.
