Now as we all know we will be encountering some new species in our quest to explore a new galaxy and i'm hoping we will be able to see some significant differences between them and our human species. As a huge fan of the Mass Effect series one thing that always bothered me was the lack of creativity from the side of art designers when they were creating new species, keep in mind im not bashing them, they did a great job but am i the only one that thinks the aliens don't look like aliens? Now in all honesty nobody on this forums actually knows how the closest form of intelligent alien life looks like because well simply we didn't discover them yet, but what are the chances that the majority of species look human like? If we look at the human aesthetics and physical looks we will notice a lot of similarity with let's say the Asari, they are all the same heigh and weight they don't have some major characteristic that make them look different, then only difference is the skin pigment and the tentacle things on the back of their shull, the same can be said for the Drell who have only a few differences compared to humans, hell even the Batarians don't look particular different. Having said that i must compliment them for the work they done with the Yagh, Vorcha, Elcor and Rachni those species "look" alien they are different and wierd which is good. Anyway what do you think?

Making the Asari not look like fanservice would be a start. But that would probably mean a reboot of the species!

The problem with this is that some species need to be similar to Humans to make sense for some romances and also from a marketing standpoint but for the most part only the Asari are really the most Human like

The Turians are in most cases taller(atleast Saren was) and more bird/reptilian like

Quarians? Before ME3 Tali photo thing were a relative mystery and until you see an actual unmasked 3D model I say they still are (Was personally betting on some Davy Jones like tentacle face lol )

Drell are reptilian no buts about it, aside from the lips and nose, nope not human

Salarians and Krogans!? Yes I've people call them Human as well....lmao

Seriously people here should really take a better look at the aliens in ME because standing on 2 legs doesn't automatically make a species look like "its *insert color here* human". So many species in the series are both physically and genetically different from humans but in the end there will always be some minor similarities because the creators themselves are human

Humanoid appearances make it easier for them to work with. As you can see we didn't get much of the really alien feeling races, what made the Aliens alien was their culture and differences to how they breed and stuff like that. Every Scifi does this to Aliens and you should be use to it by now, some the biggest Franchise like Star Wars and Star Trek does this too.

Not really. Before Mass Effect 2 came out one of the books described the Quarians as being very human-like in appearance, with the only noticeable difference being the ears.

The problem with Tali's reveal wasn't that she looked too human, or too pretty (as a certain subset of the BSN like to argue whenever there's a debate over female alien's appearances) as that is consistent with the lore. The problem was the laziness of using a stock photo instead of having the character physically unmask.

The quarians are humans with glowing eyes, three fingers and toes, and bent shins. Basically take a short and curvy human woman, cut off two fingers and toes and bend her shins. Oh, put some face paint and photoshop glowing eyes.

The series has already lost it's scientific accuracy on the aesthetics of the aliens.

Explaining why the majority of races are bipedal is because they are all related would solve the issue. Or making them look like this:

The main Milky Way species were described in Revelations. They're pretty much set in stone.

New species however, can be made to look different.

Reaper design to keep galaxy bipedal species because they are easier to indoctrinate and control?

I don't quite know what kind of scifi people who claim ME aliens look too human like are used to, cause to me Bioware does aliens pretty un-humanlike compared to scifis I know. If there was alien race that looked exactly like humans look I'd understand it and I have seen aliens like those a lot, but there isn't so what is that bad in having some humanoid aliens in the game?

Before the Tali face reveal in ME3 the Asari were the only overly human aliens in the series. That was explained in the lore of the franchise, though. I forget if it was a pheromone or some inherent psychic/biotic defense they evolved but Asari somehow effect how others see them. Salarians think they look more like Salarians. Krogan think Asari look more like Krogans, Humans think they look more like humans. Since our character (and thus our perspective) has always been human, that is why they've always been portrayed more human-like.

Most of the species are designed to look humanoid for a good reason. It would be impractical to try designing a game where most of the characters walk and move differently from humans.

Mass Effect does a better job at creating varied alien species than most sci fi I can think of. I think that counts for something.

This

Anyone who played ME1 saw they were elf like there was more transparency in her mask. I only ever imagined them bald or with dreadlocks.

I tend to like the look of the aliens in the Mass Effect universe though I would like for there to be much more of a cultural dissonance since I feel that is often lacking and something I consider to be more meaningful than appearance in terms of making something alien.

That said, I can understand wanting there to be aliens that are entirely unlike humans in body because of different reasons. Amongst them being because it helps emphasis an exploration of the unknown.

The Rachni were a bit of this in terms of their appearance and language, the latter of which I found immensely fascinating with its implementation of colors and notes.

While more alien-looking aliens in Andromeda would be great, I think Bioware did a good job overall in the design of the other species. Most of them had to be humanoid or you wouldn't have had a game. It would not be practical to design many different species who were so alien that they all needed their own unique animations.

That said I think Bioware made the Quarians too humanoid with Tali's reveal in ME3. I think that is the only species where they really stumbled.

I never had any issues with the Mass Effect aliens following Earth analogues because Mass Effect was never designed to be "realistic". The directive of ME was to play around with the inspirations the team took from 1970's and 1980's Sci-Fi, and I applaud Bioware for how tight they kept to that brief, but still make the series appear contemporary to 21st Century audiences. Sometimes you really need to look deep into the ME lore to see how Bioware restricted themselves, but still managed the trick of making the series seem "futuristic". Some have criticized Bioware for not including technologies and concepts developed after the 1980's, but this is application of the original design inspirations, imo.

I'm all for variety in females, throw in a Turian female and I might romance just to see what she's like, are they all as awkward as Garrus? Lets find out.

Volus? She better take that mask off and reveal herself to be scout Harding.

I love curves, Liara had nice legs but lets try a Shiala body type this time.

And take the builds off guys like Joker. He should be skinny.

DONT TOUCH THE QUARIANS. Other Tha removing their masks.

I am all for non-anthropomorphic aliens. The weirder, the better. The Hanar, Elcor, Leviathans, Thorian, and Rachni are my favorite parts of Mass Effect. Be creative, go wild. But take inspiration from weird life on Earth (as Bioware has done in the past). Nature is far weirder than our imagination.
