I've known this for years.  There's something about well written game music that just adds to the overall experience.  But, what amazes me every time I hear it is how memory driven and powerful music can be.

Two moments in DAI that stand out the most to me are:

When you hear "The Dawn Will Come" being sung for the first time and you realize you recognize the song from the loading screen and the melody variations/themes that are interwoven into many other pieces you've encountered prior to leaving Haven.

When you speak to Varric after Here Lies the Abyss if you've sacrificed Hawke and hear that soulful cello from DA2.

Both of these are ingenious uses of music and taking you to a place that is familiar.  Nostalgia is a powerful emotion as I've been reminded every time I've started up DAO, DA2, or DAI after a hiatus.

Varric: Where's Hawke?

IQ: *silence*

Varric: Where's Hawke?

----

IQ: Hi Varric you ok?

*cue sad cello music*

Varric:  :(

IQ: *Hug Varric*

Me: *proceed to cry*

Nope, never happens in my games  :P

I love the soundtracks too. At this point I think DA Origins has the biggest pull on me but hearing the music from DA2 gets me also. I have as much of the Dragon Age music as I can, on my smartphone, so I can listen to it when I work out. I also love Oblivion's soundtrack. It makes me want to play it again.

I'm with you in regards to DAO - just starting up the game and hearing that music brings back years of memories and emotions and makes me want to dive right in and start yet another playthrough.  I honestly think the music is more powerful than the screenshots I use in a slideshow for my wallpaper on my PC.  The hundreds of screenies remind me of moments - the music reminds me of entire experiences.

Yes very nice sound tracks. Almost rate it up there with Icewind Dale and Vampire Bloodlines.

I personally felt that Inquisition's soundtrack was rather lacking overall. Most of the time you spend in the wilderness, in my experience at least, has been pretty thin on music in general. When it finally gets started, it's more often than not the brief melody of 'The Dawn Will Come' using brass instead of strings. The most successful songs I would say for inquisition are the tavern songs: 'Sera Was Never', 'I Am The One', 'Oh Grey Warden' etc. are all good in their own right, but are also context-sensitive to events in-game.

In Origins, 'The Party Camp', and whichever song plays on the main menu screen are super indicative of that game's mood, and are super memorable to people who played through it.

But as far as Inquisition is concerned, I'll remember the scene of walking through the snowdrifts alone more than the sudden booming voice of Giselle from outta nowhere.

I don't think it really needed music playing all the time, or kicking in with "fight track #3" every time there's a bit of combat.  It just needed some good music at the right moments when important events needed underscoring, and it did that perfectly.

I fond that DA2's soundtrack was a little weak but I really liked Origins and Inquisitions soundtracks!

I like the OST of the three games so far.

However, I wish they wouldn't be, for the most part, relegated to vanishing ambiance tiny segments triggering randomly while you explore in DAI.

We must discuss more about the soundtracks. They are the least talked subject in DA games.

It seems people discuss about vocal songs more than the theme soundtracks. I often see people mentioning DAI's tavern songs while ambients like The Lost Temple or In Hushed Whispers were rarely (or never) mentioned.

I really miss Aubrey Ashburn as Leliana's singing voice, and Inon Zur composing DA's music, for that matter. I'm glad Inon Zur composed Fallout 4's music.

Origins definitely had the most interesting sound to the music. The only thing I didn't like about DA:O's music was the use of This Is War by 30 Seconds to Mars; it doesn't fit the fantasy theme very well, and it's very different to the other music used. However, I think I'm Not Calling You A Liar by Florence + the Machine fits DA2 quite well.

The choice was Warden Alistair or Hawke.

Am I the only one who never gets Alistair or Loghain? Loghain is dead in all my games (because I prefer Alistair), and Alistair is either dead - after slaying the Archdemon - or the king of Ferelden. Poor Stroud, though.

This. Inquisition lacks Ashburn's angelic voice.

Why was the song not available for download? I mean the version Inon Zur had arranged.   :(

Agreed!  Although it's understandable why the songs with lyrics get more attention, background music can be powerful and moving, as well.  I really believe it's the sense of familiarity.  It's been over a year since I cranked up DAO but I can still hear the opening bars of the Title song:

It has vocals as well, but it's that horn in the first half dozen measures that brings me "home" and makes me yearn to play.

An interesting thing about the Emerald Graves in DAI is that there are places, out in the wild away from Orlesian structures, where the Orlais Theme can be heard.  It's like a not so subtle reminder that this beautiful area has seen an ugly past.
