I always try too, then either forget or think 'oh no I'll keep them just in case' and they don't ever get used.  Sometimes I remember tho and put them in each character's hot bar, cycling through them all and activating them, and they seem to help a little I guess.  Just like any potion would.  Rock salve is the one I used the most on my warriors.

However after 3 playthroughs I've come to conclusion that I'll never use the traps I take the time to make (and if I do they'll be in the wrong place anyway lol) or the potions or the salves.  Just sell them, and the materials, and give my inventory a break!

I still like Rock Salve though.

I use salves when i play on Nightmare, which is most of the time. Its useful for a tank atleast. I don't really use the crafting at all though, i make a few poisons if i play a rogue, but thats about it. Poultices and salves are everywhere so its not a big deal. Also i find traps to be a waste of time, and also kind of MEH.

I forgot about rogue potions, I do try and use them as often as possible.

I really tried with traps last time I played, but then I'd just get attacked as I tried to place them or the mobs would run round them....they never seemed to do anything significant enough to be worth the effort.

Yeah the trap system is hopeless, you can go full stealth, but not sure its worth the points. I am glad they made traps a part of the Rogue abilities in Dragon Age Inquisition, makes more sense. It might just be me though, i am terrible at taking advantage of things like this, and actually make it work.

Same.  I start a playthrough with grand intentions of mastering a combat option or mechanic, then after a while go 'nahhh' and end up just doing my regular thing.

I must try harder!  But then with things like traps in DA:O I think that as long as you give it a decent try, there's nothing wrong with washing your hands of it if it doesn't work for you.  I just have to remember to make an effort with things in case they do turn out to be awesome.   Like being a warrior in DA2, I didn't want to do it at all but actually it was pretty neat.  Got the Templar specialisation as it fit my characters pro-templar attitude, and I really enjoyed it.  Who knew....

on nightmare i use whatever lightning ones i have when i get hit with a chain lightning in early-mid game, also nature ones against the spider queen and broodmother, and i stock up on spirit balms for the archdemon. that's it.

i found traps very useful on a recent no magic run. there were a few really hard fights that i was only able to get past by setting up traps beforehand, but of course they're no good in a boss room, or once the fight is underway.

It's always good to save a few Greater Spirit Resistance Balms for the Archdemon fight. Archdemon Corruption Burst is a joke when you have 60% spirit resistance on everyone plus resistance bonuses from gear.

I just sell them, good for money. Too bad because it should be useful, but it is better just kill the enemy mages as fast as we can.

I never craft salves, because better make bombs and poisons than salves

As for trap, it is only useful against enemies behind doors, need Survival to detect them, then place traps outside the door, let someone open the door, the enemies will rush out and get trapped.

I use them all at certain times (except incense of awareness). They really help against some of the harder bosses.

I usually forget about them until I need to clear space in my inventory and hit a merchant, tbh.

I hear they can be useful against high level bosses like the Harvester in the Golems of Amgarrak DLC, though.

I use swift salve fairly frequently.

Fire/spirit balm against high dragons/AD.

Pretty much nothing else.

That’s the only time I’ve ever used any of them. I might have used the Greater Warmth Balm one time when I fought the Mountain Top dragon. But that’s it. They’re just taking up space in my pack that could be better spent on health poultices and lyrium potions.

RE: traps. Never used them but apparently their main purpose is to make lots of money early on; apparently Allison in Lothering pays very well for them.

Yes they usually sit around in my pack taking up space. Then when the big fight happens where they would be usefull i forget to use them..

On Nightmare, I think traps can be useful situationally, as when a squishy rogue is dealing with mobs of Fade!darkspawn during Lost in Dreams, or for slowing down the large groups of baddies in Jarvia's Hideout... set traps outside the doors and use the the narrow openings as a bottleneck. Most of the time, there's not a lot of opportunity to mine the field, though. And it does require meta gaming.

And on-topic, I use Spirit Balm for the Archdemon, and Warmth Balm if I fight not!Andraste, and occasionally on my melee fighters for smaller draconoids and rage demons. And sometimes Swift Salve, for bosses,  if I remember that I have it.

Yes, that’s part of the problem. I usually just forget I have this stuff.

On a similar note, I finally got a copy of Awakening. Are the Stamina Draughts of any use, or should I just dump them?

I think safer to dump them. I set Sigrun to use them in her tactics and she got addicted to them.
Chucking them down like there was no tomorrow.

Dump the low tier ones. Warriors can use Second Wind so they don't need draughts. Rogues benefit from them especially in some of the boss fights, but you need higher tier Greater/Potent or above and these have to be crafted or bought from merchants. Some can only be obtained by crafting.

Well, I’m glad this game has a straightforward, simple crafting system, then. I’m still smarting from the chaotic mess that was Neverwinter Nights 2’s crafting system. I’m getting a headache just thinking about it!

Your kidding, right?
You have to make like 7 trillion runes to come out with 1 Paragon Rune.

Salves? I use them only to wash my warden under the  waterfall of the brecilian forest,my warden like to be cool
As for the traps,if you now on how to use them you can pretty much solo the game from DAO to the end of WH.
I like that the made traps available both for warrior and rogues,in fact i do not understand as for why a warrior would be incapable to make traps.
a reaver warrior with the stealth ability add via console was   the best killer i made far better than the Arcane warrior.

I use it for nightmare difficulties.
