Let's discuss the possible minigames. I'm not talking about scanning or hacking (although those could return as well). I'm talking about stuff you do for fun.

Every great RPG had it's own money sink. Final Fantasy VIII had Triple Triad, IX had Tetra Master, hell Final Fantasy VII had an entire casino. KotOR I and II had Pazaak, Witcher I and II had Dice Poker and most recently Witcher III had Gwent. The fact that people are begging for a standalone Gwent game shows that such minigames can and do become very popular among the players.

Mass Effect however avoided this so far.

Should this change? Could we encounter some special card game the inhabitants of the Andromeda galaxy play to gamble?

Are you for or against it? If for it, what should it be? If against, why?

There better not be any, I'm sick of that crap.

And have you already forgotten about Quasar? You could play it in both ME1 and ME3.

Ah yes, thanks. Totally forgot about Quasar. Granted it is easy to forget about it as it only appears in one place don't play against opponents.

A card game is the way to go for me. The Witcher 3 nailed it, but all it did was repeat what was done in Rage years and years ago. A card game that uses in universe characters is a very good idea, not only the game is fun in itself, but it create a very cool sense of progression as you collect new cards.

Speaking about Rage, it's the game with the best minigames I've seen so far. There were many others that were very fun to play, I probably spent a few hours in them all together. Bioware should definitely take a good look at that game.

I would be in favor of ME2 Bypass and Hacking making a return, and the return of Omnigel for those who can't handle them.  Otherwise I don't want completely superfluous minigames.  I was playing some Citadel last night thinking about how I wouldn't be at the arcade at all if I didn't have to play their games to get some of the upgrades.

That would take weeks to write down. :) But anyway, I wouldn't mind a one or two minigames in MEA because I know many likes them but they shouldn't be tied to anything important; that the only way to achieve something or complete a mission is to play them. Like in ME3 the only way to get the Phantom armor was to play shooting game at the Armax Arena. If they're just for fun - perhaps for getting a few credits - that would be okay.

I've never spend any time at the Citadel game arcade in any of my playthroughs.

Bahh of course not. Pazaak, Gwent and Triple Triad are also purely optional. Just for fun and extra money. And maybe acheievement points. A whole armor set....well I think even that can pass. But definitely not tied to story progression. Although it would be funny if the big bad would agree to settle the score with a friendly game of cards if you are playing paragon and don't want to blast his/her/its brains out.

And I remember I had to win a card championship in FF X-2 just to get 100% completion for the secret ending.

If I want puzzles, I play HOG or Nancy Drew.

No.

Well X-2 was utter garbage. Puzzles are a different matter. I'm sure we will have to do at least one at some point during the story. Either the 4 units with 3 and 6 containers, or the tower of hanoi. ME1 had the latter while Kotor had both. I really don't mind if we have to think a bit between shooting. Its a bit disappointing if all the traps and ancient ruin or a very secret base can throw at us are automated defenses and two doors that need to be hacked.

Dating sim mini-game.

Well that would be an improvement over the usual romance system. :D

I love mini-games in games to accomplish things (such as hacking, scanning) but I detest mini-games for the sake of your character gaming in a game.  I don't know why, but I can't stand playing stupid gambling games for money in a game.  Unless there's an actual point, such as making good money by gambling (but this isn't something we should be teaching people) I really don't like them.

But something like.. calling in strategems in helldivers? I love that stuff.  The simon says mini-game for recovering resources on a planet and such?  I like that stuff too.  It's a lot better than just a button press.  I was really sad when they got rid of the memory game for overriding doors or the match game (this one wasn't as fun) for hacking a datapad in ME3.  I mean, you just walk up to a door and press a button and wait.  Is that really better than having something to do?  And, I really loved it how in the first game, if you didn't feel like hacking or playing those mini games, you could simply use omni-gel.

But that's my take on it.  Hate games like quasar, but love the mini hack games.

I also liked the hacking games. Hell I even sort of liked scanning. I know I'm in the minority but it was sort of relaxing. And it made sense you know. It's kinda what you expect planet scanning to look like.

Normally I would say screw the minigames and concentrate on the maxigame.

However, I'm currently replaying Mass Effect 3 and was thinking just last night how interesting it would be to sit down and play poker with Vega and the refugees aboard the Citadel. Then I got to thinking about the poker table aboard the Normandy and in Shepard/Anderson's apartment and how it never gets any interactive use.  I'd be okay with changing that in the next game.

In my fantasy, it'd be something like TellTale's Poker Night 2 game - choosing three or four shipmates for a friendly game and enjoying the conversation that comes naturally from sticking those people together in a casual situation with money on the line.  Lots of room for humor and character exploration with a small demand on animation and resource creation.  A lot of extra work for the writers, though.

So if they do it in a way that lets me know the characters better, I'm all on board.  If it's just another Quasar or Castle Arcade, though, I really don't care.

Yeah. That would also be nice. A bit more interaction with your team. And if its not poker but something with NPC's on them like Triple Triad or Gwent, you could even win the card version of team mates this way.

Stand alone Gwent I would buy and I didn't even like TW.

The card minigame in FF8(?) still gets talked about between me and my cousin.

So long as its not a rip off of what someone else has done I suppose.

I'm all for a return of the hacking minigames. They were always a fun and appropriately brief distraction from the chaos. Minigames like quasar I don't care about one way or the other. I think it would be awesome to have a 'weekly poker game' or it's equivalent onboard our new ship in ME:A where we can actually talk and joke with different companions and crew members from game to game. I agree that the best gear in the game should never be tied to a minigame, though. Maybe some spiffy gear at the bottom of the high end stuff but never the best gear.

On that note, I hope we get to see some easter egg gear again. Like the Blood Dragon armor and the stuff you got in ME from playing Kingdoms of Amalur. I always love little nods like that. Maybe ME:A will have an armor or weapon giving a nod to this new IP we know nothing about yet.

Yeah Triple Triad is awesome. That's why they brought it back for FFXIV.

I also don't want a ripoff, but I'm sure Bioware can come up with something inventive.
