Hi,

 

I have looked everywhere for the answer but cant find it anywhere.

Does anyone know what the symbols indicate that are shown

above the battle menu, which I have pointed to with a red arrow

in the below image

I know what each one represents, i.e. the one shown in the below image

it means 'Sundered'. But is this showing that the active character is 

having their status effected by being Sundered? or is it showing

what the active characters next attack is.

I believe it means that you're sundered only if you were attacked by a qunari spearman. Otherwise it should mean that next time you use payback strike while that icon is shown it will do bonus damage and knock down the target.

If you're unsure what a status effect symbol means, you can often find out by going into tactical combat mode (by pressing the touch bar in the middle of the ps remote) and hovering over the affected party member. Failing that, it will be secondary effect from the (pictured) power.

That info is very helpful and as you said hovering over the character does indeed show what effect they currently have on them.

Sadly, hovering over the icon just gives you a tooltip with the name and doesn't actually say what it means.

 

That is for Payback Strike.

 

If you've recently taken damage, if you payback the strike within the next 5 seconds your hit will do 200% more damage. That icon is letting you know that you have recently taken damage, so you can use Payback Strike within that window for increased damage.
