The male elf doesn't look bad in the spa scene with Vivienne, though. I think the default beige pyjamas are just really unflattering on male elves.

You misspelled "everyone" there. ;)

I actually think the pyjamas look good on my canon Inquisitor.

In that case what I'll concede to you is that they should've made the shoulders maybe an inch or two wider to account for the waist not being as narrow as that of the females. That's it. No emaciated concentration camp comparisons needed.

But they're a different species? Why would we need to make the shoulders wider? Now you're just imposing your human standards! ;)

You'd need more than one or two inches. You'd need something closer to 5 or 6. The male elf's chest should only be a little narrower than the male human chest on that size model. Here's NBA player Kevin Garnet next to Lebron James (the latter who is build like a tree, the former who is quite thin):

More to the point, the comparison continues to be appropriate based on how those clothes look. That matters when it comes to that aesthetic.

I'm just saying that a bipedal humanoid body shape should have arms that naturally fall by its sides and admitting that they got that wrong.

The idea that they should necessarily look like a slightly small real human with pointy ears is what I take issue with. I still see no good reason for it beyond your whims. Not-quite-human is a perfectly good aesthetic for me in a fantasy universe.

How about we just a body slider option or make future dragon age games cc like saints row? This way people get their anorexic elven and others can buff up their elf characters the way they wish. As I said I prefer dao elven bodies but would like a mix of both.

I'd love to see this, but they had enough problems getting the cinematics right with just eight fixed body types. Imagine what would happen with all that extra variation. It would make them a whole lot of extra work that I'm not sure they want to invest in.

They look positively silly on a dwarf.

Well, that goes for most things, really. :P

I don't know why you keep thinking I argue for human proportions. I've argued - constantly - that whatever they choose just has to be aesthetically pleasing. All my references to our proportions have been to explain what is displeasing about the current model.

You're still not arguing with me, so much as repeatedly making a point that's tangential.

The furthest I've gone is to say that if they want to make the elves small and slight the only way to make the model work is to approach our propitious more closely.

And we've hit the nail on the head that you don't find the current design displeasing. That's fine. But all this nonsense about anthropocentricism is just window dressing to a debate about subjective taste.

I could equally say "All this nonsense about emaciated concentration camp survivors and basketball players is just window dressing to a debate about subjective taste."

Subjective taste doesn't spring from nowhere. You don't like the look because it reminds you of real-world things which are distasteful to you. I disagree as to the extent of the similarities and also don't let the real world interfere so much with my opinions of a fantasy game.

Edit: And good luck getting anyone to agree on what "aesthetically pleasing" is. Have you seen the DA mod community? I'd take the dreaded beige pyjamas over some of the supposed "improvements" any time.

Edit 2: And what I'm also saying is that I don't hold aesthetics to be as important as you do. I find the Qunari aesthetically displeasing as I don't particularly like giant muscled people, but I have zero problem with them being in the game, as they are a fantasy race. I think that creating distinct racial identities is more important than attempting to conform to some aesthetic norm that people can't even agree on.
