I could never write and listen to music at the same time. Either the music would distract me or I'd completely block it out and it would serve no purpose anyway.

 

I usually listen to instrumentals while writing. It help me concentrate and I won't get distracted easily from outside noises (I don't live alone). Sometimes I went into complete trance.

But if I want to write something that require a certain mood, I usually try to find something that help me immerse myself into that feeling. Usually Bear McCreary stuff.

I would notice very little around me when writing too then.

Fortunately it doesn't happen that often or I'd drive people around me nuts.

I started a Mass Effect fanfic project earlier this year and was hoping that would turn up as a scifi romance (having trouble writing a good scifi recently). But I'm planning a short YA speculation fic for my writing group.. which is a response to something ridiculous recently, very Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. Got to love writing fiction when you're angry.

Just a group of writers together really. It makes you feel less alone and people can encourage each other to write. I joined a local NaNoWriMo group in 2011, then several more writing groups. I learn new techniques, learn how to write ethnography, trade skills, discuss issues, meet new people. It can be stressful but it can be very enlightening and helpful.
