How do I get rid of the purple flames to get to the loot?

You don't. You eventually get a Mark upgrade that lets you bypass the flames by making you temporarily invincible.

Thank you - that's the first upgrade one with the light making ability too?

You can also use the Champion's temporary invincibility to get by, or Fade Step (I think).

Or switch over to the mage in the party, cast barrier and run past the flames. Only the mage, not the entire party. No point dragging the whole lot since one may get stuck, get seriously injured and waste healing potions.

Hi All

I can now navigate the purple flames.  Thanks again for your help with this problem!

Haha. I remember when I was so stubborn in using the mage barrier to pass the flames but the character would die just a second before reaching it and be ported back to the rest of the team behind..

It took me a few tries to find a spot on the stairs which was a little further so the barrier would last enough. Haha

Some of the earliest flames can be bypassed without crossing them.  Found out the hard way.  Not all, but some.
