The two upgrades to Stealth are both nice. I switch between them. With Lost in the Shadows you can cancel status effects, like those crazy wraiths that set you on fire. With Clinging Shadows you can hit with Twin Fangs and then Deathblow while still in Stealth.

I’ve tried Evade on several characters and never thought I got my money’s worth; maybe I’m not good at anticipating attacks. I do like upgraded Hook and Tackle with no cooldown (not that they accomplish the same thing). It becomes a game to see how long I can keep Deathblow off cooldown. The corpses before you hit the castle in the Fallow Mire are great for this. My favorite character so far has been an Assassin Archer. I don’t like running around the battlefield waiting to do something. Hook and Tackle gets you there right away, interrupts enemies, and does damage too.

I see most of you prefer Throwing Blades over Shadow Strike. I can never decide which I like best. Shadow Strike does have an advantage by being a Detonator. I don’t usually take Pincushion for my DW. Is it Pincushion that gives Throwing Blades the edge?

It's not just about evading attacks. I use Evade to get into the flanking cone more quickly, particularly for an enemy that moves around alot.

Fair enough. Flank Attack (despite the name) doesn't always get you there. And I am running with The Bosun's Blade/Deepstalker Sigil.

Are you still carrying two mages for your DW Qunari? I'm finding Sera to be the MVP of my DW Qunari party. I've finished some of the more difficult Hinterlands Rifts with only Sera still standing. This is all pre-Skyhold.

DW Assasin QF, Dorian, Solas, Iron Bull -- unless there are a lot of demons, like Abyss, in which case I swap out IB for Cass.

Huh, usually my Archers do poorly pre-Skyhold on AI control, particularly Varric. After Sera goes Tempest, though, she's a beast. Flask of Lightning under AI control is like a Gatling Laser gun.

Update: I just hit level 14. FT Masterworks are in much better shape now. The build is starting to come together, but I still don't have it quite right. I can't make up my mind to go deep in DD first or in Assassin. I don't have enough points to do both. I tried doing without Evade for a while, but felt clumsy and slow without it, so I respeced and just have to live with points split between three trees. I'm currently deep in Assassin and shallow in DD, which means I don't have anything on the right side except for Twin Fangs.

Still limiting myself to Tier 2 schematics, though I'm starting to legitimately get some Tier 3 mats, so that's helping.

Is it fun?

In the "yes" column: Hidden Blades, ability and proc, is fun. Setting it up in the flanking cone in Stealth for the sake of Knife in the Shadows is fun. Planning out the battle for maximum effect, without pausing or using Tactical, is fun.

In the "no" column: I don't yet have the muscle memory to do the optimal sequence of abilities. I fumble a lot. For example, I can't seem to remember to go into Stealth after Mark of Death, not before. I keep wasting my crits because all my Stealth abilities are on cooldown and I've got a Mark of Death ticking away. I also kind of wish MoD had a more dramatic visual effect. I often can't tell if it did anything or not in the heat of battle. Only in video review do I notice that small-font, red, 5 digit damage number. ;)

I figure if I can get some kind of cooldown buff going, things will be a bit more forgiving if I mess up the sequence. As it stands now, I spend a lot of time out of Stealth just doing auto-attacks to regain Stamina and waiting for cooldowns to expire, which isn't all that fun. But, since it's mostly my fault, too soon to tell.

I will say this, though. By level 14, I was consistently having fun with Archer Artificer and DW Tempest. So, Assassin is taking a bit longer to "get there" for me. I do feel like I'm almost there, though.

Stamina items help since Double Daggers has more stamina demands than Archery (but shorter cooldowns). If you are not using the Deepstalker Sigil, the Great Bear Sigil lets you use abilities frequently and Dance of Death (+50 stamina each kill) usually keeps it charged. Otherwise, the Enhanced Stamina amulet (+25) and the +10 stamina masterwork gives you 135 (which just happens to be what you need for Twin Fangs, Deathblow, and Flank Attack). I'm not sure, but it may not be possible to get more than 200 stamina.

Stealth lasts so long, I don't think it matters that you Stealth before Mark of Death. I like to Stealth before running into battle. It's usually full again by the time I hit the first enemy. [EDIT: I've played with Clinging Shadows so much, that I totally forgot that Mark of Death takes you out of Stealth.]

Flank Attack has an 8 second cooldown, so you should be able to go into Stealth almost constantly.

Hope you get there. I've enjoyed all my Assassin playthroughs (but then, I guess I've enjoyed every specialization).

Speaking of DW Assassins, I just realized that I have no idea what Bioware means in the descriptions  for the fade-touched materials that give Hidden Blades. When they say "5 added hits" - added to what? to the 3 (or 6 with the upgrade) hits that the Hidden Blades ability gives you. 6 + 5 = 11 seems like more hits than I am seeing. So does "5 added hits" simply mean "5 hits"?

You're correct, it's 5 added hits on top of whatever you used to proc the masterwork.

Agreed, but I would describe it a bit differently. It's like the Hidden Blades ability, but doing 3 (standard), 4 or 5 hits, respectively.
