Exactly how did it go from asphyxiating during planetary reentry to being on a Cerberus operating table? Feel free to guess if you don't know. I just can't make heads or tails of this one.

Project Lazarus. Yes you were dead but Lazarus, like the character/person, were brought back. Project Lazarus was designed by Cerberus to help reanimate dead tissue with minimal damage, aside from what caused the death.

It was recovered, obviously. There's a four-part comic book called Mass Effect: Redemption that covers the details.

Knowing Cerberus, they were probably cloaked when the Normandy goes down and scooped you off that planet you fall towards.

Apparently you weren't entirely dead. There was enough of you left "alive" that they could revive you with an insane amount of resources. One character references to you being put into stasis immediately after being found, which would suggest you were simply floating around space and they found you just before that last spark of life (probably at the cellular level) was gone.

a better question would be how there was a body to recover at all. no matter what kind of armored suit shep was wearing....it would have completely vaporized during entry into the atmosphere. maybe if there wasnt an atmosphere or if it was really really thin....but the way that planet looked its atmosphere was pretty substantial.

jacob says you were dead as dead can be...or as dead as dead gets...or something like that.

shep was all the way entirely dead. at least thats how it was presented to us.
