Not interested in crunching numbers, just curious what your favorite mage specialization is for roleplaying purposes. I figure Rift mage and KE are easiest to 'justify' (because of the mark, and because of being a Circle mage or an elf). Any Necromancers around? How and why did your Inquisitor choose one or the other?

Knight Enchanter because is the closest thing we have to the original Arcane Warrior (sadly absent from DA2). My Inquisitor chose to become one in order to tell the grandchildren he slew Corifish with a "thought sword".

Necromancy for my "Prince Charming” Karl.

"Dear" Vivienne hates it. Are more reasons needed at this? ;)

Knight Enchanter since I like Arcane Warrior in DA:O.

Knight Enchanter was super easy to justify for my Dalish mage. Specialization has its roots in ancient elven tradition, you can bet she's gonna be all over that. Combine that with the fact that is seems to come with a bit of military command training which is a good idea for the Inquisitor to have. And to top it all off it comes with a magical light saber. There was no question really.

In many respects it depends on a character, really. If I play, say, a reluctant hero who figures out that he/she is pretty good at all that leading at the front and jumping into the heat of battle - knight enchanter. If I play more mischievous and flexible characters - rift mage. The ones with certain intensity to them - necromancer. And so on and so forth.

But favorite so far? Rift mage. Because it's the most trollish of them all - I imagine the enemies on the field must absolutely HATE me (and Solas, for that matter, depending on a spec). More than any others at the very least: how infuriating being constantly interrupted has to be! To be put on the ground when preparing a careful attack; to be flinged like a ragdoll across the field or being slammed into your mate and sprawl on the floor every now and then. It's glorious :D

I prefer Rift Mage for the RP reason that if anyone could control the rift it should be the person with the anchor in their hand, and also because to me it makes sense for a mage to be directing the flow of battle from a distance instead of wading into the fray like a warrior.

I've come around to favor rift mage, both because it seems the most thematic for the Inquisitor, and because I feel guilty about letting Your Trainer's mental damage be in vain otherwise.

Cassy was not glad about the decision likewise, but ahe was appeased ;)

This is pretty much how I feel. Rift is the perfect fit with the Anchor. Necromancy, as much as I like it for an actual spec, is kinda creepy story-wise. KE, with the trainer's talk of wading into battle alongside my soldiers, just seemed unappealing (I don't like to melee as a mage).

I always choose my spec for RP reasons, and never numbers reasons. I never took blood spec in DAO or DA2 for the same reasons, and will not take it if it's offered again in DA4.

I miss force spec... :( (Yes, I know Rift has some elements of this, but still.)

I like Necromancer, and have taken it as well, but... well, I always bring Dorian around as my mage after Solas' departure, and two necromancers get redundant quickly.

Originally rolled a knight enchanter for my rebel mage because I liked the gameplay the best, but since I am doing a playthrough on next-gen now, I may pick necro. Close as you can get to the dark arts, and the fluff for KE makes you seem like you carry water for the Chantry. For RP reasons, I can't see my rebel mage embracing KE training.

Plus, I hear necro is good these days, it was kind of crap on my PS3 try.

I never bring Solas or Vivienne anywhere, so Dorian is my solo mage. My main is a warrior these days.

Vivienne fun with Cole.

I like Solas.

Rift mage and Necromancer seem to have a little more extra dialogue with followers than KE. If memory serves, I believe you get an extra line of dialogue from Sera and Viv with KE, and with Rift and Necromancer you get a couple of extra lines with Cole, Solas, and Dorian.

Knight Enchanter, as I played as an Elfy Elf. I didn't actually realise it was Elfy at the time, my in game justification for it was because of the attack on Haven. Towards the ends, she picked up a sword and pointed it at Cory, instead of trying to prepare a spell or something like that. It seemed like grabbing a blade was her first instinctual reaction to the danger, so I thought KE made the most sense for her to pick. Finding out the Elfy stuff was nice surprise!

Solas comments on KE as well!

You're absolutely right! I totally forgot. I only played a KE once, and it's been a while. :)
Also, just remembered there is extra dialogue from Blackwall and, I *think* Cass, regarding Necromancer in addition to Cole, Solas, and Dorian.

Rift Mage because 1) I felt morally obligated to learn it from the poor, exhausted instructor and 2) because by the end of the game we're short one rift mage.

Oh dang I didn't even think of that. Kind of a waste now!

A more humorous minded Inquisitor could look at their melting hand and think, "Should have gone with Necromancy," before passing out.

Knight Enchanter with its lore and backstory of Knight Enchanters personally serving the divines is perfect for a chantry loyalist trying to restore order in the face of the ruthless and destructive rebel mages and templars and for putting down a evil Tevinter cult led by a ancient evil.

For me, rift mage was the best for RP and fun with the quizzy I gave the spec to but KE wasn't bad. I just like the abilities of the rift mage tree a little more.

This is fascinating. I love reading everybody's thought process on why they chose what they chose.

Rift Mage because A) I felt morally obligated to learn it from the poor, exhausted instructor and B) because by the end of the game we're short one rift mage.

This has got to be the most practical reason. *shakes fist at eggs in general*

I love Blackwall's thoughts on the necro spec. He thinks you want to screw corpses... and you have the option of telling him you simply want to live forever.
