First and foremost, hello everyone.

I am not new to Dragon Age but I purchased DA:I a few weeks ago, I already played till I reached Skyhold, I am playing on Normal difficulty, but my inquisitor now dies very much constantly, she is fried whenever I encounter those bothersome Red Lyrium Templars and Horrors especially the one that shoots a lot of pins, I die also from despair demon constantly and rifts battles is becoming hard, I already defeated Fereldan frostback at level 10, now I am level 17 and can't get near those dragons in Emprise du Lion, and I am simply lacking any kind of strategy to win most of the battles, also I can't find good equipment to gear up with or simply I have no comparison to tell if my gear is good or not, my Inquisitor is a Human Two-Handed Style Warrior level 17.

Any help or guide would be welcome.

~thanks

Welcome!

Kind of a lot to talk about. I'll touch on the biggest items, but there are lots of little things that can help, like, Bee Grenades. Upgrade them to the max.

Emprise du Lion is one of the highest level, and therefore most difficult, maps in the game. The dragons are the most difficult and the rifts you find there are the second most difficult in the main game (Hissing Wastes are the most difficult). If you haven't done much in the middle difficulty maps yet, like the Emerald Graves and The Exalted Plains, that could explain why you are struggling with EdL. The loot and crafting materials you would have gathered in those maps would have helped you with EdL.

If you want to go dragon hunting, you must, must, must gear appropriately. Bee Grenades, Antivan Fire for the frost dragons, best possible armor and weapons, best Fade-Touched bonus powers, Dragon-slaying runes for everyone. While it is possible to do no crafting and beat the game (I've done it), it is waaaaaaaaaaay easier to craft good gear.

Which brings me to crafting in general. Work on crafting better gear, particularly armor. At level 17 you should be using Tier 3 schematics with Tier 3 materials.

You didn't mention a specialization, but I bet it is Reaver. Reaver can be a fun 2H specialization, but it takes extra effort to learn how to play it properly. Or else, you just die a lot, as seems to be the case for you. You would have had a much easier time as Champion. Worse is if you don't have a specialization at all, at level 17, that's a pretty big mistake (unless you are doing a speedrun or other specialty victory condition). Explaining how to play Reaver would take a whole post in itself, but I'll just say this: craft for critical chance and heal on hit, spam War Cry and Horn of Valor to generate guard, use Devour to restore health, and combos are your friend. If you are not using Pommel Strike to set up combos, you are missing out on tons of damage. Not to mention Flow of Battle.

If your 2H is using a non-unique sword or greataxe, switch to a maul. Unless you have the unique greataxe Rebuke of the Sunderland (which, btw, is relatively easy to get in EdL if you have a rogue with Deft Hands), mauls will give you higher base damage than swords or greataxes, level for level. Since abilities like Mighty Blow and Whirlwind multiply your base weapon damage, the higher that base damage, the more damage those abilities do. Once you get to Level 20, do the quest to get Sulevin's Blade, which is one of the best 2H weapons in the main (non-DLC) game.

Finally, post your 2H build. Section by section, describe where you spent your skill points. Did you put any points into Battlemaster or Vanguard (you should have)? What passives do you have? If there are problems with your build, we can help you fix it with a Tactician's Amulet.

Thanks, PapaCharlie9, for your reply.

As for my 2H build,

All abilities of 2H with their upgrade, I am using Pommel Strike, it sometimes deals +3k and other times +1k, however, I am using a ring to enhance this ability, I am not sure if 2 rings would stack or not, I am also learned War Cry and Bull Charge to quickly disable mages and other pisky enemies, haven't choose specialization yet cause I am hesitant between Reaver and Champion, since this is my first playthrough it seems reaver is hard to handle.

As for the Gear, I already found the Axe or Maul you mentioned that can be found in EdL, I also have the Chromatic Axe (which is cool btw :) )

Armor: Battlemaster Mail (227 Armor Rating, +255 Max. Health, +10% Fire Resist, Heal 15% of Damage taken over 10 seconds, using sigil of the great bear)

Rings: Enhanced Pommel Strike, Enhanced Earthshaking

Amulet: Amulet of Renewal

Belt: Superb Belt of Fire Resistance

Another standard question: have you equipped any item that grants the 'Berserk' ability (eg used fade-touched dragonling scales when crafting or equipped a weapon granting this).

This is a fairly common mistake and, since Berserk causes you to take 100%, 200% or even 300% more damage, can really impact on a character's survivability.

Edit: by your second post it sounds like this is not the problem, so as PapaCharlie9 suggested, this is probably just a case of going to over levelled regions.

So EdL is a high level region, I thought regions automatically (AI) sorts itself out according to your (inquisitor) level.

As for Berserk I am , indeed, crafting indeed an armor has this effect and gave it to Blackwall.

I have a feeling that you put too many points in 2H tree....

Not saying Whirlwind and Earthshaking Strike are bad, but there are better skills to help you in defense.

If you don't mind spamming some broken skills, then get combat roll+ dealing damage upgrade, and Horn of Valor+  getting 10% guard when you attack upgrade. Just spam HOV and CR then you can easily pass, I think.

If you don't like the above, then I suggest the following:

2H tree: get Mighty Blow+ upgrade (both upgrades are good, personally I like +3 secs knockdown ), Shield Breaker(with high critical chance build, it is amazing for DPS), Block and Slash, Battle of Flow(very amazing with high critical chance build), Pommel strike+ upgrade (strongly recommend Staggering Strike)

Battle Master tree: Go left side to get Horn of Valor+upgrade

Vanguard tree: War Cry+ upgrade, Challenge, Trust the Steel(+20% armor rating is huge), Untouchable Defense(enlarge your guard pool), Charge Bull+upgrade.

Weapon and Shield tree: get Turn the Bolt (very helpful when you fight range enemy)

This costs 20 skill points. Since you are lv 17 human, it should be possible.

Use Wary Cry and HOV to build guard. Use Charge Bull, Mighty Blow and Pommel Strike to keep your enemy on ground or stunned. This strategy is simple and efficient. also looting or buying some good schematics also helps.

Good Luck!

So, like I said before, that's a pretty big mistake. Most people have their specialization selected and most of their points in it, by level 10. Personally, I like to have my specialization quest completed by level 7.

Do the Champion quest and get the Champion skills. You will have a much easier time once you have the Walking Fortress ability. You can do Reaver if you want, but I think you'll be more frustrated.

In the meantime, buy a Tactician's Amulet in the undercroft and equip it and then rebuild your skills to something like this (assuming 18 points, you probably have one or two more):

1. Grappling Chain

2. Give Them The Boot

3. Crippling Blows

4. Coup de Grace

5. Horn of Valor

6. Fortifying Blast (although you can experiment with toggling to That's The Spirit against rifts with Despair demons)

Both Grappling Chain and Fortifying Blasts are great for 2H warriors as active skills. Spam the heck out of Fortifying Blast and have tons of fun with Grappling Chain, boot to lay the enemy out on the ground, Mighty Blow to finish them.

7. War Cry

8. Battle Roar

9. Charging Bull

10. Gore and Trample

11. Untouchable Defense

War Cry and Charging Bull you already have and know how to use. Untouchable Defense passive works together with those abilities, as well as Horn of Valor, to insure you have a lot of guard.

12. Block and Slash

13. Flow of Battle

14. Pommel Strike

15. Lightning Jab (although if your Mighty Blow or Whirlwind is always on cooldown before the stun wears off, use Staggering Strike)

16. Mighty Blow

17. Shield Breaker

18. Whirlwind

Actives are Pommel Strike, Mighty Blow and Whirlwind, leaving you with one last slot for a Mark of the Rift.

To detonate a combo, first hit an enemy with Pommel Strike, then while they are stunned, hit them with Mighty Blow or Whirlwind.

If you have additional points to spend, you can upgrade Whirlwind and/or Mighty Blow, although there is something to be said for doing this instead if you have 2 more points:

19. Combat Roll

20. Coming Through

That skill does 500% (not 250% like it says) and is the lowest cooldown and stamina skill for that damage level. You could win battles all by yourself doing nothing but Combat Roll and Horn of Valor.

As for Berserk I am , indeed, crafting indeed an armor has this effect and gave it to Blackwall.

That is a mistake also. Give Blackwall new armor.

For your own gear, craft for critical chance, and once that is maximum, critical damage. Flow of Battle in both of the builds above gives you a huge benefit for landing critical hits.

For rings, it's best to use any of: Attack, Critical Chance, Critical Damage, Bleeding/Sundering, Life Drain, Flanking -- and any of the special uniques, like Ring of Doubt. If you are dragon hunting, Armor Penetration and Guard Penetration are better than nothing, but the previous rings are much better. All the rest you should sell for gold.

Amulets, it's best to use anything that boosts Critical Chance, Strength or Constitution, Cooldowns, Stamina, and Barrier.
