I think some people's problem with Darksiders is the transcription was quite literal (right down the hookshot)

Sometimes you look at something and go "Oh, A Zelda clone" and sometimes you go "Oh! this is sort of Zelda-inspired in some way!"

I think Darksiders was often the former...

Well they did have a boomerang (dressed as a giant shuriken), and the horse, plus other things that follow the general style.

And on an unrelated note, they totally copied the portal gun, even down to the color of the portals.

Still, I think the quality of implementation should trump whether it's derivative.

Well I'm a fan of Zelda clones as much as the next person, that's why the series caught my attention, so I mean I sort of agree with that general idea.

I just could never bring myself to go all the way and say it was the greatest thing... I think I was just annoyed at how sluggish the movement seemed.

Ultimately it was a I want to like you more but I can't kinda thing.

That's a fair complaint, and its why I like the more fast paced movement and gameplay in the second game more.
