I played the original Dragon's Dogma on PS3. Never upgraded to Dark Arisen. I had a lot of fun with it, but never really got grabbed by the game. Not sure why as it's well done and fun. But I never played it all the way though. Got pulled back into replaying other games instead, like the Fallouts, Skyrim, and ME3MP.

Some of the best gameplay ever, though @TSS is not wrong. Climbing (which is a favorite thing of mine to do) on beasts, can be er___"wonky".
In the processes of downloading it on the PC, as I type!

I played the hell out of this on 360. And now I'm playing the hell out of it again on PC.
Much more enjoyable than DA:I. No oversized maps, it's fun, and rewards technical play. For example, got it handed to me by a group of skeletons (because why not rush hard mode). Solution? Throw an explosive barrel into their midst. Problem solved.
DA:I's solution would be holding down attack for two minutes with the occasional skill press.

I'm having a similar revelation in TW3. It's amazing what a company can produce if they admit they want to make an action RPG and therefore decide to implement decent combat mechanics.

It's on my list. I mean...a lot of things are on my list, but that's high up. Maybe after Dragon's Dogma and my completionist run of Mass Effect.
2016 must be the year of the replay.

Step 1: buy Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen and select "hard".
Step 2: go as soon as possible in Bitter Black Isle (the DLC area). Or as soon as you think it feels "possible" if you don't like too much "intensity".
Step 3: enjoy one of the best experiences you will ever have in video games (if you like RPGs).
The combat in this game is just awesome. We could say the game has some elements from Dark Souls, Dragon Age, Shadow of the Colossus...
I did not like so much the Main Game, but just the DLC is excellent and worth it (at least from my "souls games fan" perspective).
I would not say it is better or worse than DAI SP (ignoring bugs in DAI). In DAI SP you can use pause and give orders. It is more about "strategy" (at least if you play with all trials in nightmare without using OP focus-skills). And Dragon's Dogma is some kind of "hybrid" instead. Strategy is not "that" important (you give more simplistic orders without "pause"). Reactions, skill, speed when aiming and shooting (there is no auto-aim like in DAI and Dark Souls, and I love it), etc., are more important.
My 2 cents.
P.S.: when fighting 2 or 3 dragons at the same time or many enemies, it reminds me a bit of Mass Effect MP (that "chaos", several bosses in a small map/area, and the fact that you need to hit weak spots: heads, hearts, eyes...).
Edit: just to clarify why the main game is not that good imo. It is open world, but definitely not with the same budget like The Witcher or DAI. So, even with an excellent combat, the exploration feels somehow "dull" at some point, because the maps are monotonous and the enemies' diversity is a little bit poor. Still decent though.

Played this all weekend actually. Few things I really liked, few things I really didn't like. Solid game overall though.
I am curious to learn about the things you did and didn't like. I've been looking at it as well ![]()
edit: Found an online version of it. However, only available in Japan: http://www.dd-on.jp/pc/

Hope i will see similar fighting mechanics in DA. Guys learn from Dragon Dogma - jump on back of Behemoth or giant monster and critical strike them so they will lose their weapon or break down.... etc. LEARN its 2012 game!!!!!!! Also when i strike i want feel that strike (not just cut air), i want that enemy lose part of armor, shield from crit strike or their legs, arm etc..... i want behead enemies!!!!!! Give me option to break Qunari horn! Wound them so they wont use some arial attack etc.....

It's crazy how much the DA:I gameplay designers just straight out plagiarized combat elements off dragon's dogma. I don't know which way it happened but this is just too weird...
I guess you can't reinvent the wheel everytime.

I really enjoyed the combat in this game, but I found myself only playing the main questline missions after about 20 hours. I like not using fast-travel in games, but when I need to run through the same corridor over and over again for what seems like every side quest, with the exact same enemies spawning in the exact same spots over and over again, then the game starts feeling trite. Add to that the fact that your pawn won't ever shut up. "Yes pawn, I know there are Harpies there. They were there the last 20 times I can through here on fetch quests, so just SHUT THE **** UP!!!!!!!!!!!"
The climbing combat mechanic is also pretty entertaining, until you've fought that particular enemy more than a couple times, in which case it just feels overplayed.

The Witcher 3 is my favorite RPG from last year. I still have to play the DLC. I think I'll will do that now. Thanks for reminding me. ![]()

You can disable the pawns' "suggestions" and comments in options. I don't remember which option (the name was not intuitive at all, sadly; maybe something about ¿cinematic?).
There is a fast travel, but not at the beginning. There are some "magic crystals" you can get later in game. One can put them anywhere on the map (not in Dungeons I think), and then use a consumable to travel wherever the crystals are (they don't "expire" if you don't pick them up). It is not the best fast travel system, but at least it is "customizable".
I agree on the rest about monotonous runs, "trash" enemies and side quests. Go here and there to talk does not make a favor to this game. And it is a "gem".
Maybe there are not many people who don't like The Witcher, but I am one of them. I want more RPGs like Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma (Dark Arisen) and DAI/Pillars of Eternity (both of them with improvements in terms of combat animations and some mechanics). Either strategy or fast reactions/skill (or both) should be needed in the gameplay to keep me interested. I did not even finish The Witcher 2 (only the first one). Exploration, beautiful open world, story... ok, nice; but I have to use the same swords all the time, same skills, same combos... the combat is just not good enough for me. I am not saying The Witcher is not skill-dependent... But it is just not enough.
Even "old" games like Darksiders 2 had so many options/combos. Kingdoms of Amalur is another example of nice combat (way too many boring side quests though...).
Edit: There is a "Dragon's Dogma Online". A multiplayer with updates, new bosses... Sadly only in Japan (?).

Honestly, as much as I love Dragon's Dogma, I do play Dragon Age and DD for different reasons. Simply put, for gameplay and loot, I generally grab DD. For story, characters, and roleplaying my PC, I'll play Dragon Age. Really like the strategy you can use with Dragon Age, but DD harkens back to my hack n' slash/dungeon crawling days. So I am more than happy that both games exist!
And HurkyKeen isn't wrong about BBI - LOVE THAT PLACE!

I am loving this game. The combat is so tight. The gear is sweet looking too.
I had tried playing it on the consoles, but couldn't get past the slow load times and low res graphics. Now that it is on the PC, I can properly enjoy the game. The game has me thoroughly hooked. I still have Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 sitting on the backburner, and I find DD far more compelling to play for whatever reason.
I am pretty confused about the deeper mechanics of the game, but Coldie is helping me understand it.
@Coldwetn0se, well my plan to frame the fat bastard for crimes that he may or may not have committed worked too well. The fat man was found guilty. I guess I lose yet another vendor for the game.
Word of advice to those new to the game, If you run an escort mission and the person you are escorting dies, they are DEAD and gone forever so keep that in mind. I found this out the hard way and lost someone who still owed me money and now she will never pay me back.

My god...you guys are taking it back in this thread. Man I loved that game though. I don't much care about story so I didn't mind that. That gameplay was beast in this game. Still a fan. SCREW Capcom for making DDO Japan only.
It has the stupid RNG system for the BBI equipment though. A lame reason to grind does not extend gameplay or make it "fun" IMO. I usually quit before getting fully decked and modded out. That was a fail, but that game is still a really good game.

I don't love The Witcher for the combat. It isn't the best by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly isn't shallow like all the Arkham clones. It's everything else about The Witcher series that I love. The lore, the setting, and most recently in the latest one, the gameplay is much more streamlined to promote using potions and bombs, so you actually feel like a witcher. So much immersion!
The reason I gave Dragon's Dogma a try was because a friend I met while playing Dark Souls said that it reminded him a lot of Dragon's Dogma. I still have no idea why he said that.
