Ten. Two humans, one Asari, one Salarian, one Turian, one Drell, one Batarian, one Krogan, one Quarian, and one Andromedan race.

Any number is fine as long as there's a Vorcha companion.

As others, I'd say between 6 and 9 squad members.

If ME:A follows the same class system as previous Mass Effect titles, 6 is the bare minimum (1 Soldier, 1 Adept, 1 Engineer, 1 Vanguard, 1 Sentinel, 1 Infiltrator). It also seems the minimum in Bioware's games.

Yet, despite the saying "less characters = more depth", it doesn't always work that way. DA2 and ME have smaller casts than the other games in their series, yet I didn't feel that they were more or less developed than in the rest. Variety is good, because players will never agree on who are their favourite characters. I put the maximum at 9 more for gameplay reasons; when the cast is too big, choosing between them for missions can be hard.

Nevertheless, I've always felt that ME has it better than DA in this regard. There, a specialization that doesn't fit the style of game you play can potentially send a character to the bench forever (sorry, Cole), while ME's gameplay isn't so punishing in this regard. Add squad member interaction (not only in party banter, but also in reaction to player choices and mission developments) and loyalty missions, and you can sell a cast as large as ME2's.

7 sounds about right. But they need to be useful in some unique way to encourage you to use them all.

Why should you have to use them all? One of the best ways to make additional playthroughs of BioWare games feel different is to use different combinations of companions for most of the game. Like Wrex+Garrus for one playthrough, Tali+Ashley for another.

ME3 had a perfect size, really. The problem was just how we had to play more than half the campaign to unlock all of them.

When was it said that Andromeda was going to be a one-off?  I'm gonna need some context here.

I think 9 is optimal, but the freedom that came with ME2's dirty dozen was good too.  Although, more companions means less complex individuals, which is why I say 9 is probably best.

It was mentioned in a article I saw but that was probably half a year ago. I would not be surprised if it changed during development or if the game does really well.

So this is a new earth colony would not be too unreasonable to have a all human squad.

Between 7 and 9.

Any more than that I think you start running into problems with some not having much content.

So there's a near consensus of around 7?

Nine could work. That's enough for familiar races we know and love, and some room left over for new races.

At least six, less than ten.

And make them all unique and useful.  In previous games, those who could take down Shields/Barriers/Armor quickly were given priority in my parties over those who could do none of that.  Only on my most recent trilogy run have I really experienced how fun characters like Zaeed, Ashley, and Vega could be...and if I wasn't purposefully trying to do things at a greater challenge, I might have forever missed this.

Seven is a good number to me.

As long as they have all unique and worthwhile power sets, I'm good.

Also interesting personalities/background as well.

9 total is good (not counting temporary like Jenkins/Anderson or DLC-only like Aria/Nyreen).

Halfway point between ME1 and ME2.

As long as there is one blonde Lagertha-esque warmaiden and one Shakespearean Krogan who will quote a poem after a battle, wouldn't mind the rest of the squaddies.

They need to also provide our vorcha with a menacing helmet akin to Predator's.

Four (4) permanent squadmates with between two (2) or three (3) temporary squadmembers is good enough for me.

6 or 7 seems like the right amount. I love the ME2 cast but it really was too big
