Been playing me3 again and think it's frustrating that the squad is both so limited and that availability of them is delayed.
Eight really does seem the minimum I'd want as there's always a few I'm likely to either actively dislike or just feel meh about and hopefully this time everyone can be recruited early.
Don't really want a repeat of me3 where much of the time I'm rotating between a tiny pool of 3 characters for many missions.

Not too many, 7-8 ideally. 9 is a little too many, though it might still be manageable. Anything above that is way too many (ME2 only got away with that because the whole point of the game is recruiting more people).
The reason why I favor less squad members is simply because you can't take all of them with you, and likely not care about all of them equally in one playthrough.
On top of that, ME1 and all Dragon Age games have the issue of gear distribution, which can make more squad members even less desirable.

If ME:A continues with the 3 member squads I think 7 is a good number but if they change to 4 squad members then I'd like 9-10 possible.

I'm going to say 15. Maybe 7 or 8 as the regulars (who could either die or leave). The others as those that may or may not join depending on the scenario, conversations, decisions made or from just exploring. Kind of like Morinth but more thought out.

But I could see how that may bother people as many don't want to lose out on things because of "bad" decisions.

10 would be enough. 5 male + 5 female squadmates, one of them has to be a romanceable renegade blonde.

Wait,
MEA is supposed to be a single title?
I thought it was the start of a new trilogy?????

OT,
I like the way ME2 was laid out, but DAI companions seemed so....bland, vanilla.
So,
I'd say 6-8 BUT, they have to be done well.
It doesn't matter if there's 1 or 30 companions, if they're done poorly.

5-7. 4 romances, 2 or 3 non-romances. 2 romances as non-squad members for a total of six. The non-romances fill the bro, Wiseman and blood knight roles.

DA I:                  9 total (4 human, 4 non-human, 1 human/spirit)

4 humans 3 non-humans, 1 human/spirit and 1non-human/spirit would be better. If Cole is clearly the human/spirit, you don't have to forget the epilogue of the game (I do not have any DLC) where we learn that

Spoiler
.

Anyway, the number of teammember is not the keypoint, their impact on the story is. If you have 13 teammembers  like in MA2 but with juste two words and one side-quest but nothing interesting, it will be useless. But if there are only 6 but all 6 may impact the final ending and your choices will impacts their decision like in DAO where you can have to fight and kills some of your teammembers if you make some decisions, then it is clearly better !

6 tops. One representing each class role to some degree. And more than 6 the characterization starts getting diluted. Heck even at 6 you start to see it.

I think that it's just not the number of companions that count, but also non-combatant crew and how much interaction we can have with them. Also, the number would depend on at which point in the game we can recruit the companions. For example, ME2 had a lot of companions, but since many of them (especially Legion) was recruited late in the game it did not feel as heavily populated to me as it actually was. In comparison, I felt that ME3 had to few companions for a very long time. I think I would like 7-8 companions (thus covering all classes) that can mostly be recruited fairly early in the game, plus 2-3 important non-combatants (like the advisors in DA).

I think I would like to see less human companions this time around (although that is just my preference) and I really would like to see more female alien companions (we've had male turians, krogans, salarians, protheans and drells, but only asari and qurian females). If we have 7 companions I would prefer if only two were human. As for romances, I think 6 would work well with a team of 7 companions and 3 non-combatants - it would be enough for good variety and depth. It could also be interesting if two of the companions were already in a committed relationship.

A small but diverse group of about five to six, maybe, seven people. I'd like for the group to have a few humans in it but that the majority be aliens with the latter possibly including a member of a species native to Andromeda.
