Seriously, I went to Storm Coast to do both the Chargers quest and Sutherland's at the same time... But it is literally impossible because the game forces you first into Iron Bull's quest if you go to Storm Coast while you have it, and then the game forces you out of Storm Coast after you finish and then Sutherland dies since you entered Storm Coast without saving him. Who thought this was a good idea? No other quests really have timed stuff like that. The fact that the game is 11 patches in and no one thought to change it makes me sad or mad, I can't decide which. :(

You can be both mad and sad...I would be if I hadn't accidentally done things right in my first game and then learned not to make a mistake and get Sutherland killed, in my later games. For some reason, I really like having the Sutherland quests turn out good all the way through to the end.

The game only loads Iron Bull's personal quest if you have obtained it from him AND he is in the party, it's simple either don't have his quest or, if you have both, don't take Bull.

It would be simple if the game gave you a warning... What you suggest requires having pre-existing knowledge that the game will do that to you. I would have to have been reading a list of quest issues to have known what the results for taking Iron Bull to Storm Coast would be.

The simple answer is that no one actually played it this way in the play test. It's a pretty specific combination. No one thought about it in advance, and no one play tested it randomly. That's just the reality of QA.

I never ran into this problem. I made two separate trips to the Storm Coast.

The way I prevent a Sutherland problem is that I don't talk to Bull at Skyhold much until after I've done all of Sutherland's quests. That means I don't do Bull's quest until I make sure I've already saved Sutherland. Gotta have priorities!  :)

DarkAmaranth1966 won the thread. Simply don't take Bull to the Storm Coast while Sutherland's mission pops up there. And the quest does tell you that it triggers by taking Iron Bull to the Storm Coast. It says something like, "Go to the Storm Coast with Iron Bull to..." and so on. Simply reload to before Demands of the Qun and go to the Storm Coast without Bull to save Sutherland.

The problem is that try as QA might all combinations or possibilities may not get vetted. The combination you encountered is very specific. The Sutherland quest had to progress to that point. Bull must be recruited and Sutherland talked to in the inn. Inquisitor had to ask Bull about the Ben Hassrath and had a drink with Bull and the Chargers at Skyhold to trigger the Demands of the Qun quest.

The QA testers probably never did this particular combination. I understood from the description that this quest would supersede any other quest in the Storm Coast if Bull was in the party. The end of the quest would take the party back to Skyhold.

A similar thing happens in Dragon Age Awakening. If you do a certain quest, possibly just visit that town whose name I can't recall, before you meet Dagnar, you won't be able to complete or even start her personal quest. It would be nice if they could avoid these quest stopping conquests. Bigger flow-charts?

Sigrun. And yes, if you complete the smuggler/guards quest in Amaranthine before meeting her, then it knocks out her personal quest. But this is a bug and there is an unofficial fix for it. The Sutherland quest is just an example of poor planning, though it is easier to avoid than Sigrun's bug.

If you go to the Skyhold tavern on the second floor your Inquisitor can encounter a lad named Sutherland. Sutherland comes to tell the Inquisition about several bandits in his area. A war table mission will popup that allows the Inquisitor to outfit Sutherland to take care of the bandits or simply take care of the bandits in other ways. If Inquisition outfits Sutherland several more war table mission will popup after talking to Sutherland again. The Inquisitor will notice that Sutherland hires other group members and they become an adventuring company of the Inquisition, it the Inquisitor allows it.

Awakening was the worst for this. Just walking in the wrong direction in the City of Amaranthine could potentially break a quest.

Be aware that you have to pick the correct war table person for Sutherland's quests to make it all the way to the best ending. I think Cullen is always a safe bet but you can pick the other two for at least the armor choice. I've seen his group outfitted in all three armor choices, over my many games.  :)

Yeah, there is no problem there as long as you don't take IB with you. OP, have you tried that?

Yeah, the problem was that I did Iron Bull's quest, decided I would go back for Sutherland later since I had already been kicked out of Storm Coast, and went and finished all of Exalted Plains. Exalted Plains, in my opinion, is the most tedious zone in the game. So I was already 4 hours away from my last non-quick save. Of course I am going back now to save them anyway. :(

Sutherland group is da best after Chargers. Hate that they made the war table missions really hard.
