When the games was launched I remember the only way to beat or at least have an easy time to play nightmare mode is to have a mostly range party with a single tank. DW rogues and 2handed warriors were so squishy that there was no point in bringing any melee classes other than a tank. So has it changed or it's still the same?

Well yeah,
Until later levels and you can get guard for rogues and mages even.. but on low levels all melee but tanks are a no go..

What? This has never been the case.

I had an easier time playing Nightmare with my DW rogue (typical party: 3 DW rogues and a mage) than with my mage (typical party: 1 S+B warrior, 2 mages, and a DW rogue). Currently doing an archer run, and I'm still nostalgic for the dagger rogue.

Enemies only damage the party while they're alive and not crowd controlled. The mage opens with CC, and the dagger rogues will vaporize everything before the CC wears off. Especially if the enemies are vulnerable to freezing, and the dagger rogues are shattering them all over the place.

For bosses, dagger rogues can straight-up solo them. They have plenty of tools for dealing single-target damage, and avoiding single-source damage.

I don't think "never" and "only" apply in either case.

It would be more accurate to say that it is easier to beat the game on NM with a party of mostly ranged attackers. It is by no means the only way.

While all that is indisputably true, most people don't have the interest or ability to min/max a close combat build to glass cannon everything from the Prologue on.

That said, it isn't all that hard to create a party or solo build that can beat NM, using whatever tactic you want. You could go all Warrior if you want, or solo Warrior, and limit yourself to just one skill tree (like Battlemaster), and still beat the game without too much effort, particularly if you have a Golden Nug with all DLCs to draw from.

That actually would be an interesting challenge. Beat the game from Skyhold on without ever using an auto attack, or, by only using one skill tree.

Before learning all the nuances of the game, range is indeed easier IMO.  However, all setups are viable on Nightmare if the player plays to the strengths of the party and masters crafting.

Fair enough.

I suppose the best way of phrasing it is "easier for who?" I find it much easier to go glass. Not just "oh I'm saying 'easier' when I really mean 'more interesting'", but actually easier to survive.

However, others find it easier to bunker down or go to range. So the thread's original question is going to get nonsense garbage answers. OP is looking for "easier for me", but we can't know what's easier for them, only what's easier for us. :)

Range is the easier option for newcomers and people uncomfortable with the higher difficulties. I don't think it's necessarily safer, but the skillcap  is quite low for ranged classes. Point and shoot.

With trials on I would not venture into the hinterlands without a mage with dispel or unless I abused the Golden Nug/Trials Rewards for op gear immediately.

I never understood the fear of nightmare. I used to exclusively play hard mode but now it's nightmare, there's not much a difference.

In fact I don't even know what normal mode is like.

play how you want my friend, the game isn't "that" punishing. :)

Why would you play on nightmare mode for "an easier time"?  Kinda contradicts the entire point of opting for nightmare mode in the first place.  If anything, nightmare is too easy and I'm not an uber gamer by any stretch of the imagination.  My first time through nightmare and the only part I struggled with was the templar haven fight.  Then i realised i shouldn't wind the treb as far as i could, as soon as i could.
