Random yes. still its far too often. Last 4 days I only managed to scan a single planet (using 20 probes, saving after each scan and restarting the game about 6-10 times). I am low on resources and I am getting angry each time I look at research or all those uncharted worlds full of resources I can't get.
can't get out of planet scanning?

This happened to me the first planet I scanned on my very first playthrough. It has happened a few times now, and I make sure to save between planets. I've tried to replicate it but so far it appears to be random.

Just happened to me while scanning Alkonost.. fortunately, I saved recently, but it's still a pain. Any updates on a release date for the patch, which I hope this addresses?
PS some constructive criticism Bioware - this planet scanning business is pretty monotonous. Me - I loved exploring around in the Mako. Otherwise, and in all sincerity, it's a brilliant game.

Playing Devil's Advocate here so please don't flame me.
Have any of you altered keybindings?
What OS, GFX Card, CPU are you using?
Lets give the Folks at Bioware a bit more info upon which to base their testing of the issue. they give a thread with instructions about what info they would like to have stickied on first page. I myself am fortunate not to have encountered this ...... yet.

No sweat Ktauliss,
No new keybindings, W7 Pro x64, Radeon HD 4870 (512Mb), Intel 2.33GHz quad Core 2 (Q8200), 8Gb RAM. All other programs were closed, apart from Kaspersky.
Windows and graphics drivers (10.1) fully updated.
Hard to pin down what caused it - no system changes, and I've already done hours of planet scanning. Then the Esc key became unresponsive, and tried a bunch of different things, but just could not return to the CIC.

Only started happening now after 25+ hours in the game, 4 times the same night and I scanned like crazy before then without it ever happening. Think it was after I bought the probe update.

It seems to work if you scan again then go back. At least for me.

I've had this problem several times; enough that after every planet I survey, I immediately leave the galaxy map and quicksave before resuming. Curiously, I haven't encountered any problems since taking that approach, so unless it's just a fluke, it seems to be related to the amount of time (or planets) scanned.
I'm pleased that overall the game's actually pretty stable (none of the constant "oh, I see it's 45 minutes since you saved, I think I'll crash now" like with Oblivion) but having it lock up so tight I could only kill it with Task Manager when I'd just spent the past hour surveying several planets was... irritating.

lol i got so fed up with planet scanning (3rd playthrough) i trainered my way to 999999 resources.
Seriously, after a few playthroughs you find that this crap is a time waster.

There is an easy way to avoid that situation : dont start the scanner before you have the planet description panel. If you skip that panel, you wont be able to come back to it using the esc key.

No, this just happened to me for the first time (and I'm pretty near the end of the game) and I definitely saw the planet description panel first. Incredibly annoying bug tacked on to an incredibly boring game element.
Don't get me wrong, the rest of the game is fantastic Bioware... but please fix this bug ASAP and nix planet scanning for ME3.

Aiks, at least it works for me. Sometimes the scanner button appears while the game is zooming on the planet, if I click at that moment, I am stuck but since I wait for the planet description, I was never stuck anymore.

I too have gone down this dark and annoying road. Bioware needs to includ a fix in a patch. It wouldn't be so bad if we could find more element zero. But we must scan planets to find enough to advance in our uprades.

This has happened to me a few times, but when my Normandy gets stuck I usually just go back to explore mode then exit then it's alright.
