Sure Bogsnot1 --- I registered my copy.
I first noticed this "stuck mining planet" problem on ME2 after upgrading to advanced scanning. As others say -- the ESC key does not exit. Actually, no keys work (F9 does not auto-load). Only the mouse buttons work, and the cursor is stuck on the sphere of the planet.
MassEffect2.EXE == v1.02
System Summary:
- Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
- Intel® Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
- ATI Radeon HD 4650 [1GB VRAM]
- DirectX 10.0 (Aug2008)

This problem has occurred for me twice after playing for a while and then mining a new planet immediately after mining another planet (without going back to the ship).

Just got a solution for this bug : when ESC doesn't work anymore, you have to make Shift + Esc
Annoying when your "use" key is left shift ...
Weird bug though....

Then maybe you have to try "Use key" + Esc ?
( would be reaaaaaaly weird ... )

Thus far, the ony known cause of it is pressing escape while right mouse button is pressed and you are actively scanning. Try releasing right mouse button, giving it second to settle, and then hit escape.
If that still doesnt work, then I can only guess there is something wring with your installation, or possibly some third party driver or application is interfering with the escape procedure.

This problem occurred for me once again, after ALT-TAB was used to switch to Windows (browsing with Chrome), and then clicking back on the MassEffect2 instance to make it go full-screen again. Upon joining back into the screen, ESC would not get my out of scanning the planet.
I tried various combinations of releasing SHIFT+ALT+CTRL+ESC keys, as sometimes those keys (modifiers) get stuck.
Nothing worked for me. I had to kill the game. Luckily I am used to saving before each scanning. It still wasted 5 minutes of my time, and another 5 minutes to find this thread and give an update.
Unrelated, I just found some very useful tips for PC users:

Not right clicking while pressing ESC seems to help a LOT... at least for me anyways

I'm careful not to hold down more than 1 key at once, except for the required left-click while scanning with the right-mouse-button. Still, there is 1 planet that always gets stuck for me.
After Horizon, I drive straight to Venture in the Iera system, and mine until resources go from 'Rich' down to 'Moderate'. And then the ESC key no longer works.
Of course ME2 staff do not care and will not patch. They are surely working on ME3. I want my money back!!!!!

Then by all means take your complain to EA support and demand they do something about it. After all, they are the ones who perform official tech support, we just do user to user based support here.
If it was a true bug, then everyone, without exception, would suffer from it, and these boards would be fuilled with people complaining about it. The fact that it is a small handful of people seems to indicate its either something they are doing wrong, or some 3rd party software is interfering with with the escape command. Anything from your mouse driver, Windows mouse options, sticky keys, keyloggers or anything else could be at fault here.

I disagree that this is not a "true bug". Software defects are often intermittent. When timing is involved (like for communication between threads/processes) a defect may not be 100% reproducible or easily reproducible in a normal use case. Some operating environments (or hardware platforms) may be able to reproduce the error quicker, and different customers may encounter a "true bug" to varying levels of frequency.
Yeah, I should take the time to report it to EA... I didn't realize it was just a user-help forum. I see your link with instructions on reporting issues.
Maybe you're right that since this issue isn't reported that many times, it may be a result of drivers or 3rd party software interaction. I'll uninstall my custom logitech drivers and switch to a normal mouse, and then try my steps to reproduce the issue.

damn. uninstalling the Logitech SetPoint software solved my problem.
It is still true that upgrading to advanced planet scanning made this problem 2-10x worse than it already was. Or it could be that the solar systems being explored after that upgrade was made were just more ESC-key-error-causing. Whatever it is, I did not have this issue for the first 30 hours of gameplay. So it's likely that ME2 can workaround this issue to prevent this "stuck scanning planet" issue... and I refuse to admit Bogsnot1 was right...

Yeah.. uninstall your logitech crap. Or first, you can try just closing the SetPoint application.

I am having the same problem. I bought the game from Steam if it makes any difference.
I contacted EA support, but all they could suggest is posting on this forum.
I did get a free downloadable content voucher out of it through, so I guess it wasn't all in vain.
Is it likely to worthwhile creating a new thread like this post suggests?

The only known cause of this, so far, is to press escape while you have the right mouse button pushed. Are you 100% sure you are releaseing the RMB before you hit escape?

I have a similar problem. I am not sure what caused it, but no matter whether rmb is pressed or not when I hit escape, will it let me return to the solar system view. I recon it has something to do with either me using the last probe or the planet status going from "Poor" to "Depleted." Either way it's terrible annoying. Also, a bug or a glitch is a issue that interferes with the intended way software works. Since, regardless of your mouse drivers, you're supposed to be able to exit planet scanning mode, this is a bug. Even if it is only present on certain systems. I am using an Ikari lasermouse with plug-n-play, autonomous drivers, nothing 3rd party.

You would be surprised by what 3rd party drivers and applications can do for the games functionality.
Weapons Locker Crash: ASUS GamerOSD and SmartDoctor
Game not Loading: Kapersky AntiVirus 2010/2011
Keybindings not working correctly: Comcast Constant Guard
Game not installing: Nero SmartStart
There does appear to be a problem, but it is with a relatively small amount of people. The problem with PC troubleshooting, is that due to the lack of standards in system builds, the amount of hardware and software configurations available, quite often it requiers drivers to be acertain level, service packs to be a certain level, and some software to be uninstalled, disabled, or extra software to be installed before it will run properly.
Do you have any keylogging software installed, mouse or keyboard accessability options enabled, or keyboard drivers loaded which may be interfering with it?

I have been able to figure out one criteria (which is easily avoidable) that generates the issue EVERY time. When, during planet scanning, I fire my last probe, and the planet thereby goes from poor to depleted, I get stuck. Rarely and inconsistently it seems to depend on the planet status changing, but that's way rarer. I'm not too worried now that I know how to avoid one certain cause.
Also, I agree entirely with your comments on 3rd party drivers and utilities, but in those cases, is the conflict of functionality considered a glitch or just incompatibility not worth investigating?

Its worth investigating up to a certain point, at least to the point where we identify the 3rd party driver or app thats causing the problem.
Also, see what happens is you fire one more probe after the plantary status has changed. Normally there is still one or two more resource "spikes" to be found after a planet has become depleted.

Today, after 4 day the bug doesn't happenned again. But this time I guess it's caused by mouse RMB and Esc buttons pressed together. But I'm sure when happened the first time I'm sure not pressed Esc, just when I completed the scans.

I never hit esc while my rmb is down. I have windows 7 default drivers. After this glitch occurs I reload the game and try scanning that planet again with no trouble at all, but it does require a restart. My guess is that something is happening in the game (on the Normandy) with the ai/animations/audio that the player cannot see because of the scanning interface that is causing this. For example; perhaps my Shepard is starting one of his idle animations at the same time that I hit esc and the engine cannot tell at that exact moment if I want to bring up the menu or exit scanning. That's just a stab in the dark however, as I know almost nothing about these things.
