I don't know about the rest of you but in my opinion the version of the citadel in mass effect is the best version. It's so emersive, vibrant and beautiful and you could literally get to every place you needed to buy walking, or if you were lazy you could take a shuttle taxi. I do have a theory for why the citadels in mass effect 2 and 3 were so limited. It states in mass effect 2 that during the battle of the citadel in mass effect whole sections of the citadel, most notably the lower wards were completely or mostly destroyed, therefore we can assume that the walkways were destroyed as well. My theory is that they used the already installed shuttle taxi system while the keepers were repairing the damaged walkways of the station and were not far enough along or by the time mass effect 3 occurred it became more important to focus on more important projects because of the impending war.

No. It was that in ME2 you were with Cerberus and thus you were in the Wards where things were more... gritty. When you saw Anderson, you could see that the parts of the Presidium you were in during ME1 looked fine. The reason things looked different was that people complained about the elevator rides taking too long. The look of the Citadel was determined by plot.

The elevators did take long, but I loved to hear the news while in the elevators. The Mass Effect citadel was the best, while the ME2 citadel cool but got old after a while, I would rather spend my down time in Omega. The ME3 citadel was okay I just rushed to the areas I needed to get and bought mods from the Normandy. The Citadel DLC really helped me love the Citadel even more.

I also like ME2's Citadel the best. It was a ahsame we barely got to see the presidium but I just loved what they did to the wards.

The Citadel in ME1 was a little too sparsely populated and too sterile IMO (especially since I read Revelation just before playing the game where the wards are described much more like seen in ME2). I get that this was a constraint in technology but still, it doesn't change the fact that it felt too clean and empty.

Apart from the hub areas, I also liked the parts of the station that we see in ME2 during Garrus' and Thane's loyalty missions.

ME3 wasn't bad either but I didn't like that we were constrained to the presidium. Also, all the creepy listening for fetch quests soured the experience for me. But it's great that you cans see the other areas (like the presidium commons from the window of the hospital, etc.). With the Silversun Strip it almost has the ME2 Citadel beat but since it's DLC, it will always feel a little ... attached to me.

You mean you didn't like eavesdropping in on everyone's conversations? Sorry I couldn't help but stop and stand here and listen in on your private conversation you were having with your asari lover, you cheating .....

I have to admit, I did love the girl who sold her car to buy new armor for that salarian dude. She was adorable. :)

ME1 had the best Citadel by far, despite the lag. Also, elevators are better than loading screens!

I differ to you guys in that I like the ME3 Citadel the best.   :P

I really didn't like Zakera Ward in ME2 and felt cheated, it was like a shopping mall and not the Citadel at all.  When I started ME3 and went to the Presidium, heard the old ME1 music start up and walked out into the open area with greenery and cafes....damn that was a great moment.  Took me right back to ME1 and I was so so happy it was all Presidium-y again.

I didn't know your crew ventured out there either, so randomly finding Garrus and Liara just chilling out was very cool, but I also realised that it was weird they never did that before....if only.

As for listening to folks conversations, it's way over used.  A few are good though, especially the one about Joker's sister.  That damn near broke my heart.   -_-

The Citadel in ME1 was large, but largely felt sterile and lifeless. It is my least favorite version for that reason.

ME2 had the smallest version of the Citadel, with hub duty also split between Omega and Illium, but Zakera Ward was more atmospheric and felt more alive than ME1's empty white corridors.

ME3 was my favorite by far, particularly if you include the Silversun Strip from the Citadel DLC. It was larger than ME2 and more atmospheric. Of all three versions it also felt the most like a real city.

My favorite is ME1, but in ME3 the Citadel is very good too.

I think I would like a mix of the two, the open space of ME1 combined with the aesthetics and population of ME3.

I also loved how in mass effect on the citadel if a civilian was standing you couldn't fire your weapon, but if they were sitting, blast away lol

My favorite was 2 for sure. Especially visiting for the first time and Kasumi hacking the news machines to address Shep.

I'll always have a special spot for 1 and those elevator rides, though. They shouldn't have removed those.

For me it felt like three different Citadels.

The first one made you feel tiny.  Fitting, considering the stigma against humans for achieving in months what takes everyone else years.

We're new here, and as much as we loudly say "We're special!" or "We want more authority on galactic events!" or "I should go.", everyone else has been here a lot longer than we have.

I feel like a little kid running around a mansion, except I can shoot my assault rifle into the air, right in front of C-SEC.

Unless it's pointed AT someone, in which case the automatic courtesy function present on every single weapon kicks in.

The second one really had that "dark vigilante" feel.  The lower lighting juxtaposed with the bright neon was very different from the white, shiny feel of the first.

The big difference was how you dealt with Sovereign, i.e. saving the Destiny Ascension and using the Alliance Fleet to lead the charge or otherwise.

In my playthrough, humans became more accepted, due to their heroic actions, so getting discounts through endorsements was fairly easy, and most species were happy enough to see me.

In the other case, the responses are generally more flippant and/or dismissive, understandably too.

You also see a less "ideal" surface, what with the volus falsely accusing the quarian of pickpocketing, the salarian being a jerk to the human wanting a refund, etc.

For better or worse, you see a more human side to the Citadel, it feels far less alien.  Either we're cool now, or we've all but confirmed the rumors.

The third one I believe nearly hit the sweet spot regarding lore, gameplay, and realism.  The only improvements would have been another area or two, and more than one elevator to travel between them.

We know that the Citadel is far too large to completely accommodate for what is basically a hub.  I wasn't offended by the ending taking place on "a part of the Citadel I'VE never been to."  But it still felt smaller, even though in terms or raw surface area, it's actually larger than the Citadel in ME2.

I appreciated how the map would highlight where to complete sidequests like "Pillars of Strength", since the quest journal in ME3 was lacking in terms of usable information.  It saved me a lot of headaches, knowing I could just travel to the Citadel regular, then pull up the map and scroll to see if there was anything I could finish.

That aside, I like the mood in the third Citadel the best.  It has the shiny feel of the first, with the "realism" feel of the second melded together.  Everyone there is working together, teeth-clenched or otherwise, and the overall cleanliness combined with the sight of all the refugees and frightened people just trying to find loved ones illustrates the desire for normalcy amidst the overwhelming Reaper threat.

And of course, the Citadel DLC.

Even though Leviathan doesn't work properly (curse you, Windows 10, you bastards!), and by extension Bryson's Lab... I am pretty sure that Citadel works as intended.

You really see just how MASSIVE the Citadel truly is, and how much of it is just a complete mystery.  It brings you back in the ME1 feel, where you realize that you are not the master here, and not only that but you see that the other races feel similarly, they've just had more time to hide it.

All the history you find tucked away, in all likelihood never meant to be viewed by anyone, what with the discovery of the Citadel in ~500 B.C., an interrogation from the First Contact War, and even the recruitment of the first Spectre.

It was also cool to hear the recording of Admiral Hackett's proposal to the Council for Shepard to become a Spectre, highlighting their service history (Spacer, War Hero for me) and bringing to mind the first conversation you hear in ME1, the part with Udina, Anderson, and Hackett discussing Shepard and whether he's fit for the mission to Eden Prime.

-------------

All in all, I think it's clear to anyone who's read my posts that I love talking about this game series (and Dragon Age), and at length.

For the TL;DR crowd (it grows every day, which is sad):

Each Citadel acts as a visual "snapshot" of the overall setting.  Big and new.  Not so bad/Not so different.  We stand together.

The citadel in Mass Effect 2 felt a bit too small and constrained, but i had a very lively feel to it. Mass Effect 1 gave the best impression of a *huge* city in space, if stretched just a bit too wide and far, and the elevator rides were truly asking for patience. The sterile and uncrowded presidium could well be attributed to the more exclusive nature of the embassies and presidium; wards are more lively and do tie in much better with ME2's Zakera ward.

Now Mass Effect 3's Citadel, what can I say. I think it conveys the feeling of huge space well while being accessible, but the part that takes ME3 citadel completely out of sight of both of it's predecessors is the mood it conveys, from the refugee camp slowly filling up, the very recently orphaned kid waiting for her parents to arrive on the next shuttle, the PTSD asari on Huerta Memorial etc.. those things make it really difficult to give an unbiased answer on purely aesthetics standpoint etc.

Also, it was fun to look up on the Presidium Commons and realize the the elevator really was an elevator and not a teleportation booth.
