I have one more character listed to recruit in my Journal (some guy who is in jail)but like 4 more character slots, if I go get the last guy with the others show up in my Journal or do I have to find them on my own. I do not want to finsh the main storyline without all the characters.

That person is called Jack. After you get her there is a mission and then you can go recruit more people.
