How Does This Work?

When Inquisition was first coming out, I pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition because I've been wanting to follow the series.  I loved Origins, and 2 felt pretty lackluster, but I had a feeling that Bioware would right the ship with this one.  I wasn't entirely wrong, and I played Inquisition for an unreasonable amount of time, beating it with a couple of characters for my obligatory personal choice/good choice/evil choice playthroughs and then dropped it for a bit (I don't know why I guess other games came out).

Anyway, this morning I woke up and just felt like playing Dragon Age so I loaded Inquisition up into the ol' Xbone.  I hadn't kept up with it much, so I was surprised to see three new expansion DLCs.  Of course I wanted to play them, so I started looking into them and saw that they were each $15.  That seemed pretty pricey, so I tried to find a bundle of them that would save me some money since I fully intended on getting all three.

What I saw was the Game of the Year edition, selling for like $60 and has all the DLC included in it, but nothing else that bundles the DLCs only.  That really sucks, considering I spent $70 on the game when it first came out because I've appreciated Bioware's work, for the most part, up to and including this game. But now that I spent that money to support the company right away, I now have to spend an extra $45 on all the DLC just to experience the game in it's entirety.  I'm essentially being punished with an extra $55 charge to get the "full game" for being a pre-order release date buyer rather than just waiting for GOTY.

Why?  When the new Mass Effect drops, should I just wait it out until GOTY?  Seems to make the most financial sense.

I usually wait for GOTY additions to make it more affordable.  If you wait it out and keep checking the GOTY might go on sale.  It's been half price on PC on Origin but I can't vouch for the console versions.

As for the DLCs, and this it just my opinion mind, you can miss JoH and The Descent as they're not hugely important.  I actually find The Descent to be pretty boring tbh and you could just watch the end on Youtube to get the jist of it.

At the very least you must play Trespasser, it's the end of this story and the beginning of the next.  You should play it with your old worlds too.

The only problem with waiting is the inevitable chance of being spoilered, which happened to me big time with DA:I despite my best efforts to not know.  :(

It is a gamble, as DA2 did not have a compiled edition. So based on the Player's priority, it is having access early to play it the first year, or wait and get it at a savings about a year later.

Depends. If the game is success which requires many gamers buy both the main game and the dlc. If the game has trouble with the fanbase like DA2 then there will likely not be a GOTY edition. I have yet to see a GOTY edition for an unsuccessful game whether it be financial, critical acclaim or both. You will not see a GOTY if the main standard game is not financially successful. So you take a gamble if you wait, because if a lot of gamers do the same no GOTY, because probably no dlc.

Just wait for the DLCs to go on sale. They've already been on sale a bunch of times.

If you only look at the money, and ignore the economic benefit of getting the core game a year earlier, sure.

come on, DaI is one of the biggest games i ve played (my playtime is the SUM OF all 3 mass effects) , actually the second biggest (Biggest biggest is witcher3) , 15 euros - dollars for DLC is nothing since you got so much value in the first place in a game that encourages replayblitity multiple times.
this is why i do not mind Bioware Dlcs beeing pricey.

And if that's the case, you should wait for the base game whether or not there's going to be a GOTY. Wait long enough and you can get a game for $5.

Why play the game at all? If we're ignoring any benefit that arises from playing the game, there's no reason to play. Even free, the opportunity costs would dominate the decision.
