It's been about three years since I played any of the Mass Effect series, after, well, you know.  I finally have a chance to replay the series on my Xbox One (well, ME1 for now until ME2/ME3 is added back), and I was wondering if anyone else has any suggestions for falling back in love with the franchise.  I bought the Xbox One specifically in anticipation for Andromeda.

I will be honest, the ME3 endings hit me hard.  I was jaded, disappointed, and frustrated.  Coming back to these forums and seeing the same things being discussed as back then have me reeling again.  Even after the Leviathan DLC and Extended Cut, I desperately was holding onto Indoctrination Theory three years ago.  I never got involved in any of the debates here, as both sides had it out ad nauseam.  I have since relinquished my hope in the theory, so I could move from denial to acceptance in grieving.  It hurt, after 7 ME1, 5 ME2, 3 ME1 playthroughs, plus hours reading the books/comics/twiki/forums, etc.

I am not here to debate IT now, nor do I want this thread to be about the endings (we all know what happens).  Rather, I am looking for input for players who took a long hiatus from this beloved story arc and found a way to relive the magic.  Thoughts, pointers?  For those who have been playing without cessation, what has kept you coming back?

I have been following the "What you did today in the Mass Effect trilogy" and "The Little Things You Just Discovered..." threads to get some ideas for new playthroughs.

For reference, I had three playthroughs:

Male Shep/Vanguard/Renegade (LI: Liara) - Veteran/Hardcore

Male Shep/Adept/Full Paragon (LI: Ashley, Miranda, Ashley) - completionist playthrough on Insanity

FemShep/Soldier/Mixed, Neutral (LI: Kaiden, Jacob/Chambers, Kaiden) - completionist playthrough on Normal (mostly for the dialogue)

Since you have the X1 and only can play ME1 for now, I would say do something different from the last playthrough you did. Use different squadmates for whatever mission. Do the main missions in a different order. Don't recruit a squadmate, Wrex or Garrus. There are many different ways to play the game

If you like being ruthless, try this for ME1. You have been warned. hahaha

Its been about two month since I did a playthrough. Well except the ME1 playthrough that took half a day during that 2 months. I'm currently having fun with Skyrim.

Anyways. The biggest reason why I continue to play the trilogy is that there are many different things that can be done differently in the games. Different dialogue for doing this or that. Having a character die to see what happens in the next game. Playing this class or that class. Using this weapon vs that weapon. Using this power vs that power. Sooo many possiblties.

The trilogy has replay value. That is the number 1 selling point for me.

Both of those threads are great for ideas, especially since they are relatively devoid of negativity.  May I say, welcome back to ME!

Mike basically said everything that still makes me want to play ME again and again. Granted, I went into the games very late and happened to like the ending, but ever since I finished ME3 1 year ago, I've been replaying the Trilogy twice and am currently on my 4th run (I only played one other shortish game during that time :D). I try to give my characters a real personality and have them react accordingly, not simply go for Paragon or Renegade, and also try out many new things (leaving characters behind or kill them, new LI every playthrough etc.).

Currently I want to play all the classes as I fell in love with the combat system and there's a sheer overwhelming amount of powers and their combination you can use to keep it fresh.

For me it's also exciting which squad mates I want to bring along for certain characters, or which powers fit them personality-wise. For example I had this idea for a b*tchy manipulative Vanguard FemShep, so I will use Dominate with her.

I hope you will enjoy your next Trilogy run!

Also, don't forget to post in the What did you do today thread from time to time ;)

I must admit I started ME1 again the other day on my PS3.  Male Shepard.  First Name : German.

Going full on Renegade for this one.  Zero Romance right through the trilogy.  Party Members, If they die.....they die.

I don't think I'll ever stop playing the original trilogy, which is one of the reasons I'll never part with my PS3. So many precious save files, especially the one for ME1 that has Shepard maxed with all gear and omnigel so I can just freely run over everything with the Mako to get through the missions.

I don't know how creative I am, but I always seem to be good at telling you want definitely won't work:

1) Don't make it a carbon copy of ME1's plot.

2) Don't make it as railroaded as ME3. Don't make the player feel like a passive participant with occasional binary choices

3) Don't copy anything from DA:I's hook. Open area exploration is fine, but make it interesting and addicting but don't do so by making barely contextualized side-quests with zero story behind them.

4) Don't make all exploration areas full of things everywhere. Sometimes a long stretch of nothing while enjoying the view is fine

5) Don't segregate the main story missions with the exploration.

Looking back I would like to have time to dive back into the ME series. I loved ME1 and 2 and parts of three.

Maybe when I finish my full Starcraft play through (Starcraft I to Legacy of the Void). Though, by then Half Life 3 will be released.
