I don't know, Geth, Hanar, Volus, Elcor, Vorcha, Asari, Krogan, Rachni ...

They don't sound too similar to me. Sure, between the Batarians, Turians, Quarians and Protheans you have quite a few who end on "ian" but that doesn't bother me at all.

I just figure that for any species where the name (in their own native language) is not pronounceable for humans, the convention is to name them with something with "ian" at the end. :)

Actually, I am already pretty glad that the races are not just named after their home planets (i.e., Krogan from the planet "Krog", Turians from "Tur", etc.) like so many other SciFi franchises do (looking at you, Star Trek).

I already think that having the races name their own planets not after themselves implies a much richer culture for each civilization.

Anyway, I don't mind their naming of things at all.

This. I start to find it unimaginative when you get Romulans from Romulus or Cardassians from Cardassia. Like, what are all the other species of lifeforms on the planet called? Thus far ME hasn't done something like that.

Besides, they're just English names. Germans don't call themseves by a word that even has a "G" in it, for but one of many examples. For all we know the turian name for turian could be some incomprehensible clicking sound that humans are incapable of even vocalizing, because all the ones we interact with speak through a magic "universal translator".

Naming species is tough, mainly because you will probably lack the body part which produce the sound, if they produce sound, which compromises the name.

How would you translate Elcor in pheromones? It's just a human name, given by human scientists to a non-human species.

The Taarsidath-an Halsaam.

From Par Vollen.

A race of minotaur like beings who drink lizard blood and follow the code.

First, Prothean, Krogan etc. are probably not the name they use in their own language.

Second, I'd much rather use the X-ian formula than have the names be some unpronouncable gibberish full of commas and whatnot.

It's just a name, to be used for ease of reference.

It's not like Bioware cannot come up with more alien sounding names or character models either...such decisions are about making their world accessible to the average person (gamer).  While a few people are into it enough to endure overly complex names and species, most people just find it tiring or are unable to relate to the unfamiliar.

Imagine a species that has two tongues, a very complex vocal apparatus that allows them to speak in several voices at the same time and they use that in conjunction with pigment changes of their skin, pheromones and blinking lights in their antennae to communicate. To human ears their name sounds like a bunch of snakes hissing something like "Shrrsfhhnk" because we don't understand the rest or how they weave their choir of voices together into one message.

Of course, getting the pronounciation wrong is a deadly insult.

So maybe it's not a bad idea to use a name for them in our language which is then magically translated into theirs. Even if we have to call them Snakians and yes, I know how lame that sounds. ^^

Yeah because while Garrus may seem like he is speaking standard english, in reality Garrus is saying something quite a bit different, the whole mouth/mandible thing is different enough from our so that whatever language turians would have developed would make no sense to us. Hanar are probably the prime example of aliens that cannot communicate with the other species unless they use special devices.

Could be worse - the 'X' universe used noble elements:

Argon

Boron

Xenon

Oki ... then Teladi, Paranid, Split and Kha'ak but let's not get picky :)

Names they have seem fine to me.  This is just another excuse to cry about something.

Would you prefer to give them latin names instead? Like "facies reptilis for" Turians or "femina cealus azurum" for Asari?

Stop nitpicking, this is literally a non issue.

We are really running out of things to talk about around these parts, aren't we?

Never trust a Blorker.

The worst are those New Blorkers. Can't stand'em.

Useless fact: Star Control 2 had around 25 different major alien races, and strangely enough, not one of their names used the -ian suffix. My favorite names from the game: Mmrnmhrm, Arilou Lalee'lay, and VUX (short for "Very Ugly Xenoform").

Batarian, Salarian, Turian, Quarian, Prothean, Leviathan, Geth/Khet.

All these names sound far too similar to each other. Whatever happened to creating awesome original names for alien races?

Must've been an Armenian on the BSN staff that came up with all those species' names and Garrus' surname ending with "ian".
