Not necessarily true. For example if the person on the ship is connected to our comms, like giving us intel from the ship while we're on the ground, then they can comment and react just as much. EDI did this quite a few times in ME2 and ME3.

No, they can't comment and react just as much. During a cut scene where something big happens, you can't always have this faceless voice of a person who isn't there constantly speak, but the companion that's there always can, but more importantly, can always be visibly expressive.

Yes you can. The Halo franchise did exactly that for multiple games with Cortana for example.

Maybe we never reach over the rank of private and the only romance option will be the drill sergeant?

Every romance response will result in answers like "Down and give me fifty, maggot!" "Shuddup and run ten laps around the whole compound! If you can't make it in an hour you get latrine duty."

"What's that maggot? Romance? Crawl around in the dirt for a while and I might not consider it." etc

FWIW I was picturing something more along the lines of sexy music and good alcohol but whatever works for you mate.

So, what are the companions in Halo like?

we're never in charge of everyone. TIM would've made a fantastic romance option and someone in a position like Anderson's would work.

Seems tedious to romance outside the ship. Long distance never works anyways

Great. I like them more than the majority of Bioware's companions.

As another example, as I mentioned before just look at EDI. There were missions where she talked and reacted much more than the companions on the ground did, like when exploring the "damaged" Collector Ship.

That reminds me: I hope we can marry our LIs in Mass Effect: Andromeda. We haven't been able to in any of the Mass Effect games yet.

Pfft so you want to one night stand some girl and break her heart? Sounds like you're into the humiliation as well.

This is a big part of the reason why I don't really go for any character that generally has to remain at the home base.

I guess you ignore the crewmembers

That they get to banter and comment everywhere and fight alongside the PC automatically makes them more appealing.

Having dialogue is all fine and dandy, but if they can't speak up or provide cover fire for the leader, than what's the point in having them as a squadmate? Being a squadmate is about completing the mission while helping your fellow teammates, if needed, and not just talking.

So you're admitting that you're humorless, boring, emotionless, unintelligent, reliant on others, and physically unattractive?

there you go assuming again. who says I'm straight?

just to verify you are aware that this is a fictional scenario we're discussing right? this is not like a real relationship i want to have.

and no, i do not want break a girl's heart. i want to play a fictional character who spends a night of passion with a different fictional character (either woman or man) who happens to be an independent adult with their own opinions about how the relationship should proceed. it might continue long distance or it might end there, who knows? i know i don't care all that much. i just want to play a seductive character.

I ignore nothing. I typically go through every possible dialogue sequence with every NPC in the central group of the game. In my opinion, it wasn't until Inquisition that characters not in the PC's combat party started to actually feel more involved.

I admit to not really being sure what's being said here. Why wouldn't they be able to speak up or provide cover fire? That doesn't really address how companions that can participate in most if not all quests will typically have a greater presence than those that can't.

Why don't you ask the ME3 squadmates that question? They failed to provide cover fire twice and once didn't speak up for Shepard

... I thought Kaidan eventually outranks Shepard in ME3.

I didn't mind if the options was there but I would have like it more if there were more people who would view the relationship with disapproval. Joker in particular was very vocal about FemShep's relationship to Kaidan. I would have like it if other crew member would feel like you're giving someone else special treatment and question your judgement often.

Well, he does, and he doesn't. Shepard's Spectre status puts her in a higher tier in the galactic community than Kaidan's position in the Alliance does. Besides, Shepard is charged with command of the ship, so what she says goes anyhow.
